He uses them in unexpected ways and views their problems from surprisingly different angles, always glossed with self-deprecating humor and perceptive observation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 Vd6JC xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-il2rc2272\"><span class=\"-gksU Vd6JC\"><span>Although comparable, <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>On Rainy Lake<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0is also quite different from <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Stargazer<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color:#FFFFFF;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>*<\/span><\/span><span>, Bates\u2019s previous short fiction collection. Stories are still character-driven, but there is a deeper emotional complexity and self-reflection in those within <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>On Rainy Lake<\/span><\/em><span>, which, on occasion, palpably sting with the bitter tang of regret or guilt, or both. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 Vd6JC xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-fofv92280\"><span class=\"-gksU Vd6JC\"><span>In several of the tales, the weight of human experience is brought to bear and confronted in a single, defining moment or meeting where a bond is formed, not always positively. Bates weaves weighty themes through these events with dexterity and ease, in addition to the character\u2019s backstory or introspection.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 Vd6JC xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-io15h2282\"><span class=\"-gksU Vd6JC\"><span>The opener, <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Moonshine<\/span><\/em><span>, was my favorite. A skillfully wrought and nicely enticing tale with an intense appeal to visualization. Voiced with earnest authenticity by Ron, an immensely likable, self-aware chap who navigates life-changing incidents with warm, folksy acceptance but also an eye to the main chance.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 Vd6JC xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-cds8l2286\"><span class=\"-gksU Vd6JC\"><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Fruitaholic<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0begins as a lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek, metaphorical exploration of addiction. However, the initial levity evolves into a searingly uncomfortable narrative. It&#8217;s excruciatingly good reading, balanced with a heavy dose of black humor.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 Vd6JC xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-u7qb92289\"><span class=\"-gksU Vd6JC\"><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Too Quick to Judge<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0starts simply, but the reader is soon made aware that, sub-textually, there is a welter of emotional baggage within fifty-three-year-old Larry, which a chance encounter with laidback, otherworldly Josh causes him to unravel, literally and figuratively. \u00a0The serendipitous power of incidental meetings is also central to <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Fight,<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0and the nuanced importance of longer-term male friendship is examined with poignancy in <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>What Gene Told Me<\/span><\/em><span>, a clever and amusing tale with a kick of a twist.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 Vd6JC xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-zht452296\"><span class=\"-gksU Vd6JC\"><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Why I Don\u2019t Run Away Anymore <\/span><\/em><span>is an unnerving piece, although the setting and familial background are familiar, the crux of the narrative is unlike any other in the book. Voiced by twelve-year-old, Quinn, it\u2019s horribly credible, loaded with dramatic irony and foreshadowing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 Vd6JC xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-mib2v2299\"><span class=\"-gksU Vd6JC\"><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Rodent<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0is another strong offering, dialogue-rich and driven by the compelling Johnny, as seen through the eyes of his sister\u2019s boyfriend, Kyle, a technique Bates also employs in <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Moonshine<\/span><\/em><span>. Johnny is charismatic, but possibly unreliable, and Bates toys nicely with his unpredictability.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 Vd6JC xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-1h2yg2304\"><span class=\"-gksU Vd6JC\"><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Lucie Line Trail<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0is a touch obvious. Yet, Bates takes such consideration in depicting Mike and his circumstances, not to mention the rural topography, that the story becomes heartwarmingly satisfying. It\u2019s one of two written in the third person, the other being <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Cribbage Game,<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0an angry, unsettling, and involving piece that prompts the reader to ponder the dilemma presented to the main character, Tim.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 Vd6JC xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-qd8i02309\"><span class=\"-gksU Vd6JC\"><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>Arnold and Tillie <\/span><\/em><span>was personally the weakest, although a sharply touching contemplation on someone trying to find usefulness and purpose in a world that has long left them behind, it lacked energy, which, nonetheless, complemented the subject matter.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 Vd6JC xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-l6mq22312\"><span class=\"-gksU Vd6JC\"><span>The concluding, titular story, <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>On Rainy Lake<\/span><\/em><span>, is a <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>tour de force<\/span><\/em><span>.\u00a0 A blistering portrait of a toxic, defunct marriage and the effect a ferocious storm has upon the warring spouses. Part-metaphorical, it\u2019s an emotionally layered, action-packed story that keeps the reader guessing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 Vd6JC xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-tzrfg2318\"><span class=\"-gksU Vd6JC\"><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>On Rainy Lake and Other Stories<\/span><\/em><span>\u00a0is a rich and fulfilling collection that delves deep into the human condition, voiced by distinctive characters and set against a beautifully rendered rural landscape.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 Vd6JC xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-ow91s2479\"><span class=\"-gksU Vd6JC\"><span style=\"color:#FFFFFF;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>*<\/span><\/span><span>Click <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.roseauburn.com\/post\/the-stargazer-and-other-stories\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"deu2Z W-gRs\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>here<\/span><\/u><\/a><span>\u00a0for my review of <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>The Stargazer and Other Stories<\/span><\/em><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bates\u2019s On Rainy Lake\u00a0is a collection of eleven short stories mainly set in and around the Hennepin County and Orchard Lake areas of Minnesota.
