They knew the big picture.{1} As I meditate on these declarations in Abner Chou\u2019s book, <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Hermeneutics of the Biblical Writers,<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0I also think about the word <\/span><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>chain<\/span><\/em><\/strong><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span> <\/span><\/em><span>Chou frequently mentions. Specifically, I recognize how the chain was laid out for the apostles to build upon in the New Testament.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 od2cv xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-4r78y1980\"><span class=\"-gksU\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>Accordingly, there are various examples of how the prophets arranged for later writers to<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 od2cv xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-m64971982\"><span class=\"-gksU\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>comment on their texts. One example is <\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah%207%3A14&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:#E3783E;text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Isaiah 7:14<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>, which is reused in <\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%201%3A23&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:#E3783E;text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Matthew 1:23<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span> (the Virgin Birth). Like other prophets, Isaiah\u2019s mentality focuses on the present and the future. The context of Isaiah 7 shows Isaiah\u2019s historical redemptive awareness. The immediate context suggests the present situation relates to something grander; he is not just speaking about the present situation. Additionally, the language used earlier in Isaiah (cf. <\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah%201%3A26&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:#E3783E;text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>1:26<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>, <\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah%201%3A27&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:#E3783E;text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>27<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>; <\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah%204%3A3&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:#E3783E;text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>4:3<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>) shows that the situation in <\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah%207&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:#E3783E;text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>chapter 7<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span> is not just about the present but God\u2019s greater agenda for exile and restoration. Likewise, Isaiah\u2019s use of the \u201cHouse of David\u201d evidences that he believed the current situation threatened Ahaz and the entire Davidic dynasty (<\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah%207%3A2&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:#E3783E;text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>7:2)<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:rgb(0, 0, 0);text-decoration:inherit\"><span>. Furthermore, Isaiah knew complex theological concepts like the Messiah. His writing develops that idea, and he is aware that his words will have a bearing on the future.{2}<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 od2cv xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-jgho3602\"><span class=\"-gksU\"><span>And so, the apostles would pick up on the chain laid by the prophets. One way to review the hermeneutical disposition of the apostles is to examine how they introduce their Old Testament quotations. For example, a standard introduction is \u201cfor it is written\u201d (cf. <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%204%3A10&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Matt. 4:10<\/span><\/u><\/a><span>; <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke%204%3A10&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Luke 4:10,<\/span><\/u><\/a><span> <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts%201%3A20&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Acts 1:20<\/span><\/u><\/a><span>; <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Rom.%208%3A36&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Rom. 8:36;<\/span><\/u><\/a><span> <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Gal.3%3A10&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Gal.3:10<\/span><\/u><\/a><span>). Other prescriptions are shorter with only \u201cbecause\u201d or \u201cfor\u201d (cf. <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Cor.%206%3A16&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>1 Cor. 6:16<\/span><\/u><\/a><span>; <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Gal%203%3A11&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Gal 3:11<\/span><\/u><\/a><span>; <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Heb.%207%3A17&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Heb. 7:17<\/span><\/u><\/a><span>; <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=James%202%3A11&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>James 2:11<\/span><\/u><\/a><span>; <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1%20Peter%203%3A10&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>1 Peter 3:10<\/span><\/u><\/a><span>). These are a few just examples of how they claim the Old Testament is the basis for the apostles\u2019 reasoning.{3}<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 od2cv xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-i8g4i623\"><span class=\"-gksU\"><span>Among many insightful observations and topics interwoven between the Old Testament<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 od2cv xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-dzhkj625\"><span class=\"-gksU\"><span>and the New Testament, perhaps one of the most impactful on this reader is understanding how the apostles\u2019 use of the Old Testament seems to stem from how Christ used the Old Testament. Jesus identified Himself as the Stone, prophesied in <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalm%20118%3A22&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Psalm 118:22<\/span><\/u><\/a><span> and <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah%2028%3A16&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Isaiah 28:16<\/span><\/u><\/a><span> (cf. <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matt.%2021%3A42&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Matt. 21:42)<\/span><\/u><\/a><span>, and Peter restates this illustration in <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Acts%204%3A11&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Acts 4:11<\/span><\/u><\/a><span>. Jesus refers to Himself as the Servant who comes to die for the many (<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark%2010%3A45&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Mark 10:45<\/span><\/u><\/a><span>, cf. <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isa%2053%3A11&amp;version=LSB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Isa 53:11<\/span><\/u><\/a><span>). The imagery continues into Acts.{4} Ultimately, this understanding shows how the apostles revered the Lord\u2019s words and acknowledged His divine authorship of the Old Testament.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 od2cv xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-gh80k640\"><span class=\"-gksU\"><span>Beyond their harmony with the prophets, the apostles were consistent with each other.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 od2cv xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-n12m5642\"><span class=\"-gksU\"><span>This is due to their focus on God&#8217;s intention. The uniformity of the apostles is extraordinary. Obviously, the apostles were assisted by the Holy Spirit, but they held a deep underlying hermeneutical method and logic. This stemmed from their awareness of how the prophets wrote and used Scripture. As such,  prophetic and apostolic hermeneutics validate the Old Testament and serve as a canonical consciousness for the entire Bible.
