Soft Touch Materials trend – Why Texture is Everything

In the ever-evolving world of interior design, we are increasingly seeing a shift towards multisensory environments—spaces that not only look beautiful but feel inviting and engaging to the touch. As interior design continues to explore deeper emotional connections with our surroundings, one key trend is the focus on soft, tactile surfaces that demand attention—not just visually, but physically as well.

At Milan Design Week 2025, it became evident that soft touch materials are making waves in the design world. This trend is all about textures that beg to be touched—fabrics and finishes that offer comfort, luxury, and a deep, sensory experience. From luxurious leather to plush velvets, designers are pushing the boundaries of traditional material palettes to create sensory-rich spaces that are as comforting as they are beautiful.

The Return of Leather – but with a new twist

Leather, historically a symbol of sophistication, has made a striking return at this Milan Design Week. However, it’s not the stiff, polished leather of past decades. Today’s leather is softer, matte, and more inviting. This shift reflects a broader trend in design toward more tactile, emotionally resonant materials. Designers are moving away from overly glossy and rigid leather surfaces, instead opting for supple, slightly matte finishes that evoke a sense of quiet luxury and comfort.

Leather is being used in everything from upholstered furniture to accents like pillows and throws, offering both visual appeal and physical comfort. In furniture design, expect to see soft leather upholstery paired with natural wood or textured metal, creating a contrast that appeals both visually and to the touch. This combination of warm, soft textures with more raw, natural materials invites interaction, making these pieces not just functional but tactile art in their own right.

Plush, Cozy Fabrics: soft touch trend

If leather brings a sense of refined luxury, plush, soft fabrics bring an aura of coziness and enveloping warmth. The trend toward fluffy and cloud-like textiles is evident across a range of interior elements, from sofas and cushions to curtains and throw blankets. High-pile fabrics, like chenille and bouclé, create a tactile experience that invites you to sink into the surface and feel at home.

In 2026, expect to see a move toward fabrics that are ultra-soft and have a luxurious, almost tactile “weight” to them. These materials are particularly popular for large, comfortable furniture pieces—oversized sectionals, armchairs, and beds designed to wrap you in their softness. This design trend connects deeply with the growing focus on wellness, as these tactile surfaces help to create calming, serene spaces that foster relaxation and comfort.

Plush fabrics are also being used to create textural contrasts with other materials, such as hard surfaces like glass, concrete, or stone. This juxtaposition of soft and hard creates visual and tactile intrigue, where plush textures soften the otherwise cool and smooth surfaces, adding a humanizing, approachable feel to the space.

Vegan Leather Alternatives: when softness meets sustainability

As designers look for more ethical and sustainable solutions, vegan leather alternatives are gaining traction—not just as substitutes, but as desirable materials in their own right. Made from innovative sources like cactus, apple waste, and mycelium, these materials combine soft, matte textures with a low-impact footprint.

They bring a luxurious feel while aligning with growing values around conscious design. Perfect for upholstery and soft goods, they offer the same tactile comfort as traditional leather, but with a story of innovation and responsibility woven in.

Why Texture is Key in 2026 Interiors

In a world increasingly dominated by screens, technology, and digital spaces, texture offers a much-needed tactile break. The soft touch materials trend is part of a broader movement towards creating spaces that feel more authentic, emotional, and comforting. In 2026, texture is not just about aesthetics—it’s about building emotional connections with our environment. Soft, tactile materials are not only physically comforting, but they also create environments that evoke calm and warmth—a perfect antidote to the high-energy, fast-paced world outside.

This sensory design trend connects with a growing awareness of the need to engage multiple senses in a meaningful way. The shift from purely visual design to multisensory spaces allows us to experience design on a deeper, more holistic level, creating rooms that resonate with both the eyes and the hands, and ultimately, the soul.
