Artists are selected by ACF staff (including I CARE IF YOU LISTEN and innova Recordings).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jessiecoxmusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jessie Cox<\/a> is Assistant Professor of Music at Harvard University and a scholar of experimental music as well as a composer and drummer who reimagines the world through music. His first monograph <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukeupress.edu\/sounds-of-black-switzerland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">S<em>ounds of Black Switzerland: Blackness, Music, and Unthought Voices<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Duke UP, 2025) addresses how thinking with blackness and experimental musical practices might afford the opening of new discourses, such as thematizing Black Swiss Life.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ListN Up - Jessie Cox\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q2EzfMT2LII?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><em>Music is, for me, a way to re-imagine and change the world, and this playlist presents pieces that are exemplary of this kind of musical practice. I start and end with two artists who made me come to think music as this kind of force: I start with Charles Uzor, about whose work I have written in my recent book\u00a0Sounds of Black Switzerland, and end with Afrofuturist pioneer Marshall Allen. Throughout we find unique ways in which musicians ask us, the listeners, to take this task to heart and create a better world through music.<\/em><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mothertongue-no-3-fire-mimicri-by-charles-uzor-performed-by-isabel-pfefferkorn-and-ensemble-mothertongue-with-rupert-huber\"><em>Mothertongue<\/em>, No. 3: \u201cFire\/Mimicri\u201d by Charles Uzor, Performed by Isabel Pfefferkorn and Ensemble Mothertongue with Rupert Huber<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uzor.ch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Charles Uzor\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0<em>Mothertongue<\/em>\u00a0album was a special find for me. Particularly, the works\u00a0<em>Mothertongue<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>8\u201946\u201d George Floyd in Memoriam<\/em>\u00a0keep being on my mind and in my inner musical ear. They present us with questions of migration, belonging, home, existence, and more, raised very critically, and at the same time opening unthought possibilities, all through music.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mothertongue: No. 3, Fire\/Mimicri\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HDwnQ9fr75M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-high-wave-by-susie-ibarra-and-the-dreamtime-ensemble\"><em>High Wave<\/em> by Susie Ibarra and the Dreamtime Ensemble<\/h5>\n<p>Thinking about sound and space is uniquely approached in recent Pulitzer Prize winner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.susieibarra.com\/\">Susie Ibarra\u2019s<\/a> fascinating album\u00a0<em>Walking on Water<\/em>, which is accompanied by one of my favorite books\u2014<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.susieibarra.com\/product-page\/rhythm-in-nature-an-ecology-of-rhythm-digital-download\">Rhythm in Nature<\/a><\/em>. What I love about it is how field recording is not an apparently neutral background, but rather becomes a question of how we carefully musick with nature.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3969161562\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=ff5599\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=3034150761\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/susieibarra.bandcamp.com\/album\/walking-on-water\">Walking On Water by Susie Ibarra<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wind-music-by-peyton-pleninger\"><em>Wind Music<\/em> by Peyton Pleninger<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peytonpleninger.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peyton Pleninger\u2019s<\/a> <em>Wind Music<\/em> continues this trajectory\u2014it is a work that presents a saxophone sound forged in a personal relation with nature. It was made after \u201cdaily practice of improvising at the beach, listening to the sound of the wind, the rhythm of the waves.\u201d The work presents Pleninger\u2019s unique approach to the saxophone, rhythm, melodic figures, improvisation, and more.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2554583085\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=ff5599\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=1600221488\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ppleninger.bandcamp.com\/album\/wind-music\">Wind Music by Peyton Pleninger<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-palmas-by-matuk\"><em>Palmas<\/em> by Mat\u00fck<\/h5>\n<p>Mat\u00fck\u2019s\u00a0<em>Palmas<\/em>\u00a0takes us onto the dancefloor as a critical sonic listening space. <a href=\"https:\/\/matuk.bandcamp.com\/\">Mat\u00fck\u2019s<\/a> use of samples and Afro-Latin rhythms presents an imaginative sonic refiguring of the roles of digital and Indigenous technologies of sound.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2483421471\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=ff5599\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=886720078\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/matuk.bandcamp.com\/album\/palmas\">Palmas by Mat\u00fck<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-antropofagia-for-electric-guitar-and-ensemble-by-arthur-kampela-performed-by-contemporary-insights\"><em>Antropofagia for Electric Guitar and Ensemble<\/em> by Arthur Kampela, Performed by Contemporary Insights<\/h5>\n<p>Arthur Kampela\u2019s\u00a0<em>Antropofagia<\/em>\u00a0reimagines musical instruments, the musicking ensemble, and the performer\u2019s bodies, all in sound. The challenge to our sensorium, as listeners and performers, is to remain open to ways of inhabiting our own bodies\/place in unthought ways. The liminal sounds of our bodies movement in space as heard and felt through our clothing becomes a radical possibility for cosmic dream-worlding.
