Wedding planning is incredibly stressful<\/a>. There\u2019s the expense, the (surprisingly political) guest list, the weather \u2013 to name just three stressors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

And that\u2019s without the added complication of a difficult family dynamic. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sometimes, as Redditor u\/ThrowRAsisterswed<\/a> shows, the tensions can build so high that the couple don\u2019t even want to invite their own parents to the big day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Writing to r\/AITAH<\/a> (Am I The Asshole Here), the site user asked: \u201cAITAH for telling my parents they were deserve to be kicked out of my sisters wedding?\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

So, we asked relationship therapist and author at Passionerad<\/a>, Sofie Roos, about how to decide whether you should cut your relatives out of the celebration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The bride-to-be\u2019s brother is the \u201cgolden child\u201d <\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

The original poster (OP), who is the bride\u2019s sister, says their parents have always given their son more leeway than the rest of their children.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cHe has been babied to the point of uselessness by our mum and dad, and that\u2019s made him an entitled slob,\u201d she wrote, adding: \u201che could do wrong in my parents\u2019 eyes.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The brother has always performed \u201cpranks\u201d on his sister, \u201cKelly,\u201d who is soon to be married. These included pulling her dress up at a family wedding. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As an adult, Kelly has distanced herself from her family. But at her recent engagement party, her sister said she brought the family back together again. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

At this event, the brother tried to \u201cprank\u201d Kelly again by pouring water all over her. He was stopped by Kelly\u2019s fianc\u00e9, who was so annoyed by the brother\u2019s behaviour that he banned him from their wedding. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

When their parents tried to justify their adult son\u2019s actions, Kelly and her fianc\u00e9 decided to ban them from the wedding, too.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Her sister told their parents she was right to do so, asking: \u201cAITAH for telling my parents that they sucked a parents and deserved to be kicked out of my sisters wedding?\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Roos tells us that though you might feel guilty about enforcing them, boundaries are \u201cnot a punishment towards others, but a protection for your own well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Those can sometimes include cutting your parents out of your wedding. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Still, she admits it\u2019s a \u201cloaded\u201d topic, and has suggested some questions to ask yourself when considering which course of action to take. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Have your parents consistently ignored or diminished your boundaries, for instance?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

If so, Roos says, \u201cthat\u2019s a sign that setting a big boundary such as not inviting them to your wedding might be necessary to fully relax, be yourself and have a great time at your own wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Secondly, how do you feel when you spend time with your parents? Feeling tense or stressed about their presence is a red flag, she warns. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Lastly, \u201cask yourself what your wedding day would feel like without them \u2013 would it be easier to have a great day due to not needing to worry about criticism, drama, sneaky comments, or guilt?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

If you are feeling relieved of the thought of them not coming… then that\u2019s a strong indicator\u201d you shouldn\u2019t invite them, the therapist ends.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
