All I could see was a parade of visualized data. Then I took another look.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">I used to tell people to search for \u201cdata stories.\u201d Look at the sentence, I said. \u201cVisualization\u201d would be found within a few words of \u201cstory.\u201d The two are compatible but not exclusive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">But I had given up too soon. Right under my nose, old friends such as <a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/redirect\/1e35b1d1-a7ab-4e65-9bab-1b6ee01fbaa8?j=eyJ1IjoiNzhjZnYifQ.INcvj_1Ze0SJ6vOFZ56fmuUV-c3WgtdwwA0LeR1yXJU\" target=\"_blank\">Andy Cotgreave<\/a> of Tableau and <a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/redirect\/daa93291-28fa-4d72-b02e-d8d816266ff9?j=eyJ1IjoiNzhjZnYifQ.INcvj_1Ze0SJ6vOFZ56fmuUV-c3WgtdwwA0LeR1yXJU\" target=\"_blank\">Zach Gemignani<\/a> of Juice Analytics had found a new frontier. I had given up too soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">There were others, too. The great <a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/redirect\/fcc50534-a9c9-4907-852b-6c32f9db47d8?j=eyJ1IjoiNzhjZnYifQ.INcvj_1Ze0SJ6vOFZ56fmuUV-c3WgtdwwA0LeR1yXJU\" target=\"_blank\">Brent Dykes<\/a>, for one, with his \u201cinsight funnel.\u201d The curious and aspiring <a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/redirect\/01509ca3-5b2d-43a4-8f10-406a856d6261?j=eyJ1IjoiNzhjZnYifQ.INcvj_1Ze0SJ6vOFZ56fmuUV-c3WgtdwwA0LeR1yXJU\" target=\"_blank\">Paulina Davila<\/a>, of JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co, and her eagerness to apply techniques of journalism. Also, the traditionalist <a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/redirect\/5796e54e-470e-4d4b-ae7d-9844e5ceda2a?j=eyJ1IjoiNzhjZnYifQ.INcvj_1Ze0SJ6vOFZ56fmuUV-c3WgtdwwA0LeR1yXJU\" target=\"_blank\">Kim Herrington<\/a>, senior analyst at Forrester, and <a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/redirect\/72132500-96a5-4036-8a00-5864634fe094?j=eyJ1IjoiNzhjZnYifQ.INcvj_1Ze0SJ6vOFZ56fmuUV-c3WgtdwwA0LeR1yXJU\" target=\"_blank\">Mico Yuk<\/a> of BIBrains. And my old friend <a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/redirect\/123bc994-eb2e-4022-b44a-57dfee38a491?j=eyJ1IjoiNzhjZnYifQ.INcvj_1Ze0SJ6vOFZ56fmuUV-c3WgtdwwA0LeR1yXJU\" target=\"_blank\">Lee Feinberg<\/a>, a professor at the University of Chicago and president of DecisionViz. He says he would rather not say \u201cdata\u201d at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">It was Andy Cotgreave, director of visualization at Tableau, there since 2011, who went down to the roots: the data. It all comes down to the data \u2014 what data you store, how you store it, how you curate it. Even subtle differences can change the story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cThere is no single version of the truth,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s bullshit. That\u2019s a selling tool.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">With any luck, a story is repeated. People who\u2019ve heard the story at a meeting now retell it in an informal setting. They may dissect the data and ponder the meaning. It\u2019s what I\u2019ve called \u201cthe Starbucks story,\u201d an informal version that\u2019s socialized and remembered.
