It lets doctors take a close look at the heart to identify problems and to perform other tests or procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Your healthcare provider\u00a0may recommend cardiac catheterization\u00a0to find out the cause of symptoms such as chest pain or irregular heartbeat.\u00a0Before the procedure, you may need to diagnostic tests, such as blood tests, heart imaging tests, or a stress test, to determine how well your heart is working and to help guide the procedure.<\/p>\n<p>During cardiac catheterization, a long, thin, flexible tube called a catheter is put into a blood vessel in your arm, groin or upper thigh, or neck. The catheter is then threaded through the blood vessels to your heart. It may be used to examine your heart valves or take samples of blood or heart muscle. Your doctor may also use ultrasound, a\u00a0test that uses sound waves to create an image,\u00a0or they may inject a dye into your coronary arteries to see whether your arteries are narrowed or blocked. Cardiac catheterization may also be used instead of some heart surgeries to repair heart defects and replace heart valves.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEi0Wr-rlV3I9eenQKCEr0eYdJ9Lk16TMjZ23GAQkb9mVviEC3uAbVvKTd4eQgdv4aupQkJT7poi9pJRVQU6f_8pOAXBJUG1FPXKbBMDbTHcbDsKY86XZC3DNOWZd07xR1JFuk_yhmqaozf7_qFLjp--2BapkQlW8gy1clxjEeMsrApGPYWBDMW8csSrQMoe\/s1054\/cropped-SGN_08_29_2021_1630252685217-1.jpeg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"691\" data-original-width=\"1054\" height=\"210\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEi0Wr-rlV3I9eenQKCEr0eYdJ9Lk16TMjZ23GAQkb9mVviEC3uAbVvKTd4eQgdv4aupQkJT7poi9pJRVQU6f_8pOAXBJUG1FPXKbBMDbTHcbDsKY86XZC3DNOWZd07xR1JFuk_yhmqaozf7_qFLjp--2BapkQlW8gy1clxjEeMsrApGPYWBDMW8csSrQMoe\/s320\/cropped-SGN_08_29_2021_1630252685217-1.jpeg\" width=\"320\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Who Needs It<\/h2>\n<p>Your healthcare provider may recommend cardiac catheterization to find out what is causing symptoms of a heart problem or to treat or repair a heart problem.<\/p>\n<p>Cardiac catheterization can be used for different purposes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Give a better understanding of other test results<\/strong>, such as\u00a0echocardiography (echo),\u00a0cardiac MRI, and\u00a0cardiac CT scan.\u00a0This is especially helpful if the results from those tests could not identify the problem or differ from what your doctor finds when examining you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diagnose heart conditions<\/strong>\u00a0such as\u00a0arrhythmia,\u00a0heart attack,\u00a0pulmonary hypertension,\u00a0cardiomyopathy,\u00a0coronary heart disease, and\u00a0heart valve diseases, including aortic\u00a0stenosis\u00a0and\u00a0mitral regurgitation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Evaluate you before a possible\u00a0heart surgery<\/strong>, such as a\u00a0heart transplant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Measure oxygen levels and blood pressure<\/strong>\u00a0in the chambers of your heart and the\u00a0pulmonary\u00a0arteries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your doctor may do other procedures to diagnose or treat your condition during cardiac catheterization.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Collect biopsies<\/strong>\u00a0of small samples of heart tissue for more laboratory testing. Biopsies can be used for\u00a0genetic\u00a0testing, to check for myocarditis (a type of heart inflammation), or to look for transplant rejection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use\u00a0coronary angiography<\/strong>\u00a0to look at the heart or blood vessels by injecting dye through the catheter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Perform minor heart surgery\u00a0<\/strong>to treat\u00a0congenital heart defects\u00a0and replace or widen narrowed heart valves.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use\u00a0percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)<\/strong>\u00a0to open narrowed or blocked areas of the coronary arteries. PCI may include balloon dilation, also known as\u00a0angioplasty, or\u00a0stent\u00a0placement.
