The \u201cLost City<\/em>\u201d of Petra is Jordan\u2019s most famous visitor sight. However, majestic Wadi Rum is the not-to-be-missed close runner up. Aptly named \u201cThe Valley of the Moon,<\/em>\u201d this other-worldly desert landscape dazzles with its sea of reddish-orange sand dunes & wind-weathered rock formations that dramatically rise out of the valley floor.<\/p>\n

Wadi Rum became famous thanks to \u201cLawrence of Arabia,<\/em>\u201d the 1962 film starring Peter O\u2019Toole. The movie introduced Wadi Rum\u2019s incredible beauty to the rest of the world, attracting a steady stream of tourists and a growing number of film crews. Recent movies filmed here include \u201cDune<\/em>,\u201d \u201cStar Trek<\/em>\u201d & \u201cThe Martian\u201d!<\/em><\/p>\n

\"jordan-wadi-rum\"\"jordan-wadi-rum\"<\/a>Located near Jordan\u2019s southern border, the Wadi Rum Protected Area was designated a reserve in 1998 & became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2011. The majority of the population are Bedouins \u2013 a term which means \u201cdesert dweller.\u201d They have developed eco-adventure tourism and services throughout Wadi Rum.<\/p>\n

With an area of 720 sq. km (280 sq. miles), Wadi Rum is the largest wadi in Jordan. Wadi (in Arabic) refers to the bed or valley of a river that is usually dry. With less than 3 days of rain a year, Wadi Rum has become a popular Middle Eastern destination for hikers, climbers, campers, and nature lovers.<\/p>\n

My Recent Visit to Jordan & Wadi Rum<\/h2>\n

I visited Jordan with a group of six friends in April 2025, after a tour of Egypt. We booked our 6-day Jordan trip through Petra Moon Tours<\/strong>, based in Jordan. They provided us with a great itinerary & an excellent local guide, Ghadain.<\/p>\n

We visited the country\u2019s main sights \u2013 including Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum, and the Dead Sea. I\u2019m happy to report that Jordan really delivered! The trip was a pleasure from start to finish, with safe & easy travel, incredible sights, great food, and friendly local people!<\/p>\n

As expected, our visit to Wadi Rum was one of the trip highlights! We enjoyed a 4\u00d74 jeep tour of the desert landscape and an overnight at a luxury desert camp.<\/p>\n

In this blog post, I will share our wonderful experience visiting the area \u2013 and why I believe Wadi Rum should be on your \u201cmust see\u201d list whenever your plans take you to Petra or any other part of Jordan.<\/p>\n

Arrival at Wadi Rum Visitor Center<\/h2>\n

We had just spent two delightful days in Petra, touring its world-famous ruins \u2013 watch for a separate Petra blog post coming soon! Departing Petra around 1pm, we headed south along the King\u2019s Highway.<\/p>\n

After a 2-hour drive, we arrived at the large, stylish Wadi Rum Visitor Center<\/strong> \u2013 the main gateway to the Wadi Rum Protected Area. All visitors to Wadi Rum must report here before venturing further into the valley.<\/p>\n
