The significance of being “Nacional”. Quinta do Noval’s precious little vineyard.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0W<\/span>hen we think of the Douro vineyards, there is one that has achieved the status of an emblematic vineyard of the region and the coutry. A small exceptional plot discreetly located in the heart of the historic Quinta do Noval<\/b>, next to the estate’s buildings, in the Pinh\u00e3o river valley<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 The vineyard’s “Nacional” designation comes precisely from the fact that the vines are directly rooted in Portuguese soil<\/b>, with their own roots, without the use of American rootstok, i.e.<\/i>, made up <\/span>of traditional Douro
\ngrape varieties planted in national soil<\/b>, exactly as was the case in the
\nregion before the invasion and destruction caused by phylloxera (a tiny insect, a yellow lice that feeds on the roots of the vine, drying out the plant), which
\nreached the Douro vineyards in 1868. This scourge destroyed the majority of the
\nregion’s vineyards (with the exception of three or four vineyards that weren’t
\naffected), but the extraordinary thing about this small parcel of vines is that
\nthey survived and remained immune and resistant to phylloxera, which is an
\nunusual and rare phenomenon and the reason for it is unknown, defying all
\nknowledge and cultivation practices.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 At
\nthe time of the phylloxera crisis in the 19th century, of all the solutions
\ntested, the one that proved most effective was the use of American rootstock, i.e.<\/i>
\nthe combination of a vine that is resistant to phylloxera (the rootstock) with
\nthe desired grape variety (the scion). The rootstock solution is now widely
\nused and it also showed, in addition to pest resistance, to improve plant
\ngrowth and productivity, water management and grape quality. With this method it has been
\npossible to maintain the vineyards with the Douro’s traditional noble grape
\nvarieties.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In
\nthis particular case, Quinta do Noval was hit in 1851, first by powdery mildew
\nand later by phylloxera, at a time in its history when it was going through a
\nrather decadent period. Then the descendants of Rebello Valente (who had bought
\nthe estate in 1862) sold the property in 1894 to Ant\u00f3nio Jos\u00e9 da Silva who, in
\nturn, together with his son-in-law Lu\u00eds Vasconcellos Porto, began a recovery phase
\nof the vineyards and the estate, of its importance and reputation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 The
\norigin of the Nacional vineyard<\/span><\/b> is
\nnot exactly known, since the documentation that made up the Quinta do Noval
\narchive was destroyed by the great fire that occurred in 1981 in the Vila Nova
\nde Gaia warehouses. We know that between 1880 and 1890 Quinta do Noval was hit
\nby phylloxera, which ravaged the vineyards. In 1894, Ant\u00f3nio Jos\u00e9 da Silva
\nembarked on a plan to restore the property and replant it with American vines,
\nwhich were then grafted with the local indigenous grape varieties. As part of this
\nplan, the following interesting reference was recorded in a Quinta do Noval
\ndocument: \u2018Ant\u00f3nio Jos\u00e9 da Silva selected a small plot of vines where he
\nbegan an exhaustive fumigation of the soil with a carbon sulphide solution<\/i>.\u2019
\nAccording to Cristiano van Zeller (responsible for the administration of Quinta
\ndo Noval from 1982 to 1994), at this stage there were important chemical
\ninterventions in the soil, and in his grandfather’s time, there were still
\nlarge syringes used to apply a solution based on carbon sulphide over the years
\nas a method of combating phylloxera.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Vineyard
\ncharacterisation.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 The
\nNacional vineyard<\/span><\/b> is a small, reserved
\nand persistent vineyard that was planted a century ago, in 1924<\/b>, and
\nconsists of a total of 6,000 vines planted<\/b>, as we mentioned, directly
\ninto the schist soil. These are two small plots of old vines planted on nine\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>traditional terraces,<\/b>\u00a0varying in size<\/span>, <\/span>with a total area of 1,6 hectares<\/b> and a north-west exposure<\/b>, at an
\naltitude of 375 metres<\/b> and a space between vines of around 1 metre. The
\ncomposition of the soil is schist.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 The
\nvineyard currently has an average age of 50 years<\/span><\/b>. It is made up of a field-blend of various traditional
\nDouro grape varieties, with a predominance of the Sous\u00e3o variety (which makes
\nup around 35% of the vineyard and is certainly at the origin of the wine’s
\ncolour intensity) and also with an important presence of the Touriga Nacional,
\nTouriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Francisca, Tinto C\u00e3o and Tinta Barroca
\nvarieties. The fact that they have not been grafted does not seem to harm the
\nlongevity of the vines, ho<\/span><\/span>wever,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>there<\/span><\/span> <\/span>are<\/span><\/span>\u00a0some\u00a0<\/span>differences<\/span><\/span> <\/span>to<\/span><\/span> <\/span>be<\/span><\/span> <\/span>noted\u00a0<\/span><\/span>when<\/span><\/span> <\/span>comparing<\/span><\/span> <\/span>it<\/span><\/span> <\/span>with<\/span><\/span> <\/span>the<\/span><\/span> <\/span>others grafted vines that are nearby<\/span><\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0from the outset it has a less obvious vigour,
\nwhich is revealed by the small trunks of the vines, lower foliage density and a less intense green colouring of the leaves, smaller bunches of grapes and a
\nproduction that is approximately half that of a normal vineyard, but which nevertheless
\ngives the grapes greater concentration.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 There
\nare three types of vine trellising systems used: Guyot, spur and cane.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0One of the terraces of the Nacional vineyard consists of the vineyard’s nursery, a
\nsmall plot of land where the vines are also directed planted in the soil and take
\nseveral years to take root, and that will ensure the future of the vineyard.
\nAfter the pruning work, the best vines are selected and then planted so that in
\nthe future they can replace the gaps left by the vines and grape varieties of
\nthe Nacional vineyard that are lost. Around 20 to 30 vines are replanted each
\nyear, using the same grape variety planted directly in the ground (these grapevines
\ntake 7 years to produce their first bunches).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 As a
\ncuriosity, the experiment of planting grapevines directly in the soil without the
\nAmerican rootstock has already been carried out in other parts of the property,
\nbut these experiments proved to be unsuccessful and unviable.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Viticulture<\/span><\/b>. All the work carried out in the vineyard is done by hand,
\nthere is greater involvement in monitoring and caring for the vines. Organic
\nviticulture is practised, with methods that respect the natural balance of
\nthe ecosystem, without the use of pesticides (the image below illustrates the
\nalternative system used successfully, every spring small ribbons that are pheromone diffusers placed in the vines to prevent communication and cause
\nsexual confusion between insects and thus control pests) or herbicides.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 As we
\nmentioned above, the yield of this vineyard is much lower and corresponds to
\nalmost half the yield per hectare and sometimes a third of the yield of a
\nnormal vineyard, around 10 to 15 hectolitres per hectare, whereas the other
\ngrafted vines produce on average around 30 to 35 hectolitres per hectare.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Vinification<\/span><\/b>. In order to monitor the ripeness of the grapes and decide
\non the right time to harvest, many berries of the different grape varieties are
\ncollected from different parts of the vineyard and analyzed. <\/span><\/span>The
\nNacional vineyard is usually the last to be harvested, the harvest is done
\nby hand and the grapes are all picked at the same time<\/b>.<\/span> <\/span>This operation is carried out in one day, \u201cwe do some
\nreal gardening in the vineyard and in the harvest to get everything done on day
\nx, the day on which everything is harvested in a row<\/i>\u201d. In Quinta do Noval’s
\nold winery, all the work is handmade and winemaking is carried out using
\ntraditional methods, the vineyard field blend in maintained and all the
\ngrape varieties are vinified together <\/b>in the same granite lagar, typically
\nlagar 7, which has a maximum capacity of approximately five Port wine casks
\n(3,000 litres), it\u2019s own lagar that makes the same wine over the years. Foot
\ntreading throughout the fermentation period ensures a good, continuous
\nmaceration of the grape juice with the skins.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Fermentation
\ntakes place over two days until the must is fortified with the addition of
\ngrape brandy. The wine then goes to the estate’s wine cellar, located on a
\nlower level next to the lagar house, where it will spend a period of 18 months in an old
\noak and chestnut large barrel, a “tonel” with a capacity of 2,500 litres. The
\nwine is constantly monitored and assessed throughout this period to evaluate
\nits quality and the decision to bottle it as a Vintage Nacional.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n


<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nQuinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Nacional is what it is because of the grapes and
\nwhere they come from. It\u2019s terroir forges its greatness<\/i><\/b>.\u201d Christian
\nSeely<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 The Nacional vintage is the paradigm of a vintage Port from a single vineyard parcel, a
\nmicro-<\/b><\/span>terroir<\/span><\/b> that, because it is a special vineyard, has its own character
\nand rhythm,<\/span> <\/span>different
\nfrom the rest of the vineyards on the estate and, in the years in which it stands
\nout, produces\u00a0unparalleled wines with a particular and different dimension. The consequence of this is that it can and does happen that in years in which
\nthe classic Quinta do Noval vintage Port is not declared, the Vintage Nacional
\nis declared and vise versa, such as 2007, a year of a generalised classic vintage
\nPort declaration, in which the Quinta do Noval vintage was declared and the
\nVintage Nacional was not declared. And in those years when the Nacional vintage is not declared, <\/span><\/span>the grapes from this vineyard are
\nincluded in the blend of the house’s classic vintage or LBV Ports.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Initially
\nit wasn’t commercialised, it was a wine destined to be offered to the house’s
\nbest costumers, but which over time began to be increasingly highly valued.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 As
\nmentioned above, the present Nacional vineyard was planted in 1924. The date
\nthe<\/span> <\/span>vineyard
\nwas planted makes the statement on some labels of older bottles \u201cproduced from
\npre phylloxera grapes\u201d not really accurate (like the examples in the following
\nimages).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n
<\/a>
<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 The
\nfirst Nacional vintage originated from the 1931 harvest<\/b>, when the vineyard
\nwas only 7 years old. It became a mythical vintage, referred to in 1999 as one
\nof the great wines of the 20th century by the specialised US magazine Wine
\nSpectator. The 1963 Nacional vintage, which has reached legendary status,
\nas been described as <\/span><\/span>iconic, mythical and incredible a<\/span><\/span>nd <\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span> <\/span>adjectives<\/span><\/span> <\/span>go<\/span><\/span> <\/span>on<\/span><\/span> <\/span>and<\/span><\/span> <\/span>on<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/span>In turn, the 1994
\nNacional vintage was classified by the same influential publication in 1997
\nwith the maximum 100pts score. Later, the American critic James Suckling
\nawarded again 100pts to the 2011 Nacional vintage.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 The low
\nproductivity of the vineyard, with an annual production of 2000 to 3000 litres,
\nvaries between 100 and 250 cases (200 cases of 12 bottles which totals 2400
\nbottles), which is a small quantity for the entire world market. A rare wine, it
\nis sold in small quantities and by quota to distributors.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 For all
\nthe reasons described, it is a vintage with a very distinctive character and a
\nmagnificent reputation, highly appreciated and valued by specialists and
\nconnoisseurs of extraordinary Port wines. It can be characterised as having a
\nconsistent and characteristic profile throughout the various editions, with
\ngreater depth, concentration and complexity, freshness and elegance.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 These
\nare vintages that age for many decades, a Nacional vintage can last one hundred
\nyears.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Quinta
\ndo Noval Nacional Colheita Tawny Port?<\/span><\/b> Some of the Port
\nwine from this vineyard remains in casks ageing in wood, as a test for a
\nfuture Nacional Colheita Tawny Port, which the house has been announcing for some years.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\npensarmos nas vinhas do Douro, h\u00e1 uma que alcan\u00e7ou um estatuto pr\u00f3prio de uma vinha
\nemblem\u00e1tica da regi\u00e3o e do pa\u00eds. \u00c9 uma pequena vinha

\ndesigna\u00e7\u00e3o \u201cNacional\u201d da vinha resulta precisamente do facto de as videiras
\nestarem directamente enraizadas no solo portugu\u00eas<\/b>, com as suas pr\u00f3prias
\nra\u00edzes, em p\u00e9-franco, sem recurso ao porta-enxerto americano, isto \u00e9,
\nconstitu\u00edda por castas portuguesas tradicionais plantadas em solo nacional,<\/b>
\nexactamente como acontecia na regi\u00e3o antes da invas\u00e3o e destrui\u00e7\u00e3o provocada
\npela filoxera\u00a0 <\/span>(um insecto m\u00ednimo que se
\nalimenta das ra\u00edzes da videira secando a planta), que em 1868 chegou \u00e0s vinhas
\ndo Douro. Este flagelo destruiu a maioria das vinhas da regi\u00e3o (com a excep\u00e7\u00e3o
\nde tr\u00eas ou quatro vinhas que n\u00e3o foram atingidas), no entanto, o que esta pequena
\nparcela de vinha tem de extraordin\u00e1rio \u00e9 as vides sobreviverem e terem
\npermanecido imunes e resistentes \u00e0 filoxera, o que \u00e9 um fen\u00f3meno invulgar e
\nraro, desconhecendo-se ao certo o motivo por que tal acontece, desafiando todo
\no conhecimento e pr\u00e1ticas de cultura.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Na
\n\u00e9poca da crise da filoxera, no s\u00e9c. XIX, de entre todas as solu\u00e7\u00f5es testadas a
\nque se revelou mais eficaz foi a utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o de porta enxerto americano, isto \u00e9,
\na combina\u00e7\u00e3o de uma videira que \u00e9 resistente \u00e0 filoxera (o porta-enxerto) com a
\ncasta desejada (o enxerto). A solu\u00e7\u00e3o dos porta-enxertos \u00e9 hoje de utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o
\ngeneralizada e revelou, para al\u00e9m da resist\u00eancia \u00e0 praga, melhorar o
\ncrescimento e a produtividade da planta, a gest\u00e3o da \u00e1gua e a qualidade da uva. Com este m\u00e9todo foi
\nposs\u00edvel manter as vinhas com as castas nobres tradicionais do Douro.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 No
\ncaso concreto, a Quinta do Noval foi atingida, a partir de 1851, primeiro pelo
\no\u00eddio e mais tarde pela filoxera, numa \u00e9poca da sua hist\u00f3ria em que atravessava
\num per\u00edodo bastante decadente. Depois, os descendentes de Rebello Valente (que
\ntinha adquirido a quinta em 1862), em 1894 venderam a propriedade a Ant\u00f3nio
\nJos\u00e9 da Silva que, por sua vez, em conjunto com o genro Lu\u00eds Vasconcellos
\nPorto, iniciou uma fase de recupera\u00e7\u00e3o das vinhas e da propriedade, da sua
\nimport\u00e2ncia e reputa\u00e7\u00e3o. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 A
\norigem da vinha Nacional<\/span><\/b> n\u00e3o \u00e9
\nexactamente conhecida, uma vez que fonte principal sobre este assunto, a documenta\u00e7\u00e3o que constitu\u00eda o arquivo da
\nQuinta do Noval, foi destru\u00edda pelo grande inc\u00eandio que ocorreu em 1981 nos
\narmaz\u00e9ns de Vila Nova de Gaia. Conhecemos que, entre os anos 1880 e 1890 a
\nQuinta do Noval foi atingida pela filoxera que fustigou as vinhas. Em 1894,
\nAnt\u00f3nio Jos\u00e9 da Silva empreendeu um plano de recupera\u00e7\u00e3o da propriedade e a
\nreplanta\u00e7\u00e3o com vinhas americanas que a seguir eram enxertadas com as castas da
\nregi\u00e3o. Na prossecu\u00e7\u00e3o deste plano, surge a seguinte refer\u00eancia de um documento
\nda Quinta do Noval: \u201cAnt\u00f3nio Jos\u00e9 da Silva seleccionou uma pequena parcela
\nde vinha onde iniciou uma exaustiva fumiga\u00e7\u00e3o do solo com uma solu\u00e7\u00e3o sulfurosa<\/i>.\u201d.
\nDe acordo com Cristiano van Zeller (respons\u00e1vel pela administra\u00e7\u00e3o da Quinta do
\nNoval, de 1982 a 1994), nesta fase, houve importantes interven\u00e7\u00f5es qu\u00edmicas no
\nsolo, e no tempo do seu av\u00f4, existiam ainda grandes seringas utilizadas para
\naplicar uma solu\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0 base de sulfureto de carbono, ao longo dos anos, como
\nm\u00e9todo de combate \u00e0 filoxera. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A caracteriza\u00e7\u00e3o da vinha.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 A
\nvinha Nacional<\/span><\/b> \u00e9 uma pequena vinha, reservada
\ne persistente, foi plantada h\u00e1 um<\/b><\/span> s\u00e9culo <\/span><\/b>atr\u00e1s, em 1924<\/b>, e \u00e9 constitu\u00edda por um
\ntotal de 6000 cepas<\/b> plantadas, como referimos, directamente no solo de
\nxisto. S\u00e3o duas pequenas parcelas de vinha velha plantadas em nove socalcos
\ntradicionais<\/b><\/span>, com dimens\u00f5es
\nvari\u00e1veis, a que corresponde uma \u00e1rea total de 1,6 hectares<\/span><\/b> e uma <\/b><\/span>exposi\u00e7\u00e3o a noroeste<\/span><\/b>, a uma altitude de 375 metros e um espa\u00e7o
\nentre videiras de cerca de 1 metro. A composi\u00e7\u00e3o do solo \u00e9 xisto. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 A vinha tem actualmente uma idade m\u00e9dia de 50
\nanos<\/b>. \u00c9 composta por um field-blend de diversas castas tradicionais do
\nDouro, com predomin\u00e2ncia da casta Sous\u00e3o (que constitui cerca de 35% do
\nencepamento e certamente est\u00e1 na origem da intensidade de c\u00f4r do vinho) e tamb\u00e9m com
\numa presen\u00e7a importante das castas Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa,
\nTinta Roriz, Tinta Francisca, Tinto C\u00e3o e Tinta Barroca. O facto de n\u00e3o terem
\nsido enxertadas n\u00e3o parece prejudicar a longevidade das videiras, no entanto, \u00e9
\numa vinha com algumas diferen\u00e7as relativamente \u00e0s vinhas enxertadas que est\u00e3o
\npr\u00f3ximas, tem um menor vigor evidente, que \u00e9 revelado pelos pequenos troncos
\ndas vinhas, menor densidade de folhagem e colora\u00e7\u00e3o de um verde menos intenso,
\ncachos de uvas mais pequenos e uma produ\u00e7\u00e3o que \u00e9 aproximadamente metade de uma
\nvinha normal, o que por sua vez confere maior concentra\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0s uvas.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Os sistemas de condu\u00e7\u00e3o das videiras utilizados
\ns\u00e3o tr\u00eas: <\/span>Guyot, vara e tal\u00e3o.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0Um dos socalcos da vinha Nacional \u00e9 constitu\u00eddo pelo viveiro de cepas da
\nvinha, uma pequena parcela tamb\u00e9m plantada em p\u00e9-franco em que as vides demoram
\nv\u00e1rios anos a enraizar e que assegura a renova\u00e7\u00e3o e o futuro da vinha. Ap\u00f3s os
\ntrabalhos de poda s\u00e3o selecionadas as melhores varas que v\u00e3o depois ser
\nplantadas para futuramente substitu\u00edrem as falhas das videiras e as castas da
\nvinha Nacional que entram em fal\u00eancia e se perdem, com o mesmo gen\u00f3tipo da
\nvideira que ali estava anteriormente. Numa vinha velha \u00e9 normal haver muitas
\nperdas. Por ano s\u00e3o replantados cerca de 20 a 30 p\u00e9s de vinha, usa-se a mesma
\ncasta plantada directamente no solo. (a vinha em p\u00e9 franco demora 7 anos a
\nproduzir os primeiros cachos).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Como curiosidade, j\u00e1 foi tentado plantar videiras directamente no solo, sem porta enxerto, noutros locais da propriedade, no entanto, estas experi\u00eancias foram invi\u00e1veis e n\u00e3o tiveram sucesso.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Viticultura.<\/span><\/b> <\/span>Todos os trabalhos
\nrealizados na vinha s\u00e3o feitos \u00e0 m\u00e3o, h\u00e1 um maior envolvimento no
\nacompanhamento e no cuidado com as videiras e \u00e9 praticada uma viticultura
\norg\u00e2nica<\/b> com pr\u00e1ticas que respeitam o equil\u00edbrio natural do ecossistema, sem

\ninsectos, controlando as pragas nas vinhas) ou herbicidas.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Como
\nreferimos atr\u00e1s, a produ\u00e7\u00e3o desta vinha \u00e9 bastante menor e corresponde a cerca
\nde quase metade da produ\u00e7\u00e3o por hectare e por vezes mesmo um ter\u00e7o do rendimento de
\numa vinha normal, cerca de 10 a 15 hectolitros por hectare, quando as restantes
\nvinhas enxertadas produzem em m\u00e9dia cerca de 30 a 35 hectolitros por hectare<\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Vinifica\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/span> <\/b>Para o acompanhamento da evolu\u00e7\u00e3o da
\nmatura\u00e7\u00e3o das uvas e decis\u00e3o do momento certo da colheita s\u00e3o recolhidos e
\nanalisados muitos bagos das diferentes variedades de castas existentes em
\ndiferentes pontos da vinha. <\/span><\/span><\/span>As
\nparcelas da vinha Nacional s\u00e3o habitualmente as \u00faltimas a ser vindimadas, a
\nvindima \u00e9 manual e as uvas s\u00e3o todas colhidas no mesmo momento<\/b>, <\/span><\/span>esta
\nopera\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 realizada na totalidade num s\u00f3 dia, \u201cfazemos uma aut\u00eantica
\njardinagem na vinha e na vindima para tudo estar pronto no dia x, dia em que se vindima tudo
\nde seguida<\/i>\u201d. Na antiga adega da Quinta do Noval todo o trabalho \u00e9
\nartesanal, mantem-se o field-blend e a vinifica\u00e7\u00e3o em conjunto de todas as variedades de castas que comp\u00f5em a vinha<\/b> <\/span><\/span>com m\u00e9todos
\ntradicionais<\/b><\/span><\/span>, sempre
\nno mesmo lagar de granito, tipicamente o lagar 7, de menor dimens\u00e3o, que tem
\numa capacidade m\u00e1xima aproximada correspondente a cinco pipas (3.000 litros),
\num lagar pr\u00f3prio que ao longo dos anos faz o mesmo vinho. A pisa a p\u00e9 decorre durante
\ntodo o per\u00edodo de dura\u00e7\u00e3o da fermenta\u00e7\u00e3o e assegura uma boa e cont\u00ednua
\nmacera\u00e7\u00e3o do sumo das uvas com as pel\u00edculas.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 A fermenta\u00e7\u00e3o decorre durante dois dias at\u00e9 ao
\nmomento da sua interrup\u00e7\u00e3o com a fortifica\u00e7\u00e3o do mosto com a adi\u00e7\u00e3o
\nde aguardente v\u00ednica. Depois o vinho passa para a adega da quinta localizada num
\nplano inferior junto \u00e0 casa dos lagares, onde decorrer\u00e1 o est\u00e1gio durante 18
\nmeses, que se realiza num tonel antigo de carvalho e castanho com 2.500 litros
\nde capacidade. O vinho \u00e9 acompanhado e avaliado permanentemente ao longo deste
\nper\u00edodo para aferir a qualidade e a decis\u00e3o de engarrafar como Vintage
\nNacional.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\nvintage \u00e9 o paradigma de um Porto vintage de uma parcela \u00fanica, de um
\nmicro-terroir<\/b> que, por ser uma vinha especial, tem um comportamento e um
\nritmo pr\u00f3prios, distinto das restantes vinhas da quinta e, nos anos em que se
\nafirma, produz vinhos inigual\u00e1veis, com uma dimens\u00e3o particular e diferente,
\no que tem como consequ\u00eancia que aconte\u00e7a que em anos em que o vintage cl\u00e1ssico
\nda Qu<\/span>inta do Noval n\u00e3o \u00e9 declarado, seja declarado o Vintage Nacional e vise
\nversa, como o exemplo de 2007, um ano de declara\u00e7\u00e3o cl\u00e1ssica generalizada, em
\nque foi declarado o vintage Quinta do\u00a0
\n<\/span>Noval e n\u00e3o foi declarado o Vintage Nacional. <\/span><\/span>Nos
\nanos em que n\u00e3o \u00e9 declarado vintage Nacional, as uvas desta vinha integram o lote do
\nvintage cl\u00e1ssico ou do Porto LBV da casa.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0 Inicialmente n\u00e3o era comercializado,
\nera um vinho que se destinava a ser oferecido aos melhores clientes da casa,
\nmas com o tempo come\u00e7ou a ser progressivamente valorizado.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 Como referimos atr\u00e1s, a actual vinha Nacional foi plantada
\nem 1924. A data de planta\u00e7\u00e3o da vinha torna a indica\u00e7\u00e3o que surge em alguns r\u00f3tulos de
\ngarrafas mais antigas \u201cproduced from pre phylloxera grapes\u201d, impreciso (como os
\nexemplos das imagens seguintes).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 O primeiro vintage Nacional foi da colheita de
\n1931<\/b>, quando a vinha tinha apenas 7 anos de exist\u00eancia, tornou-se um vintage
\nm\u00edtico, referido em 1999 como um dos grandes vinhos do s\u00e9c. XX, pela revista
\nespecializada norte americana Wine Spectator. O vintage Nacional 1963 que
\natingiu um estatuto lend\u00e1rio, esgota os adjectivos, ic\u00f3nico, m\u00edtico, incr\u00edvel.
\nPor sua vez o vintage nacional 1994 foi classificado pela mesma publica\u00e7\u00e3o em
\n1997 com a pontua\u00e7\u00e3o m\u00e1xima, 100pts. Depois, o critico norte americano James
\nSuckling atribuiu 100pts ao vintage Nacional 2011.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A
\nbaixa produtividade da vinha, com uma produ\u00e7\u00e3o anual de 2000 a 3000 litros,
\nvari\u00e1vel, resulta em aproximadamente entre 100 a 250 caixas (200 caixas de 12 garrafas que totalizam
\n2400 garrafas), o que \u00e9 uma pequena quantidade para o mercado mundial. Um Porto
\nvintage raro, que \u00e9 vendido em pequenas quantidades e por quotas aos
\ndistribuidores. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Por
\ntudo quanto foi descrito, \u00e9 um vintage com um caracter muito pr\u00f3prio e com uma
\nmagnifica reputa\u00e7\u00e3o, muito apreciado e valorizado pelos especialistas e
\napreciadores de bons vinhos do Porto. Pode-se caracterizar como tendo um perfil
\nconsistente e caracter\u00edstico ao longo das v\u00e1rias edi\u00e7\u00f5es, com maior
\nprofundidade, concentra\u00e7\u00e3o e complexidade, com frescura e eleg\u00e2ncia.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
