Does anything separate rural and urban communities more than the use of animals for food? While rural inhabitants often live close to farms and hunted wildlife and accept the practice, urban dwellers can cringe at images of the \u201cprocessing\u201d of the very food they eat.<\/p>\n

The mechanism and faster lines at slaughterhouses complicate the issue: Every week the Food Safety and Inspection Service, FSIS (part of the United States Department of Agriculture, USDA) reports events like these last week<\/span><\/a> at the\u00a0Puro Alentejano Iberian\u00a0slaughterhouse in\u00a0Salem, NJ.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt<\/span><\/span>\u00a0approximately 1127 hour<\/span><\/span>s,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0inspection program personnel\u00a0<\/span><\/span>(<\/span><\/span>IPP<\/span><\/span>)<\/span><\/span>\u00a0observed a large b<\/span><\/span>ull<\/span><\/span>\u00a0being stunned ineffectively with a captive bolt<\/span><\/span>\u2026The bull<\/span><\/span>\u00a0bellowed loudly<\/span><\/span>\u2026<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>A<\/span><\/span>\u00a0second shot<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>was applied to the front of the bull\u2019s head<\/span><\/span>\u2026<\/span><\/span>The bull vocalized loudly and began\u00a0<\/span><\/span>b<\/span><\/span>reathing deep, heavy breaths<\/span><\/span>\u2026<\/span><\/span>The employee applied a third st<\/span><\/span>un<\/span><\/span>\u2026<\/span><\/span>to the front of the bull\u2019s head at approximately 1134 hours<\/span><\/span>. T<\/span><\/span>he bull again vocalized<\/span><\/span>\u2026<\/span><\/span>\u00a0IPP asked<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>an establishment employee to touch the bull\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/span>eye<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0bull was observed responding to the touch to its eye by blinking<\/span><\/span>\u2026<\/span><\/span>An establishment employee then began<\/span><\/span>\u00a0again to cut the neck of the bull.<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

This month, residents near Illinois\u2019 northern community of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Woodstock <\/span><\/span>are demonstrating against a planned,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>107-acre slaughtering facility adjacent to Wonder Lake and reportedly 800 feet from area homes and less than a mile from Greenwood Elementary School.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am concerned about the possible contamination of Nippersink Creek,\u201d as well as Wonder Lake and the Glacial Park Conservation Area,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0said\u00a0Kelly Liebmann, a\u00a0Greenwood Township trustee\u00a0not\u00a0speaking\u00a0in an official capacity.\u00a0Village President Dan Dycus\u00a0also raised concerns about\u00a0sound and smell pollution.<\/p>\n

\u201cSunberry Farm has been working with the McHenry County Department of Health on its septic and waste planning,\u201d<\/em> according to officials quoted in\u00a0the\u00a0Shaw<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Local News Network.<\/p>\n

Chicken and turkeys from a farm near Harvard, Illinois, are the animals to be slaughtered on the 20-by-30-foot killing floor with cows and pigs slated in the possible future.<\/p>\n

Mary Bishop, a local\u00a0veterinarian,\u00a0contends<\/span><\/a> that odor\u00a0from deceased animals\u00a0will be a problem.<\/p>\n

Illinois Governor<\/span>\u00a0JB Pritzker<\/span>\u00a0Support<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0Other Slaughterhouses<\/span><\/h2>\n

While\u00a0Illinois Governor JB Pritzker\u00a0has not\u00a0weighed in on\u00a0the proposed Wonder Lake slaughterhouse, earlier this year he\u00a0cheer led\u00a0a\u00a0slaughterhouse<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0Village of\u00a0Dieterich, in downstate\u00a0Effingham County.<\/p>\n

Frichtl Processing and Slaughtering, LLC\u2019s new\u00a09,227-square-foot\u00a0facility\u00a0brings\u00a0\u201ca state-of-the-art\u00a0facility that will create jobs, strengthen the local economy, and support Illinois agriculture,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Village of Dieterich is\u00a0thrilled<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to be chosen as the location of the new Frichtl\u2019s Processing and Slaughtering,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0said Village of Dieterich President, Brad Hardiek. \u201cThere is currently nowhere in Dieterich to purchase fresh meats.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The slaughterhouse will\u00a0create<\/span><\/a>\u00a0six jobs.<\/p>\n

The gory and macabre world that Upton Sinclair portrayed in his\u00a01906\u00a0slaughterhouse expose The Jungle continues to appall.\u00a0A recent\u00a0Animal\u00a0Outlook<\/span><\/a> investigation at the Manning Beef slaughter facility in California revealed cows butchered despite showing signs of consciousness, electric prodding of a dairy cow that could not walk and captive bolt failures like those recently cited by FSIS at the Puro Alentejano Iberian slaughterhouse.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe images our investigations team captures are heartbreaking to watch, and the truth is that cruelty like this is happening every day,\u201d<\/em> says the animal welfare group.<\/p>\n

Industry groups admit that suffering occurs. \u201cTail manipulation, including lifting and twisting, is one of the common handling methods used to prompt forward cattle movement or to get dairy cows to stand still depending on circumstances,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0says<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Dairy Global. \u201cHowever, improper twisting with excessive force results in dislocation of the intervertebral joints, tears to the caudal fascia, damage to the intervertebral connections, tail deviation, and subsequent swelling.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

In addition to plant-based beef, chicken, pork etc. \u2013 there is another culinary option that omits the slaughterhouse: Cultured or cultivated meat is grown from animal muscle cells without slaughter and environmental pollution such as feed lots and concentrated animal feeding operations. It has the nutrition and flavor of real meat because it is real meat \u2013 but ranchers and \u201cBig Meat<\/a>\u201d agitate to make such meat illegal. \u00a0Why?
