{"id":277014,"date":"2025-06-06T11:18:26","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T11:18:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/uncategorized\/ai-in-medical-billing-coding-reducing-errors-burnout\/"},"modified":"2025-06-06T11:18:26","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T11:18:26","slug":"ai-in-medical-billing-coding-reducing-errors-burnout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=277014","title":{"rendered":"AI in Medical Billing &#038; Coding: Reducing Errors &#038; Burnout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>How Automation Streamlines Billing and Coding Processes<\/h2>\n<p>With medical billing and coding, timeliness and precision are of paramount importance. <a class=\"paragraphCTA\" href=\"https:\/\/healthtechmagazine.net\/article\/2023\/06\/reduce-healthcare-burnout-through-data-driven-automation\">AI can improve both<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Medical billers and coders must process claims as quickly and accurately as possible, explains Steven Carpenter, a billing and coding instructor at the <a class=\"paragraphCTA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.utsa.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of Texas at San Antonio<\/a>. \u201cIf they don\u2019t code properly, then the claim can be denied or suspended, and that in turn affects the revenue cycle and profitability,\u201d Carpenter says.<\/p>\n<p>But instead of poring through the ICD-10-CM and <a class=\"paragraphCTA\" href=\"https:\/\/healthtechmagazine.net\/article\/2024\/02\/getting-most-out-your-electronic-health-record\">medical records<\/a> to identify the right codes for each and every diagnosis, coders can use AI to swiftly and correctly identify the appropriate, up-to-date codes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cManual billing and coding can be repetitive, error-prone and mentally taxing, especially when coders must handle high volumes of data under tight deadlines,\u201d Carpenter says. \u201cAI can help improve the speed and the accuracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to recommending codes, AI tools can analyze and validate claims, automate claim submissions, verify insurance eligibility, and get <a class=\"paragraphCTA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdw.com\/content\/cdw\/en\/articles\/software\/revolutionizing-prior-authorizations-with-ai.html\" target=\"_blank\">prior authorizations<\/a> and other documents to payers \u2014 ultimately optimizing revenue cycle management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRevenue cycle management has a lot of moving parts, and on both the payer and provider side, there\u2019s a lot of opportunity for automation,\u201d says Aditya Bhasin, vice president of software design and development at <a class=\"paragraphCTA\" href=\"https:\/\/stanfordhealthcare.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stanford Health Care<\/a>. \u201cThere are huge benefits of leveraging this technology to remove friction from the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"paragraphCTA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdw.com\/content\/cdw\/en\/articles\/dataanalytics\/how-overcome-ai-implementation-hurdles-healthcare.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>EXPLORE: <\/strong>Overcome AI implementation hurdles in healthcare.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Reducing Errors and Alleviating Staff Burnout<\/h2>\n<p>Medical billing involves more than assigning the correct codes. Billing teams also must interact with patients to address continual queries about insurance coverage and medical charges. Stanford Health Care found that AI could augment the capabilities of its billing staff and, in the process, save time and avoid burnout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn healthcare, there has been a lot of focus on burnout among physicians and <a class=\"paragraphCTA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdw.com\/content\/cdw\/en\/articles\/dataanalytics\/how-ai-enhances-operations-patient-care-treatments.html\" target=\"_blank\">how AI can help clinically<\/a>, but we also noticed that our billing folks have a lot of back and forth with patients and get really complex queries from them,\u201d Bhasin says.<\/p>\n<p>Every day, Stanford Health Care\u2019s billing representatives respond to hundreds of questions from patients via the organization\u2019s online portal. In the past, the billing reps responded to these written queries by consulting 25 templates, selecting the most appropriate one, and then personalizing it to respond to each patient query.<\/p>\n<p>Recognizing that this time-consuming and repetitive activity <a class=\"paragraphCTA\" href=\"https:\/\/healthtechmagazine.net\/article\/2024\/11\/ai-and-automation-can-help-ease-stress-laboratory-testing\">could lead to staff burnout<\/a>, Stanford Health Care this year piloted an AI tool that quickly generates a draft response for each query. The tool considers myriad variables, including the patient\u2019s insurance policy, and then creates an accurate, well-formulated response that reflects Stanford Health Care\u2019s brand and voice. \u201cThat work was done manually, and now all of it is generated by the AI tool,\u201d Bhasin says.<\/p>\n<p>After Stanford Health Care launched the pilot in January, 10 billing customer representatives used the AI model to process 1,000 patient billing messages. The tool saved the reps about one minute per message \u2014 adding up to about 17 hours over the two-month pilot. \u201cWe saw substantial time savings,\u201d Bhasin says. \u201cIt\u2019s about augmenting the people who have to do a lot of manual work and making their day-to-day lives easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Stanford Health Care surveyed its billing reps about the AI tool, \u201cthey were super excited about it,\u201d Bhasin says.
