The men were members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taosartmuseum.org\/taos-society-of-artists.html\">Taos Society of Artists<\/a>, a group of visual artists based in Taos, New Mexico, between 1915 and 1927.<\/p>\n<p>The paintings had <a href=\"https:\/\/news.unm.edu\/news\/fbi-returns-stolen-paintings-to-unms-harwood-museum-of-art-and-taos-community-40-years-after-art-heist-6910699\">been missing<\/a> from the museum\u2019s walls since March 1985, when they were snatched in broad daylight. It took four decades and lots of sleuthing by an amateur historical crime researcher to get them back to their rightful owner. They\u2019re now on display as part of the museum\u2019s \u201cThe Return of Taos Treasures\u201d exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI, which located and recovered the works, has not announced any arrests in connection with the theft. However, the missing masterpieces have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc15.com\/news\/local-news\/investigations\/have-you-seen-these-stolen-paintings-fbi-involved-in-search-for-missing-treasures\">linked<\/a> with Jerry and Rita Alter, an unassuming husband and wife who purportedly led double lives as high-stakes art thieves.<\/p>\n<p>Jerry died in 2012, followed by Rita in 2017. After the couple\u2019s deaths, antiques dealer David Van Auker was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/09\/09\/nyregion\/a-de-kooning-a-theft-and-an-enduring-mystery.html\">tasked with appraising<\/a> the contents of their three-bedroom home in Cliff, New Mexico, a tiny town near the state\u2019s southwestern corner.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/P_i1fXDZp7B0r4EZmdXZghRJrYU=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(2880x1920:2881x1921)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/24\/2a\/242ac2c5-6a8a-4e4f-9a6a-665ec2885d1a\/61_harwood_museum_by_bill_curry.jpg\" alt=\"Museum exterior in Taos, New Mexico\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      The paintings were returned to the University of New Mexico&#8217;s Harwood Museum of Art in Taos, New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">Bill Curry<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Van Auker found a painting hanging in the couple\u2019s primary bedroom that turned out to be Willem de Kooning\u2019s 1955 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/artmuseum.arizona.edu\/about\/woman-ochres-journey\"><em>Woman-Ochre<\/em><\/a><\/em>, which had been pilfered from the University of Arizona Museum of Art in November 1985. A photograph of the couple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/photograph-offers-link-between-retired-couple-and-160-million-stolen-de-kooning-180969963\/\">placed them in Tucson<\/a> the day before the theft.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery of the missing de Kooning\u2014worth an estimated $160 million and eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/news.arizona.edu\/news\/stolen-painting-returns-home-uarizona\">returned<\/a> to the Arizona museum\u2014made headlines around the world. In 2022, director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allisonotto.com\/\">Allison Otto<\/a> explored the story further in her documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/video\/the-thief-collector-sxsw-documentary-trailer-director-allison-otto-video\/\"><em>The Thief Collector<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@louschachter\">Lou Schachter<\/a>, who became a historical crime researcher after retiring from his corporate job, wondered if other works in the Alters\u2019 estate might have also been purloined. He started <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/true-crime-road-trip\/the-missing-masterpiece-2caebd788a9d\">poking around<\/a> and eventually realized that two other paintings found in the Alters\u2019 home\u2014<em>Aspens<\/em> and <em>Oklahoma Cheyenne<\/em>\u2014were also stolen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe account of the theft at the Harwood is almost identical to the account of the theft at the University of Arizona Museum,\u201d Schachter told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scdailypress.com\/2024\/03\/15\/california-writer-finds-two-stolen-works-estate-now-famous-cliff-couple\/\"><em>Silver City Daily Press<\/em><\/a>\u2019 Juno Ogle last year. \u201cA guy comes in in a big overcoat [and] slashes the painting with a packing knife. He rolls it up and stores it in his overcoat and leaves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A photo featured in <em>The Thief Collector<\/em> also shows Jerry playing a clarinet next to a wall of artwork, including <em>Aspens<\/em> and <em>Oklahoma Cheyenne<\/em>, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taosnews.com\/news\/local-news\/taos-society-of-artists-paintings-recovered\/article_c64b86e1-39d9-59bf-a430-e2c5df616cb4.html\"><em>Taos News<\/em><\/a>\u2019 Geoffrey Plant reported in December.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"video\">\n<div class=\"embedly-plugin\" data-type=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-image\">\n<p>THE THIEF COLLECTOR &#8211; OFFICIAL TRAILER<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/1tT9oFa1k7A\/maxresdefault.jpg\" data-video-id=\"1tT9oFa1k7A\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>  <iframe width=\"854\" src=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"player\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay\"><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Schachter didn\u2019t quite know what to do with what he\u2019d uncovered. So, he decided to send an email explaining his findings to the Harwood\u2019s executive director, <a href=\"https:\/\/harwoodmuseum.org\/about\/harwood-team\/juniper-leherissey\/\">Juniper Leherissey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI responded right away,\u201d Leherissey tells <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taosnews.com\/tempo\/arts\/harwood-heist-and-recovery\/article_ad419e5e-5568-51d8-9e2f-850825cd5bf0.html\"><em>Taos News<\/em><\/a><\/em>\u2019 Haven Lindsey. \u201cI wasn\u2019t aware of the stolen paintings but recognized right away that this was something we needed to act on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The museum quickly organized a volunteer task force to dig into Schachter\u2019s claims. Five weeks later, they alerted the FBI, which launched its own investigation in the spring of 2024. Detectives were able to track down the paintings and return them to the museum roughly a year later, on May 12.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI did not share many details about its investigation, nor how it located the missing paintings. They had been donated to a now-closed thrift store, which sold them through the <a href=\"https:\/\/scottsdaleartauction.com\/\">Scottsdale Art Auction<\/a> in 2018.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/kJwjs8G8PIfk__3PoU41AK9LHlQ=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(3912x2646:3913x2647)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/1d\/75\/1d754f91-b7fa-445e-b9e5-bbf9770f7b95\/7_the_return_of_taos_treasures_exhibition_photo_by_brad_trone.jpg\" alt=\"Empty frames on white wall next to some text\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      The paintings are now on display at the Hardwood Museum of Art\u00a0as part of &#8220;The<em>\u00a0<\/em>Return of Taos Treasures&#8221;\u00a0exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">Brad Trone<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe cooperation of multiple individuals and other entities contacted during the investigation was critical to the recovery of these paintings,\u201d notes the FBI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/contact-us\/field-offices\/albuquerque\/news\/stolen-paintings-recovered-and-returned?\">statement<\/a> announcing the paintings\u2019 return. \u201cAll investigative leads have been exhausted at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FBI also notes in its statement that the Theft of Major Artwork <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/18\/668\">statute<\/a>\u2014a law enacted in 1994 that makes it a federal crime to steal any object of cultural heritage from a museum\u2014was not in effect when the Harwood paintings were stolen.<\/p>\n<p>Now that the paintings have been returned, what\u2019s next for Schachter? Will he continue his amateur detective work?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything is possible,\u201d he tells <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kob.com\/new-mexico\/stolen-art-returned-to-harwood-museum-of-art-after-40-years\/\">KOB<\/a>\u2019s Ryan Laughlin. \u201cI do historical work, so I\u2019m not sure if I will stumble on something else I can solve.
