So for the 250<sup>th<\/sup><br \/>\nof that momentous military moment, I\u2019ll AmericanStudy a handful of iconic<br \/>\nRevolutionary War figures, leading up to a special weekend post on that<br \/>\nhistoric anniversary!]<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Three<br \/>\ntelling details about the Continental Army\u2019s longstanding, largely African<br \/>\nAmerican <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amrevmuseum.org\/read-the-revolution\/from-slaves-to-soldiers\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">1<sup>st<\/sup><br \/>\nRhode Island Regiment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: 142.5pt; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">1)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Fraught Origins: If the existence of a 1770s<br \/>\narmy regiment dominated numerically by African American soldiers is no doubt<br \/>\nsurprising, one of the main origin points for this unit will likely be less so:<br \/>\nthroughout the first few years of the war, a number of slaveowners chose to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.battlefields.org\/learn\/articles\/10-facts-black-patriots-american-revolution\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">send their<br \/>\nslaves to fight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"> rather than join the Continental Army themselves (with the<br \/>\nslaveowners still receiving a good bit of the soldiers\u2019 pay, natch). When the<br \/>\nArmy, desperate for more troops, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.battlefields.org\/learn\/articles\/george-washingtons-integrated-army\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">changed<br \/>\nthe rules in February 1778<\/span><\/a><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"> to allow Black soldiers to volunteer their<br \/>\nown service, Rhode Island (still a slave state, as they all were in 1778) took<br \/>\nthings one step further: the state\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanrevolutioninstitute.org\/african-american-soldier\/#:~:text=Needing%20additional%20recruits%20for%20the,his%20passing%20muster%20before%20Col.\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">General<br \/>\nAssembly voted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"> to allow the enlistment of \u201cevery able-bodied negro, mulatto, or<br \/>\nIndian man slave,\u201d promising that every one who so enlisted would \u201cbe<br \/>\nimmediately discharged from the service of his master or mistress, and be<br \/>\nabsolutely free.\u201d The worst and best of America, right there in one moment and<br \/>\nmilitary unit.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: 142.5pt; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">2)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Two Brave Battles: Not too long after that<br \/>\nshift, the 1<sup>st<\/sup> Rhode Island saw its first significant combat, in the<br \/>\nAugust 1778 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.battlefields.org\/learn\/revolutionary-war\/battles\/rhode-island\">Battle<br \/>\nof Rhode Island<\/a> (mostly fought near the island city of Newport). The 1<sup>st<\/sup><br \/>\nwere tasked with defending an important position that was under sustained<br \/>\nassault by the British, and specifically by very dangerous Hessian mercenaries;<br \/>\nthe <a href=\"https:\/\/battleofrhodeisland.org\/highlights-of-the-timeline-of-the-1st-rhode-island-regiment\/\">1<sup>st<\/sup><br \/>\nfought off<\/a> three distinct attacks, helping win a pitched battle that the <a href=\"https:\/\/battleofrhodeisland.org\/lafayette-in-rhode-island\/\">Marquis de<br \/>\nLafayette would call<\/a> \u201cthe best fought action of the war.\u201d It was the first<br \/>\nof many battles the 1<sup>st<\/sup> would take part in, but here I\u2019ll highlight one<br \/>\nmore, a far more tragic and equally inspiring conflict: the May 1781 <a href=\"https:\/\/allthingsliberty.com\/2024\/02\/the-first-rhode-island-regiment-and-the-pines-bridge-monument\/\">Battle<br \/>\nof Pine\u2019s Bridge<\/a> (New York), when a small band of the 1<sup>st<\/sup> were<br \/>\nambushed by a far larger contingent of British troops. The regiment\u2019s Colonel<br \/>\nGreene and eight Black soldiers were killed, and <a href=\"https:\/\/warrensculpture.com\/project\/battle-of-pines-bridge-monument\/#:~:text=The%20Pines%20Bridge%20Monument%20commemorates,line%20along%20the%20Croton%20River.\">it<br \/>\nwas reported<\/a> that the soldiers \u201cdefended their beloved Col. Greene so well<br \/>\nthat it was only over their dead bodies that the enemy reached and murdered him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: 142.5pt; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">3)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">A Culminating Presence: The 1<sup>st<\/sup><br \/>\nRhode Island was one of the only Continental Army units to serve until the end<br \/>\nof the Revolution, only disbanding when the entire army was disbanded in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amrevmuseum.org\/virtualexhibits\/among-his-troops\/timeline#:~:text=November%203%2C%201783,Continental%20Army%20to%20be%20disbanded.\">November<br \/>\n1783<\/a>. That meant for example that the regiment was part of the Revolution\u2019s<br \/>\nfinal significant battle, playing an important role in the October 1781 <a href=\"https:\/\/battleofrhodeisland.org\/timeline-of-the-1st-rhode-island-regiment-landing-page\/\">Siege<br \/>\nof Yorktown<\/a>. And while there was not much major combat over the two years<br \/>\nafter that point, the regiment continued to serve an important role, guarding<br \/>\nthe city of Newburgh, New York from potential British invasion and even taking<br \/>\npart in a planned but ultimately aborted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oswegocounty.com\/news_detail_T17_R2939.php#:~:text=Colonel%20Marinus%20Willet's%20failed%20campaign,alongside%20troops%20of%20Willet's%20Levies.\">expedition<br \/>\nto capture<\/a> the British Fort Ontario in Oswego. From its origins to its<br \/>\nmultiple endpoints, you can\u2019t tell the story of the Continental Army nor of the<br \/>\nAmerican Revolution without a prominent place for the 1<sup>st<\/sup> Rhode<br \/>\nIsland Regiment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Next<br \/>\nRevolutionary figure tomorrow,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Ben<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 12.0pt; tab-stops: 142.5pt;\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">PS.
