Some places will make you pay for it, legally or worse and while this type of thing needs to be defied with all our might, losing your life over it doesn&#8217;t help anyone.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"auto\" aria-level=\"1\" class=\"q1Z-x\" style=\"text-align:AUTO;margin-inline-start:1.5em;list-style-type:disc\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 od2cv xm74Y\" dir=\"\" id=\"viewer-j12cv92\"><span class=\"-gksU\"><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span>Financial Dependence<\/span><\/strong><span>: If your survival hinges on someone else\u2019s goodwill, tread carefully. You <\/span><em style=\"font-style:italic\"><span>can<\/span><\/em><span> wait until you&#8217;re in a position where you don&#8217;t have to rely on someone else to get by. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"auto\" aria-level=\"1\" class=\"q1Z-x\" style=\"text-align:AUTO;margin-inline-start:1.5em;list-style-type:disc\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 od2cv xm74Y\" dir=\"\" id=\"viewer-sahxo5048\"><span class=\"-gksU\"><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span>Homelessness<\/span><\/strong><span>: The streets aren\u2019t kind, and neither is being tossed into them. Just as many LGBTQ community members find themselves discarded and homeless once they let their family know who they are, atheists can face those very same consequences. It&#8217;s important to make sure you are safe and have shelter independent of your current living situation if you think you might be evicted for being an atheist. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"auto\" aria-level=\"1\" class=\"q1Z-x\" style=\"text-align:AUTO;margin-inline-start:1.5em;list-style-type:disc\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 od2cv xm74Y\" dir=\"\" id=\"viewer-c656l100\"><span class=\"-gksU\"><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span>Career Consequences<\/span><\/strong><span>: If your paycheck comes with a prayer clause, the risk might outweigh the reward. It might be a better idea to find employment elsewhere first, before you reveal the fact that you think god is fictitious. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"auto\" aria-level=\"1\" class=\"q1Z-x\" style=\"text-align:AUTO;margin-inline-start:1.5em;list-style-type:disc\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 od2cv xm74Y\" dir=\"\" id=\"viewer-ze7xe104\"><span class=\"-gksU\"><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span>Relationships<\/span><\/strong><span>: Families and friendships can shatter under the weight of ideology. Be ready for fallout if you take this step. It&#8217;s not fair, and we shouldn&#8217;t have to worry about this, but it&#8217;s the world we live in. Prepare yourself for these losses and please know that there is an entire community of atheists out there who see you and respect you for who you are. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"auto\" aria-level=\"1\" class=\"q1Z-x\" style=\"text-align:AUTO;margin-inline-start:1.5em;list-style-type:disc\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 od2cv xm74Y\" dir=\"\" id=\"viewer-r7p7v108\"><span class=\"-gksU\"><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span>Social Exile<\/span><\/strong><span>: In some communities, this isn\u2019t just a conversation starter, it\u2019s a door closer. Many people who have come out as an atheist have been forced to flee their hometowns or endure constant estrangement from everyone in their community. Get online and find those of us out here who support you. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li dir=\"auto\" aria-level=\"1\" class=\"q1Z-x\" style=\"text-align:AUTO;margin-inline-start:1.5em;list-style-type:disc\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 od2cv xm74Y\" dir=\"\" id=\"viewer-dh49r112\"><span class=\"-gksU\"><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span>Timing<\/span><\/strong><span>: Not every hill is the right one to die on. Sometimes, waiting is the most strategic move you can make.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"h8yAD ISvF4 od2cv xm74Y\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-fyukw117\"><span class=\"-gksU\"><span>Bottom line? Coming out as an atheist isn\u2019t a Disney moment with a swell of violins and a triumphant hug. It\u2019s more like ordering fugu at a sketchy back-alley sushi joint. You better know the risks, and you better be damn sure it\u2019s worth it. Sometimes the smartest move is keeping your mouth shut and your head down.
