So, let\u2019s step back and look at the PayPal policy first.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PayPal Policy<\/h2>\n<p>I contacted PayPal directly, speaking to Claudia from their<br \/>\nPress Office, asking for advice and what message they would like to send to any<br \/>\nbrands wanting to sell CBD. They sent the following response:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>As reflected in our Acceptable Use Policy, PayPal currently does not<br \/>\npermit the use of our payments platform for the sale of products containing<br \/>\nCannabidiol (CBD)\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But I had an issue with this. You see, if you were to go<br \/>\nonto Holland &amp; Barrett, Boots or Lloyds Pharmacy, you will find you can<br \/>\npurchase CBD oil using PayPal. It would appear one set of rules is being applied<br \/>\nto them which doesn\u2019t meet their Acceptable Use Policy. I enquired about this<br \/>\nmatter, but the response I got was:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPayPal has no further comment to add on this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It would appear this isn\u2019t the first time they have been asked this and the solution is to ignore the question, quite frustratingly.<\/p>\n<p>It should also be stated, to those saying this is unfair,<br \/>\nthat PayPal isn\u2019t a regulated bank and actually have every right to do this<br \/>\n(even if we all find it very frustrating). In their actual policies, it states<br \/>\nthat they can freeze your funds for up to 180 days if they feel you are<br \/>\nbreaking their acceptable use policy, meaning any money you have in the account<br \/>\ncould be held for an extensive period of time, which could be devastating to<br \/>\nmany brands cashflow situations.<\/p>\n<p>They have highlighted that any business selling CBD should verify with PayPal, but let\u2019s be clear, your account will most likely be banned.<\/p>\n<p>So what about other payment gateways that you could use?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stripe<\/h2>\n<p>This is unfortunately another roadblock, as Stripe have<br \/>\nstated the following:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe aren\u2019t able to support businesses selling CBD products<br \/>\nat this time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>While some brands allow other forms of hemp products to be<br \/>\nsold, a representative from Stripe has stated \u201cwe impose a blanket ban on the<br \/>\nsale of any products related to marijuana, including hemp and CBD oil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even when asking around products that contained zero THC,<br \/>\nthe answer was a no.<\/p>\n<p>However, there was a positive note at the end. They had this<br \/>\npolicy because at the time it was set, CBD was a schedule 1 drug, whereas now<br \/>\nthey know it isn\u2019t, they will undoubtedly change the rule at some point in the<br \/>\nfuture. Without the threat of them receiving large fines, the door is ajar, we<br \/>\njust need someone to push hard enough.<\/p>\n<p>They have in November updated their terms around CBD products with \u201conly negligible amounts of THC, per local limits\u201d, meaning they\u2019re hard playing such a hard stance, providing you can demonstrate with the lab reports that there isn\u2019t any THC.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Says Yes?<\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019m sure you must be scratching your head wondering what options you have left! Well I\u2019ve listed below all the different CBD Payment Gateway options for you to consider and tried to list all of the associated costs.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Total Processing<\/h2>\n<p>They claim to have a 100% approval rate, which is relieving for many brands that work in a supposed \u2018high risk\u2019 area such as CBD. The brand has a strong reputation for working with brands within gambling and adult entertainment, as well as CBD.<\/p>\n<p>The payment gateway solution has PCI-DSS level 1 security in place, while they accept over 100 currencies in 196 countries.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Direct Pay Net<\/h2>\n<p>Launched in 2009, this company is a full merchant service solution provider, while they offer their services to CBD brands.<\/p>\n<p>They will require a history of financials, proof of company ownership, licensing for any regulated products and website compliance.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MWB Solutions<\/h2>\n<p>One great option is MWB Solutions, which has an e-commerce gateway which works with various platforms such as WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, Joomla and Drupal. They also have a PoS and credit card terminals.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to their owner Warren, they stated:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do process payments for CBD based products, as long as it contains less than 0.2% THC and the application is quite thorough.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Square<\/h2>\n<p>Since October 2019, Square has been accepting business requests for payment processing on CBD products, following an announcement at a conference. They do state that there is a very strict level of due diligence taken on the companies that are selling, but that they are relaxing their rules, charging CBD sellers 3.9% in the US and an extra 10 cents per transaction for swipe, tap and dip payments.<\/p>\n<p>They now have a section on their site, claiming you just sign-up and should be approved within 2-3 business days. The fees are aroun d 3.5-4.4%. You may have a payment limit being in the CBD industry initially, but this can be monitored and changed over time.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LumiPay<\/h2>\n<p>Lumi-Pay offer a one-click solution, integrating with the main content management systems such as WordPress, Shopify, Magento and Joomla.
