This is especially crucial for individuals whose citizenship might be questioned due to their appearance, name, or accent.<\/p>\n<p><span>Starting <strong>May 7, 2025<\/strong>, TSA will be enforcing Real ID verification for U.S. domestic travel. If you don\u2019t have one, you\u2019re not getting past TSA! <\/span><span>I\u2019ll break down what a REAL ID is, what you need for domestic and international travel, and some smart backup options I always carry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ensuring you have the right documents in advance can prevent delays and complications during your travels.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><i>This post contains affiliate links that help me share <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">this<\/span> information for Free at no charge to you. If you don\u2019t yet have a real id, I\u2019d get one!<\/p>\n<p><strong>For International travel<\/strong>: Although a passport is all one needs as a U.S. citizens traveling internationally, I\u2019d have at least three U.S. federal identification cards\u00a0 as re-entry into the U.S. is strict. Although U.S. citizens are automatically allowed back into the U.S. , you could get pulled out by border agents <a href=\"https:\/\/grrrltraveler.com\/us-airport-security-what-you-need-to-know\/\">for further questioning and a phone search<\/a>.\u00a0 Also, with the current instability of our government changing long held policies and laws, additional documentation proving your U.S. citizenship is just handy to have!<\/p>\n<p>Listed below is the short and most common list. If you fall outside of it\u2013 for instance, <em>veterans, Canadians, tribal people, etc..<\/em> \u2013 , <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/security-screening\/identification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">check the TSA website<\/a> as these exceptions are listed.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"1_Valid_US_Passport_Book\">1. Valid U.S. Passport Book<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Your passport is the primary proof of U.S. citizenship and is required for international air travel. A passport trumps all forms of identification for domestic travel.<\/p>\n<div><span>Make sure your passport is up-to-date. Check the expiration date before your trip. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended return date, as most countries require this. Also if you are ever delayed in another country- as some travelers were during the pandemic\u2013 or <em>detained \u2014<\/em> you have leeway time for you to get your situation worked out. When dates are expired, it leaves your status open to be compromised.\u00a0 If you need to <a href=\"https:\/\/grrrltraveler.com\/us-passport-renewals\/\">renew your passport<\/a>, visit the<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/passports.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> travel.state.gov website for passport renewals<\/a>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><strong>Pro Tip:<\/strong> Keep an eye out for<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/passports\/need-passport\/card.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> a U.S. Passport card<\/a> in the future.\u00a0 This is on the backburner for me as they are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> accepted internationally, except for <em>Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Carribbean.\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"2_Real_ID_Federally-Issued_Photo_Identification\">2. Real ID (Federally-Issued Photo Identification)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Secondary forms of government identification are always useful if there is ever a question regarding citizenship. The ones which carry the most weight are:\u00a0<span style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"> <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\"><strong>Driver\u2019s License or State ID card.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\">Both are recognized forms of identification for U.S. domestic travel and is required if you want to get a U.S. passport.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<h3><span id=\"What_is_a_Real_ID\"><em>What is a Real ID?<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<div><span>A real ID is either a driver\u2019s license or state ID that meets federal security standards. <strong>It has <\/strong><\/span><span><span><strong>a star in the top right corner of your ID<\/strong>. It means more identification verification was used. <\/span><\/span><b style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\">It has nifty anti-counterfeit security features,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> making them challenging to to forge. Some of the features are <\/span><em>holograms<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, patterns that are visible under <\/span>ultraviolet (UV) light, tactile raised text<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span>barcode or QR code<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, m<\/span>agnetic stripe, ghost images<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/real-id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here is an example<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The reason Real IDs are important is that in the past, some states allow applicants to get an <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with less rigorous proof of identification. They made ID cards easier to get, perhaps because it was operational for state standards. I<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f your ID <\/span><b>does not have a star<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s not REAL ID-compliant, and you\u2019ll need another form of TSA-approved identification to fly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"What_official_documents_do_you_need_to_bring_for_your_REAL-ID\"><em>What official documents do you need to bring for your REAL-ID?<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/real-id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Visit the DHS site<\/a> <\/strong>and click on the state you reside in or <strong>check your local DMV site<\/strong>. You will need to bring the following documents to your city\u2019s drivers licensing center.<\/p>\n<p>All documents must be in<strong> <em>current legal name<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This is an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">abbreviated<\/span> list (for instance, this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www8.honolulu.gov\/csd\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/03\/Acceptable-Documents-for-a-REAL-ID-Compliant-Star-DL-SID-Print-Button-2024-03-13.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hawaii\u2019s list<\/a> but it may change by state):<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>One proof of identity<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u2022 Original or certified copy of your birth certificate. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>A copy of your birth certificate can be ordered online. Each state has a vital records office that has birth, marriage, death certificates.Some states partner with VitalCheck.com to help facilitate the process.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u2022 Or a valid U.S. passport.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>One proof of Social Security<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u2022 Social Security Card in your current legal name. ( Lost yours like me? <a href=\"https:\/\/ssv.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Visit the Social Security website<\/a> to request a copy of your card mailed to you. If you don\u2019t have an account, make one because you can also see how much your pending Social Security is!\u00a0 Unfortunately, the cards they issue have always been a flimsy paper card for Hawaii.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u2022 Or a W2 form or pay statement.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Two proofs of current physical state address<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u2022 Current valid driver license.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u2022 Current valid vehicle registration.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u2022 Valid vehicle insurance card.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u2022 Utility bill (must not be more than two months old).<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u2022 Current real property tax assessment form<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u2022 Medical card issued by a health insurance agency, with applicant\u2019s name and address <\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Proof of Name Change<\/h4>\n<p>For married women who have changed their name, it may feel like a rigorous challenge. But the first two are the easiest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><em>\u2022 Certified marriage certificates. *<\/em><\/strong><em>You can acquire a copy of your marriage license online from your\u00a0 official government website. This is where<a href=\"https:\/\/vitrec.ehawaii.gov\/vitalrecords\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Hawaii residents can get theirs<\/a>. Moving forward, this is a good investment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong><em>\u2022 Legal name change certificate.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u2022 Naturalization Certificate<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u2022 Civil Union Certificate (U.S. Government Issued)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Please <strong>check your state requirements<\/strong> as there are more documents that may qualify. Some of these documents can take time to secure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span id=\"3_DHS_Trusted_Traveler_Program_Cards\">3. DHS Trusted Traveler Program Cards<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Enrollment in <strong>Trusted Traveler programs<\/strong> like <em>Global Entry<\/em> or <em>TSA PreCheck<\/em>\u00a0can expedite security screenings.<span> Carry your membership card.\u00a0 These cards help facilitate smoother passage through TSA airport security by verifying you as a \u2018trusted traveler\u2019, so you don\u2019t need to remove shoes, open carry-ons, etc\u2026 They do <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> expedite you at U.S. Immigration however.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<h3><span id=\"4_Secondary_Proof_of_Citizenship_optional\">4. Secondary Proof of Citizenship (optional)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This tips is primarily for those who may encounter additional questioning or targeting at U.S. immigration.\u00a0 Having backup forms of proof of your U.S. citizenship is helpful<\/p>\n<p><span> \u2022<strong> Birth Certificate,\u00a0 Naturalization Certificate or Permanent Resident Green Card: <\/strong>\u00a0Carrying copies can serve as supplementary proof of U.S. citizenship, is essential when re-entering the country, especially if primary documents are lost or stolen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Pro-Tip:<\/strong> Store digital copies on your phone to have on a daily basis. These days with ICE showing up at grocery stores and schools, it\u2019s just a safety measure.<\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"5_Visa_and_Entry_Requirements\">5. Visa and Entry Requirements<\/span><\/h2>\n<div>Before traveling abroad, I <em>always<\/em> r<span><span>esearch destination requirements. Some countries require visas before arrival, visas upon arrival or have specific entry criteria. Also, <a href=\"https:\/\/grrrltraveler.com\/us-travel-bans-leaked-what-you-need-to-know\/\">the U.S. travel ban<\/a> may become official and this can change international relationships. Countries American travelers once held privilege to enter, may be changing their policies. For instance, Mexico now requires Americans to have a visa for entry and in late 2026, Americans will be required to apply for a\u00a0<a class=\"DTlJ6d\" href=\"https:\/\/travel-europe.europa.eu\/etias\/what-you-need-apply_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-hveid=\"CE8QAQ\">European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)<\/a> when traveling European nations, as well as <\/span><\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0em;\">Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein<\/span><span><span><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span>Make sure you can meet all necessary conditions before you book your flight and have your necessary visa or entry documents before departure. I <em>always<\/em> keep digital copies on my phone for quick access and it\u2019s because you never know when you\u2019ll need it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Store a digital copy on your phone.<\/strong> Digital copies have become increasingly more acceptable when I travel or ID verification at home when I do gig work. When I travel, some hotels require a passport IDs at checkin and rather than turning mine over so the receptionist can take it away to the copy machine, I found digital copies to be accepted abroad. For instance, when in <a href=\"https:\/\/grrrltraveler.com\/more-things-to-know-before-you-go-to-nepal\/\">Nepal<\/a>, I emailed a photo copy of my passport to the front desk and they were happy as they did not have to print it out but could store it in their files during my stay.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Store your ID on the Cloud:<\/strong> I use iCloud and my Google Drive as an emergency backup storage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Paper copies<\/strong> also help too. You never know what situation you may find yourself in as a traveler and this covers all angles. I make a couple of copies and store them in my daypack and luggage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Pro Tip:<\/strong> Password protect your storage spaces. If you have an iPhone, turn on your <em>Find my iPhone<\/em> location app. Not only can it help you locate your phone, but there is a feature on the website lets you lock your phone or erase its contents, if it is ever lost or stolen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span id=\"Travel_insurance\">Travel insurance<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Due to the fact the U.S. border and U.S. security has been super nit-picky, I <em>highly<\/em> <em>recommend<\/em> <a class=\"thirstylink\" title=\"World Nomads TRAVEL INSURANCE\" href=\"https:\/\/grrrltraveler.com\/recommends\/travel-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">travel insurance<\/a>. Why?
