Some 15 years ago, I was driving in the direction of Lubao<\/b> when I found a row
\nof stores along the road, and one instantly caught my eye: \u201cPRINCE SECOND
\nHAND-LUMBER and Antique Shop<\/b>\u201d. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Of
\ncourse, I had to stop. When I came in, I was met by a young couple, and their
\nlittle boy, who was carrying an old silver-plated monstrance. I asked if the
\nmonstrance was for sale, and the father said, it is, but right now the boy
\nwouldn\u2019t let it go, as he was \u201cplaying prusisyon<\/i>\u201d, walking around the room,
\nholding the monstrance, pretending to be a priest in a procession.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nfather said to give him a few minutes while he talk with his son\u2014Prince<\/b>–who,
\nat that point was adamantly holding tight to the monstrance and would not let
\nit go In the meantime, he said, please feel free to check the other stuff in
\nhis warehouse.<\/p>\n

Thank
\nGod, the big piles of lumber from demolished old houses were separated from the
\n\u201cantique\u201d section of his shop, that included vintage furniture, aparadors,<\/i>
\nsalvaged architectural details and iron grills. I noticed a few religious items
\nthere: an escayola<\/i> Buenviaje<\/b> in its own urna, <\/i>a framed communion certificate.<\/p>\n

There
\nmust be more where they come from, I thought to myself. And sure enough, when I
\nopened a comoda<\/i>, an inner shelf revealed something extraordinary\u2014a naked santo,
\nwith a thin manikin body, outfitted with a solid bone head and hands!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One look,
\nand I saw a vision of San Isidro Labrador<\/b> holding a farm implement. The shop
\nowner entered the room at this point, ending my reverie. \u201cOh, you found the old
\ndoll\u201d, he said. I corrected him by saying that the figure is, by all
\nindications, a santo. \u201cAh, I didn’t know it’s a santo<\/i>! That means it will be a little bit more
\nexpensive then\u201d, he continued. Me and my big mouth.<\/p>\n

When he
\nmentioned the price, well, it wasn\u2019t bad as I imagined it to be! In fact, I
\ncould pay for it now! So that\u2019s how I got the bone-faced San Isidro<\/b> home.<\/span><\/p>\n

The next
\nwork week, straight to the taller <\/i>of Dr. Raffy Lopez<\/b> the santo<\/i> went. The 10
\ninch high santo, he said, was finished well, considering it was bone, a medium
\ndifficult to carve as it is brittle, breaking easily. This does not allow the
\ncarver much leeway to carve in finer details, which explains why bone santos do
\nnot have well-delineated faces and hands, looking stiffer, more folksy than
\ntheir ivory counterparts. But this did not diminish at all the charming quality
\nof this piece.<\/p>\n

There
\nwas a possibility too that the santo<\/i> was originally a San Jose,<\/b> as it was found
\nwithout identifying elements associated with San Isidro,<\/b> like an ox, kneeling
\nlandlord, a plowing angel. But Dr. Lopez<\/b> was confident he could recreate San
\nIsidro<\/b>\u2019s likeness using this bone figure, even without those iconographic
\nparts.<\/p>\n

The
\nfirst thing he need to do was to look for a proper base for it, and he found
\none\u2014a folksy painted mortar base with remnants of green and dull yellow colors.
\nOnce he had that, he started his work on the bone santo<\/i>, a process that took a
\nmonth.<\/span><\/p>\n

When,
\nfinally, he revealed SAN ISIDRO LABRADOR<\/b>, the results were dramatic as seen
\nfrom these photos. Only the lips needed to be defined, as the bone head still
\nhad its original glass eyes and painted beard. A new jusi <\/i>wig and an old halo
\nfrom the doctor\u2019s collection topped the head of the santo.<\/p>\n

The deep
\nyellow satin cape and the knee-length drab green tunic complemented the colors
\nof the base, which raised the santo<\/i>\u2019s height to about 16 inches tall. The gold
\nembroidery was limited to the hems of the cape and the lower part of the tunic,
\nfitting for a male saint.<\/p>\n

The
\nrestores San Isidro<\/b> sports knee high, leather boots, fashioned from soft
\nimitation leather scraps. His left hand clutches a new, long-handled shover
\nmade of wood and tin. As the santo was tall and narrow. I had a customized
\nglass case made for him, similar to Japan-made glass doll cases.<\/p>\n

I only
\nhave 5 bone santos<\/i> in my collection, and this restored San Isidro<\/b> is one of the
\nmore special ones because of the story of its discovery, finding it by mere
\nhappenstance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Oh, and the silver monstrance? I got that too, the next day,
\npried off from the hands of Prince by his father, while he lay sleeping. I
\nwonder what happened when he woke up. He should be about 18 years old now\u2014is he
\npursuing a priestly vocation? I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if he did.<\/p>\n
