Grim news from Experian<\/a>: in 2024, the company found that attending a wedding cost guests about \u00a3450 each, or an average of almost a fifth of their monthly income. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

And given that Monzo says<\/a> one-tenth of us went to eight weddings or more in 2023, it\u2019s easy to see how the costs stack up. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

That\u2019s just a standard guest fee too: bridesmaids and groomsmen might have to fork out for pricey hen and stag \u2019dos, while destination weddings involve multiple-night hotel stays and sometimes even flights. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

That was certainly the case for a Redditor posting to r\/TwoHotTakes<\/a>, who shared that she\u2019s considering cancelling on her friend\u2019s wedding given how expensive it\u2019s becoming. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

So, we spoke to Jo Hayes, founder of Etiquette Expert<\/a>, about how much is too much to ask of your guests financially. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The poster says the costs crept up <\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

At first, the original poster (OP) wrote<\/a>, she was excited for her friend\u2019s engagement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But then the costs crept up to the thousands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The bride-to-be is planning a week-long luxury destination hen do and, OP says, expects the guests of the bridal shower she organised to wear a particular dress that they have to pay for. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The fianc\u00e9e also specified the gifts she\u2019d like to receive at her bridal shower, which are all expensive. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The poster, meanwhile, has a wedding of her own coming up and is in the process of buying a home with her partner.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In short, she says, the event is simply outside of her means \u2013 and while some commentators said<\/a> her hopes that her friend will simply \u201cshut up\u201d about her wedding were unfair, most agree she needs to opt out of at least some of the events.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no one fixed rule that applies to all weddings\u201d <\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Hayes told us that what\u2019s enraging at one wedding might be reasonable at another. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cEvery wedding is different, with different socio-economic demographics at play,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cMy advice to couples is to simply be \u2018self-aware\u2019 and surround yourself with a small number of wise, balanced, \u2018common sense\u2019 mentors,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The etiquette expert also recommended sticking to the \u201cgolden rule\u201d: do unto others as you\u2019d have them do to you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cEven if you\u2019re on \u00a3300K a year, consider the financial pressures facing your younger cousin, who\u2019s one of your bridesmaids… a newlywed with a husband still in college, with a joint income of \u00a350K,\u201d she advised.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cAsking her to fork out thousands on a fancy hen weekend, designer bridesmaid gown, and accessories is a bit much, and most reasonable people would say, \u2018not fair.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Additionally, she said, \u201ckind, clear communication\u201d about what you expect from your guests and bridal party upfront can help them to plan for costs and allows them to share if any part of your plans are financially unviable. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

For truly close loved ones, she said, compromises ought to be reached.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
