Our host this month is Phil Cook, a New Zealander in the beer trade who lives in Australia. He posed his question for this month\u2019s consideration over <a href=\"https:\/\/philcook.net\/beerdiary\/2025\/05\/06\/the-session-147-invite\/\">at his blog<\/a> and it\u2019s all about art:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Feel free to interpret \u201cart\u201d and \u201cfiction\u201d as broadly as you like.\u00a0Film, TV, music, games, poetry, prose, painting, a particularly pointed piece of graffiti; whatever. Don\u2019t feel obliged to pick a single favourite. A random grab-bag of examples would be wonderful \u2014 though a carefully-selected set that illustrates a trend or theme is of course welcome, too. I\u2019d even be curious to hear about a beer or pub that came to you in a dream, if it felt like it captured something about its subliminal force in culture or on your own specific consciousness.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Phil was good enough in his announcement of the topic to remind me that he was struck by Gord Downie\u2019s rendition of the poem \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vPKeczB3wrg&amp;ab_channel=CyndiScherzer\">At the Quinte Hotel<\/a>\u201d by Al Purdy, something I shared years ago. Here\u2019s Al Purdy\u2019s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dwSgPrG7gNs&amp;ab_channel=BarryTowne\">rendition<\/a>.\u00a0 Around that time, I also received what was unquestionably the highest award a Canadian beer blog writer can receive for their sensitivity as my original post about Purdy\u2019s poem received this comment from none other than the host of CBC TV\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Man_Alive_(Canadian_TV_program)\">Man Alive<\/a><\/em> Roy Bonisteel back in <a href=\"https:\/\/abetterbeerblog427.com\/2007\/05\/05\/from-a-good-beer-blogs-fan-mailbag\/\">2007<\/a>, offering a bit of background on the poet and the poet:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>I like the beer blog\u2026.it\u2019s very good. In interesting fact that a lot of people don\u2019t know is that although\u00a0<\/em><em>Bellevillians are very proud of Al Purdy\u2019s poem about the Quinte Hotel\u2026it is not the Belleville Quinte. It is the Trenton Quinte\u2026now called something else\u2026where Purdy drank. At this same time I had a room at the Quinte when I was driving cab and working at the Courier. At that time we didn\u2019t know each other\u2026but year\u2019s later over many a beer, talked about the fact that we had both been there at the same time. Tell your friend I\u2019ll keep up with his blog.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We now understand that the Quinte of Trenton became known as <a href=\"https:\/\/atthemanse.wordpress.com\/2013\/01\/03\/no-more-drinking-at-the-quinte-hotel\/\">The Sherwood Forest Inn<\/a>, a peeler bar, before it burned in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qnetnews.ca\/?p=23805\">2012<\/a>. Such is the way of the world. There are somethings even poetry can\u2019t save us from.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/abetterbeerblog427.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AtAnInn.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-41794\" src=\"http:\/\/abetterbeerblog427.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AtAnInn-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"\/><\/a>And as further proof (if it was needed\u2026 or even possible) of my status as a sensitive man, I posted a number of passages from poems about beer <a href=\"https:\/\/abetterbeerblog427.com\/2007\/04\/09\/another-day-another-opportunity-to-write-a-beer-poem\/\">back in 2007<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0It included this passage from a poem I have admired since I was in undergrad,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120811054856\/http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Shenstone\">William Shenstone<\/a>\u2018s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=kBkAAAAAYAAJ&amp;lpg=PA255&amp;ots=RmPeZ9uchA&amp;dq=Here%2C%20waiter!%20take%20my%20sordid%20ore%2C&amp;pg=PA254#v=onepage&amp;q=Here,%20waiter!%20take%20my%20sordid%20ore,&amp;f=false\">Written At An Inn<\/a>\u201d from 1758:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Here, waiter! take my sordid ore,<\/em><br \/><em>Which lackeys else might hope to win;<\/em><br \/><em>It buys what courts have not in store,<\/em><br \/><em>It buys me Freedom, at an inn.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Freedom. Wonderful thought right there. Click on that image to see the whole thing as it appeared on page of Volume 27 of <em>The London Magazine, Or, Gentleman\u2019s Monthly Intelligencer<\/em> at <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=kBkAAAAAYAAJ&amp;lpg=PA255&amp;ots=RmPeZ9uchA&amp;dq=Here%2C%20waiter!%20take%20my%20sordid%20ore%2C&amp;pg=PA254#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=true\">page 255<\/a>. And you know it wasn\u2019t just poems being read about drinking in inns back then. There were poems written that were meant to be sung in the taverns and inns of the eighteenth century.\u00a0 I\u2019ve posted a few over the years but I think my favourite, set to a very familiar tune, was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/abetterbeerblog427.com\/2017\/09\/26\/no-liquor-on-earth-is-like-nottingham-ale\/\">Nottingham Ale<\/a>\u201d because, as explained in the 2017 post under that link, I was familiar with the tune. But that was not the only one. In the very next year, I wrote about \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/abetterbeerblog427.com\/2018\/10\/21\/sing-along-with-dorchester-beer-circa-1784\/\">Dorchester Beer<\/a>\u201d which includes this rueful geo-political verse offering an alt-history of the lead up to the American Revolution:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>E\u2019en our brethren across the Atlantick, could\u00a0 they<br \/>But drink of this liquor, would soon be content:<br \/>And quicker by half, I will venture to say,<br \/>Our parliament might have fulfilled their intent.<br \/>If, instead of commissioners, tedious and dear.<br \/>They had sent out a cargo of Dorchester-beer.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I wonder if they\u2019d be open to that trade these days. Hmm. And I would be failing in my sensitivity on this point if I didn\u2019t finish with an acknowledgement to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beerhaikudaily.com\/\"><em>Beer Daily Haiku<\/em><\/a> which ran from 2005 to 2013 during the Golden Age of Beer Writing. That was a great thing to read over the first coffee each morning. The Wordle of its day.<\/p>\n<p>What happened to it all? Why has beer ceased to inspire the pen? Is it because we have traded haze where once was clarity? I don\u2019t know. Have we lost our capacity for sensitivity? I wonder. One last bit of verse before you go about your weekend, this from Keats\u2019s\u00a0<i>Ode to Autumn<\/i> which I wrote about in <a href=\"https:\/\/abetterbeerblog427.com\/2003\/09\/08\/po-tree\/\">2003<\/a> again thinking back to undergrad days when I was struck by this poet\u2019s thoughts on the plenty of harvest and, in the end, harvest\u2019s rewards:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?<br \/>Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find<br \/>Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,<br \/>Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;<br \/>Or on a half-reap\u2019d furrow sound asleep,<br \/>Drows\u2019d with the fume of poppies, while thy hook<br \/>Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers:<br \/>And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep<br \/>Steady thy laden head across a brook;<br \/>Or by a cyder-press, with patient look,<br \/>Thou watchest the last oozings hours by hours.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Good work, Johnny K. Now I am off. Gotta go plant something.
