you\u2019re visiting an art fair or antiques show, you will see a small red dot placed on the label of a work being offered.\u00a0 That dot means that the work has already been sold and thus is no longer for sale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s funny how a tiny red sticker can arouse longing in the human heart.\u00a0 There is something about forbidden fruit that tempts us.\u00a0 I guarantee that if you hold an exhibition of paintings, all by the same artist, all the same size, and all of the same subject, and put a red dot next to one of them, visitors to your show will point to the painting with the dot and exclaim, \u201cOh, THAT\u2019S the one I would have bought!\u00a0 Do you have any others just like this?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dealers can play upon this yearning for the unobtainable.\u00a0 Long ago I knew a dealer down South who would invite a wealthy collector to his home for a formal dinner.\u00a0 During the course of the evening, the dealer would give the collector a tour of his private collection.\u00a0 There would always be a spectacular painting in the place of honor above the fireplace.\u00a0 Let\u2019s say it was a Mary Cassatt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the guest exclaimed about what a lovely Cassatt it was, the dealer would agree, \u201cYes, I\u2019ve never seen a better one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat would you take for it?\u201d the guest would demand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOh, Bill,\u201d the dealer would demur, \u201cThat\u2019s not for sale!\u00a0 It\u2019s in my personal collection,\u201d lingering lovingly on the word \u201cpersonal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut what would you take?\u201d the guest would pursue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBill,\u201d the dealer would protest, \u201cI can\u2019t sell it!\u00a0 That\u2019s Janie\u2019s favorite painting!\u00a0 She\u2019d skin me alive if I sold it!\u00a0 Look, I\u2019ve got another Cassatt at the gallery.\u00a0 It\u2019s almost as good.\u00a0 I\u2019ll sell you that one for my brother-in-law price.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The guest would reject the proposal, and the conversation would continue, the dealer\u2019s seeming reluctance gradually weakening, until he would finally sigh, \u201cWell, if I\u2019m going to be sleeping on the couch for the next month, you\u2019re going to have to make it worth my while.\u201d\u00a0 A very healthy retail sale would follow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We want what we can\u2019t have, but we don\u2019t want things that have been passed over.\u00a0 At art exhibitions, in addition to red dots, you will sometimes see a green dot or half a red dot next to a painting.\u00a0 Those dots mean that the work is on hold.\u00a0 Another collector will sometimes put a secondary hold on the work, requesting to be contacted if the person who placed the hold doesn\u2019t purchase the work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in the days when I did art fairs, I always hated putting a hold on a work.\u00a0 The painting hung there, unsellable, for the remainder of the show, and quite often after the show closed and I contacted the person placing the hold, he would say that he had decided to pass.\u00a0 If I had a secondary hold on the work, I knew that I had an uphill battle when I called that person.\u00a0 While speaking to him on the phone, I could almost hear him thinking, \u201cWhy didn\u2019t the first guy buy the painting?\u00a0 What\u2019s wrong with it?\u201d\u00a0 More often than not, he would pass as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When people asked me to put a hold on a work of art, I learned to tell them that I would put an \u201cinvisible\u201d red dot on the work for 15 minutes to give them time to walk around the show and decide whether they really liked the piece and could afford it.\u00a0 After that quarter hour, I told them, the work was available for purchase by anyone.\u00a0 If it remained unsold at the show\u2019s close, I would contact them and we could discuss a sale, but I wasn\u2019t going to take the work off the market now for the uncertain prospect of a future sale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you like a painting and you\u2019re a bird in the hand, so to speak, you\u2019d better declare it right then.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Often (though not nearly as often as
