And yet researchers from the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior have just confirmed it&#8217;s real.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/animal\/nematode\">Nematodes<\/a>\u2014a group of tiny worms that include around 20,000 known species\u2014actually form these cringe-worthy living structures in nature, even if they&#8217;re less than one inch tall.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, researchers had only observed slime molds, fire ants and spider mites naturally assemble into such structures. Nematodes formed towers in labs, but scientists didn&#8217;t know why. Did they exhibit this behavior in nature? It became a burning question for some researchers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just something that always bugged me. I mean, yes, we\u2019re studying nematode collective behavior in the tower context and other contexts, but is it real?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.serenadinglab.com\/\">Serena Ding<\/a>, a leader from the Max Planck Institute&#8217;s Genes and Behavior group, tells <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/wild-worms-build-flesh-towers-and-are-closer-than-you-think-2000611200\"><em>Gizmodo<\/em><\/a>&#8216;s Ed Cara. \u201cSo when I started my research program four years ago, I really dedicated a push towards just actually finding nematodes at a high density and high numbers doing this stuff out there. And then we were successful.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"video\">\n<div class=\"embedly-plugin\" data-type=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-image\">\n<p>Behold, a living tower of worms<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/F8QVcrjqrNI\/maxresdefault.jpg\" data-video-id=\"F8QVcrjqrNI\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>  <iframe width=\"854\" src=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"player\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay\"><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Ding and her colleagues captured video footage of the nematode towers in fallen apples and pears in orchards in Konstanz, Germany. They describe their discovery in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/current-biology\/fulltext\/S0960-9822(25)00601-3?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS0960982225006013%3Fshowall%3Dtrue\">study<\/a> published Thursday in the journal <em>Current Biology<\/em>, revealing the first direct evidence that nematodes create towers in nature as a means of collective transportation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you think about it, an animal that is 1 millimeter long [0.039 inches] cannot just crawl all the way to the next fruit 2 meters (6.6 feet) away. It could easily die on the way there, or be eaten by a predator,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/daniela-perez-bio.squarespace.com\/\">Daniela Perez<\/a>, the study\u2019s first author and postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, tells\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/05\/science\/nematode-stacking-worms-living-towers\">CNN<\/a>&#8216;s Kameryn Griesser. \u201cWe saw that they are very reactive to the presence of a stimulus,\u201d she adds, describing the nematodes in the towers. \u201cThey sense it, and then the tower goes towards this stimulus, attaching itself to our metal pick or a fly buzzing around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Either the entire tower, or part of it, then gets carried away. While researchers already knew that individual nematode worms could catch a ride by grabbing on to passersby, the study is the first to demonstrate that towers serve a similar hitchhiking capacity. \u201cThat\u2019s the presumed function that we could confirm,\u201d Ding tells <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2482950-worms-team-up-to-form-tentacles-when-they-want-to-go-places\/\"><em>New Scientist<\/em><\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0Michael Le Page.<\/p>\n<p>The team brought some of the natural towers into the lab, where they discovered that the coordinated structures consisted of a single nematode species, all of which were at a larval stage called &#8220;dauer.\u201d They also watched lab-grown <em>Caenorhabditis elegans<\/em> nematode clones from all life stages build towers in two hours. However, \u201c<em>C. elegans<\/em> is a clonal culture and so it makes sense that there is no differentiation within the tower. In natural towers, we might see separate genetic compositions and roles, which prompts fascinating questions about who cooperates and who cheats,&#8221; Perez explains in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, \u201cDiscovering [this behavior] in wild populations is really important as it shows this is a part of how these animals live and not just a lab artifact,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk\/group-leaders\/n-to-s\/william-schafer\/\">William Schafer<\/a>, a geneticist at the University of Cambridge who was not involved in the study, tells\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/3Czz0#selection-203.0-205.1\"><em>Scientific American<\/em><\/a>&#8216;s Jacek Krywko.<\/p>\n<p>With that creepy news comes good news.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not about to take over the world, because they already did,\u201d Ding tells <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/environment\/nematode-worm-towers\/\"><em>Popular Science<\/em><\/a>&#8216;s Lauren Leffer.
