Let\u2019s take a look at the details for these new breeds. <\/p>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_under_page_title - under_page_title --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_under_page_title - under_page_title --><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to Spay or Neuter Risks<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/veterinary-science\/articles\/10.3389\/fvets.2024.1322276\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">research <\/a>looks at the following risks of early spay or neuter in each breed of dog. <\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increased risks of joint disorders, such as hip dysplasia (HD), elbow dysplasia (ED), or cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) tear<\/li>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_under_first_paragraph - under_first_paragraph --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_under_first_paragraph - under_first_paragraph --><\/p>\n<li>Increased risks of cancers, such as lymphosarcoma (LSA), mast cell tumor (MCT), hemangiosarcoma (HSA), or osteosarcoma (OSA)<\/li>\n<li>As well as things like mammary cancer, pyometra, and urinary incontinence \u2014 in female dogs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note: \u201cJoint disorder risks are heightened for some larger breeds and for mixed-breed dogs weighing more than 20 kg.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_under_second_paragraph - under_second_paragraph --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_under_second_paragraph - under_second_paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Of course, there are risks of not spaying or neutering dogs early, namely unwanted \/ unplanned litters of puppies.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>Also, I know a lot of dog people who no longer neuter their male dogs and even some who don\u2019t spay their female dogs at all, but to me the risks are too great not to do it with females. I did, however, wait until my current female dogs were more than 1 year old to spay. In Clover\u2019s case, waiting (and other strategies from our veterinary internal medicine specialist) likely <a href=\"https:\/\/championofmyheart.com\/puppys-uti-wont-go-away\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saved her from a lifetime of suffering from constant UTIs (bladder infections).<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>That said, the risks of never spaying a female dog include the following:<\/p>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_mid_content - mid_content --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_mid_content - mid_content --><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">200+ Cases for Each Breed Over 20 Years<\/h3>\n<p>Researchers pulled data from the UC Davis veterinary hospital\u2019s records archive and found 200+ cases for each of the 5 breeds. The dogs in these cases all weighed at least 20 kg (44 pounds), and the cases spanned 2000-2020. <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Results for German Short\/Wirehaired Pointer<\/h3>\n<p>The cohort of 443 cases for German Shorthaired Pointer and German Wirehaired Pointer dogs in the study population consisted of \u2026<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>150 intact males<\/li>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_longer_content - longer_content --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_longer_content - longer_content --><\/p>\n<li>89 neutered males<\/li>\n<li>90 intact females<\/li>\n<li>114 neutered females<\/li>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_longest_content - longest_content --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_longest_content - longest_content -->\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Joint Disorders:<\/strong> The big headline is that for female dogs spayed before 6 months of age the rate was \u201chighly elevated,\u201d with 38% having at least one joint disorder. Yikes!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cancers:<\/strong> For cancer, the important points are that male dogs neutered before 6 months had significantly elevated rates of MCT and HSA, both 8%, over intact male breeds with MCT (2%) and HSA (1%). Females spayed before their first birthday had a significantly increased risk for LSA, 11%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mammary Cancer:<\/strong> None of the spayed females developed mammary cancer, but 4% of the intact females did. <\/p>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_incontent_5 - incontent_5 --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_incontent_5 - incontent_5 --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pyometra:<\/strong> None of the spayed females developed pyometra, but 4% of the intact females did. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Urinary Incontinence:<\/strong> Intact female breeds did not develop urinary incontinence, but females spayed before 1 year had an insignificant increase to 6%; male dogs had almost no cases of UI. So, yay, for the boy dogs, I guess. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When to Spay or Neuter German Short\/Wirehaired Pointers?<\/strong> \u201cGiven the increased rates of both joint disorders and cancers for both male and female dogs with early neutering, the suggested guideline is neutering no earlier than 12 months of age.\u201d<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Results for Mastiff<\/h3>\n<p>The cohort of 361 cases for Mastiffs in the study population consisted of \u2026<\/p>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_incontent_6 - incontent_6 --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_incontent_6 - incontent_6 --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>148 intact males<\/li>\n<li>61 neutered male<\/li>\n<li>70 intact females<\/li>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_incontent_7 - incontent_7 --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_incontent_7 - incontent_7 --><\/p>\n<li>82 neutered females<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Joint Disorders:<\/strong> Neutering male Mastiffs dogs before they turned 2 years old \u201cresulted in a significantly elevated risk for a joint disorder, mainly due to CCL.\u201d However, neutering male dogs before their first birthday resulted in a 21% risk of joint disorders and \u201cneutering at 1 year of age was a 15% risk.\u201d The data for spayed female Mastiffs was not statistically significant, but those spayed before 1 year had a 20% risk of a joint disorder.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cancers:<\/strong> The good news is that spaying female Mastiffs did not result in any elevated cancer risks. However, male Mastiffs \u201cneutered before 1 year had a significantly elevated risk of cancer, 28%.\u201d Yikes!<\/p>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_incontent_8 - incontent_8 --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_incontent_8 - incontent_8 --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pyometra:<\/strong> Intact female Mastiffs had a 12% rate of pyometra. <\/p>\n<p>The paper does not mention mammary cancer or urinary incontinence in the breed summary. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When to Spay or Neuter Mastiffs?<\/strong> \u201cThe guideline is to neuter male dogs no earlier than 24 months of age due to joint disorders. With female dogs, it is suggested to neuter no earlier than 12 months of age due to a non-significant elevated incidence of cranial cruciate ligament tear and also due to the large body size.\u201d<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Results for Newfoundland<\/h3>\n<p>The cohort of 212 cases for Newfoundlands in study population consisted of \u2026<\/p>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_incontent_9 - incontent_9 --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_incontent_9 - incontent_9 --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>74 intact males<\/li>\n<li>40 neutered male<\/li>\n<li>59 intact females<\/li>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_incontent_10 - incontent_10 --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_incontent_10 - incontent_10 --><\/p>\n<li>39 neutered females<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Joint Disorders:<\/strong> The breed already has high-ish rates of joint disorders, with intact males and females seeing \u201c10% and 7% rates of having at least one joint disorder, respectively.\u201d Neutered male Newfoundlands did not experience significantly elevated joint issues, but \u201cfemales\u2019 rates for having a joint disorder were significantly elevated: 39% were affected when neutered in the first year.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong>Cancers: <\/strong>\u201cThere were no cancers in intact female dogs, and only a 3% rate for intact male dogs, with no significant elevations with neutering.\u201d <!-- Ezoic - wp_incontent_11 - incontent_11 --><\/p>\n<p><!-- End Ezoic - wp_incontent_11 - incontent_11 --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Urinary Incontinence:<\/strong> Female dogs spayed before one year of age saw an 18% prevalence of urinary incontinence, but that\u2019s NOT a significant elevation compared to intact female Newfoundlands. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Pyometra &amp; Mammary Cancer:<\/strong> These diagnoses were \u201crarely recorded.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When to Spay or Neuter Newfoundlands?<\/strong> \u201cThe spaying guideline for female dogs is to neuter no earlier than 12 months of age. Despite no significant data against early neutering, it may be a cautious choice to neuter male dogs no earlier than 12 months of age due to the large body size of the breed.\u201d<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Results for Rhodesian Ridgeback<\/h3>\n<p>The cohort of 209 cases for Rhodesian Ridgebacks in the study population consisted of \u2026<\/p>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_incontent_12 - incontent_12 --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_incontent_12 - incontent_12 --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>54 intact males<\/li>\n<li>69 neutered male<\/li>\n<li>30 intact females<\/li>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_incontent_13 - incontent_13 --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_incontent_13 - incontent_13 --><\/p>\n<li>56 neutered females<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Cancers: <\/strong>\u201cIntact male and female dogs had 14% and 13% risk for at least one cancer, respectively. Neutering female dogs before 6 months provided the only significant increase in cancers, with a 25% rate of MCT compared with the 3% rate in intact female dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mammary Cancer, Pyometra, &amp; Urinary Incontinence<\/strong>: These things were \u201cwere rarely recorded in these female dogs.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_incontent_14 - incontent_14 --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_incontent_14 - incontent_14 --><\/p>\n<p>The summary for this breed does not mention joint disorders.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When to Spay or Neuter Rhodesian Ridgebacks?<\/strong> \u201cThe guideline is to neuter no earlier than 6 months for male dogs and at least that for female dogs, given their cases of MCT with early neutering.\u201d<\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Results for Siberian Husky<\/h3>\n<p>The cohort of 266 cases for Siberian Huskies in the study population consisted of \u2026<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>64 intact males<\/li>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_incontent_15 - incontent_15 --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_incontent_15 - incontent_15 --><\/p>\n<li>77 neutered male<\/li>\n<li>48 intact females<\/li>\n<li>77 neutered females<\/li>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_incontent_16 - incontent_16 --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_incontent_16 - incontent_16 -->\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Joint Disorders:<\/strong> Researchers found \u201cno significant risks\u201d in altered dogs for joint disorders over that of intact dogs. However, female Siberian Huskies spayed before they turn one year old \u201chad a 12% chance of CCL, which would perhaps be significant with a larger dataset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cancers:<\/strong> \u201cIntact male and female [Siberian Huskies] had 10% and 6% risks of at least one cancer, respectively, with no elevation associated with neutering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mammary Cancer &amp; Pyometra:<\/strong> \u201cMC and PYO in intact female dogs were both 2%, but their prevalence in female dogs neutered 2\u20138 years were 9% and 4%, respectively. However, neither of these results was significant.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><!-- Ezoic - wp_incontent_17 - incontent_17 --><!-- End Ezoic - wp_incontent_17 - incontent_17 --><\/p>\n<p>The summary for this breed does not mention urinary incontinence. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>When to Spay or Neuter Rhodesian Ridgebacks?<\/strong> \u201cThe guideline is to neuter male dogs no earlier than 6 months of age.
