The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) has identified 44 emerging innovations\u2014including edible insects, 3D-printed foods and controlled-environment agriculture\u2014that could reshape food production and safety in the coming decades. Proactive regulation and cross-sector collaboration will, however, be essential to ensure these innovations support both public health and environmental goals.<\/em><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>By 2050, the global population is expected to reach nearly 10 billion. Feeding this growing population while reducing carbon emissions and protecting public health is one of the greatest challenges of our time. To meet this demand sustainably, agrifood systems must transform \u2013 becoming more resilient, inclusive and environmentally sound.<\/p>\n<p>In response, new food sources and production systems are emerging worldwide. These innovations have the potential to reshape what we eat and how we produce food over the next 25 years. As part of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/food-safety\/scientific-advice\/foresight\/en\/\">Food Safety Foresight Programme<\/a>, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) conducted a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.fao.org\/handle\/20.500.14283\/cd4981en\">foresight exercise<\/a>\u00a0to explore potential food safety implications of these developments. Through expert consultations and foresight methods, the exercise identified\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.fao.org\/handle\/20.500.14283\/cd5116en\">44 emerging innovations<\/a>\u00a0across nine clusters expected to impact the global agrifood system by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>Coinciding with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/fao-who-codexalimentarius\/world-food-safety-day\/wfsd-homepage\/\">World Food Safety Day<\/a> on 7 June and the theme \u201cFood safety: science in action\u201d, we highlight just some of these innovations and outline how stakeholders can prepare for a safer, more sustainable food future.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"685\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/farmingfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Emerging-food-innovations-685x675.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/farmingfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Emerging-food-innovations-685x675.png 685w, https:\/\/farmingfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Emerging-food-innovations-343x338.png 343w, https:\/\/farmingfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Emerging-food-innovations-768x757.png 768w, https:\/\/farmingfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Emerging-food-innovations-1536x1514.png 1536w, https:\/\/farmingfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Emerging-food-innovations.png 1610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 685px) 100vw, 685px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Forty-four emerging food innovations by 2050 \u00a9 FAO<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Unlocking new food sources\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>New food sources include ingredients not yet widely consumed globally \u2013 either due to regional limitations or recent technological breakthroughs. These include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alternative fats and oils: For example, tucum\u00e3 (<em>Astrocaryum aculeatum<\/em>), a palm fruit native to the Amazon, is rich in oil and bioactive compounds with potential health benefits.<\/li>\n<li>Underutilised crops: Often overlooked in global agriculture, crops like finger millet, jojoba and teff offer nutritional and climate-resilient benefits.<\/li>\n<li>Edible insects: While not new in many cultures and regions of the world, the global uptake of edible insects is growing as a source of high-quality protein and micronutrients with a low environmental footprint.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1013\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/farmingfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/UF13JY3-00165889-1013x675.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/farmingfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/UF13JY3-00165889-1013x675.jpg 1013w, https:\/\/farmingfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/UF13JY3-00165889-507x338.jpg 507w, https:\/\/farmingfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/UF13JY3-00165889-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/farmingfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/UF13JY3-00165889-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/farmingfirst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/UF13JY3-00165889-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1013px) 100vw, 1013px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>A man holds grains of teff in a market in Addis Ababa. \u00a9 FAO\/Eduardo Soteras<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Revolutionising food production\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Innovative technologies are transforming how food is produced, offering scalable, sustainable alternatives:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fermentation technologies: Biomass, gas and precision fermentation represent innovative fermentation techniques expected to scale up in the coming years. For example, biomass fermentation uses microorganisms to produce protein-rich foods.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>3D food printing: Using \u201cfood inks,\u201d this technology can replicate complex textures that closely mimic complex food products, such as meat. Several plant-based alternatives to meat and seafood are already nearing market readiness.<\/li>\n<li>Controlled-environment agriculture: Approaches like indoor farming can enable crop production in fully managed indoor spaces in diverse locations, reducing dependency on external weather conditions or seasonal changes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Science in action: Steps toward safer food systems<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>These emerging innovations bring both opportunities and challenges for agrifood systems and <a href=\"https:\/\/farmingfirst.org\/2017\/08\/priorities-for-food-safety-in-emerging-economies\/\">food safety<\/a>. Food safety authorities and stakeholders can take proactive steps to ensure the safe development and implementation of the innovations while protecting public health:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improve communication about new food sources and production systems and related issues.<\/li>\n<li>Foster technical advancement for food safety assurance.<\/li>\n<li>Optimise tailored food safety assessments.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage collaboration between regulators and the food industry.<\/li>\n<li>Harmonise regulatory requirements and food safety standards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>FAO\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/food-safety\/scientific-advice\/foresight\/\">food safety foresight<\/a> work also emphasises the importance of addressing broader\u00a0social, economic, environmental and political factors. Ongoing monitoring and research will be essential to navigate the long-term implications of these innovations.<\/p>\n<p>As we look toward 2050, some of these solutions may contribute to feeding the world more sustainably.
