After the surgery, for a full<br \/>\nweek, he was bleeding.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sometimes a lot,<br \/>\nsometimes a little but each time I saw blood, I went to a hospital or urgent<br \/>\ncare. Even at the one week follow up, the surgeon said he was fine. The<br \/>\nfollowing day, Michael died from blood loss and a body full of infection.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>All signs were missed by 5 doctors and his<br \/>\nsurgeon. Oh well, it\u2019s too late to turn back the clock.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">No one ever<br \/>\nasked what I saw went wrong.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>What could<br \/>\nI have done differently?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>All the \u201cblame\u201d<br \/>\nwas on the doctors and yes even the nurses who saw him.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>If I knew then what I know now, could Michael<br \/>\nbe alive?<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I will never know. We can\u2019t<br \/>\nmeasure the positive outcomes.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>When things<br \/>\ngo right, well everyone is expecting that but when it goes wrong, all doors get<br \/>\nclosed.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial;\">So, as we<br \/>\ncome to another Patient Safety Awareness Week, remember that we, all of us who<br \/>\nuse the healthcare system have some responsibility to practice safe care<br \/>\nthrough education and awareness.\u00a0 Please<br \/>\nlearn what you can and don\u2019t be a passive partner in patient safety.\u00a0 Be aware and involved and let\u2019s fix the system<br \/>\nthrough our behavior and let those who work in healthcare fix it from within.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"\/><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 When Things Go Wrong, Is it About Blame?
