Battambang: Bamboo Trains and Beautiful Scenery<\/h3>\n

Another popular tourist spot is\u00a0Battambang<\/a>, a laid-back city with wide, tree-lined streets and a scenic riverside promenade that are ideal for biking, and which you can easily explore on your own.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But again, the real adventure lies in the\u00a0surrounding co<\/a>u<\/a>ntryside<\/a>. Pedal out to\u00a0Phnom Sampeau<\/strong>, a hill topped with a Buddhist temple that offers stunning views over the surrounding plains.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll probably see a few monkeys, which always make for great photos. Just be aware, they\u2019re used to tourists and have a fondness for shiny objects, including water bottles.<\/p>\n

Some people go to Battambang specifically to\u00a0ride on the bamboo trains<\/a>. These makeshift platforms on wheels hurtle along old railway tracks at exhilarating (alarming?) speeds.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kampot and Kep: Pepper Plantations and Seaside Downtime<\/h3>\n

Head south to Kampot<\/strong> and Kep <\/strong>at the end of the trip, when you\u2019re ready to slow your pace and relax a little.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The region is home to\u00a0Kampot peppercorn plantations<\/a>. This mildly spicy peppercorn that\u2019s unique to Cambodia nearly became extinct during the Khmer Rouge regime, but has made a surprising comeback.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cycling is a great way to explore the plantations. You can bike ride through the planting fields where the air is pungent with the smell of red, black and white peppercorns.\u00a0The scenery is impressive and your photos will be amazing.<\/p>\n

When you\u2019re really done with cycling and ready for some R&R, head to nearby\u00a0Kep<\/strong>, which sits on the Gulf of Thailand,\u00a0and\u00a0hop a boat to\u00a0Rabbit Island<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019re there find a shady spot and lay out on the white sand. If you have the energy, swim, or try snorkeling in the clear water. It\u2019s a complete getaway from the hustle and bustle you\u2019ve encountered everywhere else.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Explore the market and do a little scouting. When you\u2019re ready, buy crabs or whatever other seafood tempts you \u2013 shrimp, squid, all kinds of fish \u2013fresh from the water. And ask the vendor to point you to a nearby restaurant where they will cook it up to order. And ideally serve it with a sunset view.<\/p>\n

Locals love to douse the crabs with those kampot peppercorns, giving them a completely local twist. \u00a0<\/p>\n

You can see the Kampot plantations, the bamboo train and the crab market all in one day\u00a0via an organized tour<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0But it\u2019s a packed day and probably not relaxing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If you have the time, slow down to see each area on its own, especially with kids. You\u2019ll have time to hop on a bicycle one more time. And relax on a sandy beach as well.\u00a0What better way to end your family\u2019s Cambodia adventure?<\/p>\n

Here are a few practical tips for your Cambodian bicycling adventures:<\/p>\n

Know the parts of your bike<\/h3>\n

Learn basic bike maintenance. Your tour guides should know how to adjust seats and breaks and fix a flat. But knowing these things for yourself can\u2019t hurt.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And this way you\u2019ll be more confident heading out on your own if the mood and opportunity strike.<\/p>\n

What kind of bikes:\u00a0<\/h3>\n

\u2022 Teens\u00a0<\/strong>can handle the riding, maybe better than you can. But give them a quick lesson on road rules, road safety and defensive riding if they aren\u2019t used to cycling on roads.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2022 For kids under 5<\/strong>\u00a0plan to use a\u00a0bicycle seat or trailer<\/strong>. Ask in advance about these extras<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Until kids are tall enough to ride a <\/strong>full-sized <\/strong>bike,\u00a0I would try to rent\u00a0tandems<\/strong> or leave a lot of flexibility as to how far to cycle in a day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The smaller wheels on kids\u2019 bikes mean they have to pedal twice as much as you do to go the same distance.\u00a0\u00a0And kids poop out way before adults do in the heat.\u00a0 Tandems allow them to stop pedaling when they need a break, which will help everyone enjoy the ride more.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Things to Pack:<\/h3>\n

Headlamps and clip-on lights.\u00a0<\/strong>For early morning starts and late returns. <\/p>\n

A headlamp will help you avoid obstacles like potholes and tree roots. Safety lights that hook onto the back of your clothes will allow traffic to see you in the dark.<\/p>\n

Helmets. F<\/strong>ind out in advance if the tour companies you\u2019re working with provides adult and child helmets. If not, you\u2019ll rest easier if you pack your own.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0Padded bike shorts<\/strong>. Your backside will thank you after your longer rides.<\/p>\n

Tip<\/strong>: Buy shorts that are on the longer side. They\u2019ll protect your thighs from sunburn. And in Cambodia\u2019s conservative culture they\u2019ll attract less attention than skimpy shorts will.<\/p>\n

Water Bottles.\u00a0<\/strong>The Cambodian sun is no joke. Drink more water than you think you need. You\u2019ll be drinking bottled water but being able to pour a few\u00a0\u00a0bottles into one larger water bottle per person will be easier than carrying lots of throw-away bottles.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sun Glasses.\u00a0<\/strong>Not just for the sun. They will be your windshields and protect your eyes from dust, wind and debris.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Should you worry about landmines?<\/h2>\n

Probably not. And maybe.<\/p>\n

Cambodia\u2019s bucolic countryside is the hiding place for\u00a0too many unexploded landmines<\/a>, an unhappy souvenir of the Khmer Rouge\u2019s regime and regional skirmishes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Several international organizations have been doggedly working for a few decades to map minefields and remove the explosives, but it will take some time yet.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0countryside around popular tourist destinations has been cleared<\/strong>. And the biggest clusters are near the border with Thailand, far from the places mentioned in this article.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But not all minefields have been mapped. If you want to pedal into the countryside and get off the beaten track,\u00a0going with a local guide<\/strong>\u00a0is your safest bet.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If you go cycling on your own<\/strong> in the back country, stick to well-trodden paths. Look for and respect any posted signs about landmines and listen to the locals when they tell you of any places to avoid.<\/p>\n

With that warning out of the way, hope you\u2019ll reach for bicycles and explore Cambodia on two wheels when you visit. Your reward will be unfiltered access to scenic rice paddies, local village life, the smells of family dinners cooking and lots of curious children.\u00a0<\/p>\n
