A big congratulations to all those who have made Tahbilk into the brand it is today.<\/p>\n<p>If you have followed me since I started my wine blog back in 2010, then you will have seen numerous mentions and tasting notes about <a href=\"https:\/\/travellingcorkscrew.com.au\/?s=tahbilk\">Tahbilk here on the blog<\/a> alongside on my social channels.<\/p>\n<p>As Victoria\u2019s oldest family-owned winery, Tahbilk is steeped in stories\u2014some celebrated, some quirky, and many you\u2019ve probably never heard before. <\/p>\n<p>From century-old Marsanne vines to whispers of ghosts in the underground cellars, Tahbilk is more than just a place to sip wine\u2014it\u2019s a living, breathing piece of Australian wine history.<\/p>\n<p>So, whether you\u2019re a long-time Tahbilk fan or just discovering their wines, join me as I uncover 100 fascinating, surprising, and little-known facts about Tahbilk Wines. Trust me, by the end of this list, you\u2019ll be planning your next visit (if not already halfway out the door)!<\/p>\n<nav class=\"wp-block-kadence-tableofcontents kb-table-of-content-nav kb-table-of-content-id32157_16a471-1f\" role=\"navigation\" aria-label=\"Table of Contents\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"heritage-amp-history\">Heritage &amp; Winemaking<\/h2>\n<ol start=\"23\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tahbilk has one of the largest single holdings of Marsanne in the world, some of which were planted in 1927.<\/li>\n<li>Their 1927 Vines Marsanne is made from original vines and is highly sought after by collectors.<\/li>\n<li>Tahbilk Shiraz &amp; Cabernet Sauvignon are aged for at least 18 months before being released.<\/li>\n<li>Tahbilk has some of the oldest shiraz vines in the Southern Hemisphere (singular clone).<\/li>\n<li>The 1860 Shiraz vines are among the oldest productive pre-phylloxera vines in the world.<\/li>\n<li>It is thought that the 1860\u2019s Shiraz vines survived Phylloxera because they are<br \/>planted on some of the only sandy soils found on the estate. (Phylloxera cannot survive in sandy soil).<\/li>\n<li>There are over 25 different grape varietals planted on the estate. Environment <\/h2>\n<ol start=\"45\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tahbilk has a unique climate, the property is 1200 hectares total, but only 300<br \/>hectares is under vine.<\/li>\n<li>Nagambie Lakes has its our own GI code within the Goulburn Valley Wine Region recognised by wine Australia and are 1 degree cooler than anywhere else in the Goulburn Valley given their terroir.<\/li>\n<li>Tahbilk was one of the leading pioneers in sustainability in the wine industry.<\/li>\n<li>Tahbilk was certified Carbon Neutral in 2012.<\/li>\n<li>In 2023, the estate was declared \u201cNaturally Net Zero\u201d\u2014offsetting emissions entirely onsite.<\/li>\n<li>Hayley Purbrick led the sustainability effort, joining the business in 2009.<\/li>\n<li>Hayley was inducted into the Melb Food &amp; Estate<\/h2>\n<ol start=\"62\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Tahbilk Cellar Door opened on 13th November 1969.<\/li>\n<li>The Tahbilk Estate Restaurant offers wetland views and a menu featuring local<br \/>produce.<\/li>\n<li>The Tahbilk Wetlands include 6km of boardwalk and walking trails, open to visitors.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tahbilk.com.au\/the-secret-art-of-wine-blending-workshop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wine blending workshops<\/a> are available for guests to craft their own red wine.<\/li>\n<li>The Cellar Door is housed in historic winery buildings from the 1860s.<\/li>\n<li>The estate hosts a Farmer\u2019s Market every fourth Sunday of the month in the Cellar Door Yard, where you can shop &amp; This created a natural habitat for the endangered native cat fish species repopulating in the wetlands.<\/li>\n<li>The Estate was once a town.<\/li>\n<li>We have a death roll of people who have passed away on the estate (not sure how fun this fact is \u2013 but it is definitely interesting!).<\/li>\n<li>The wetlands use to be individual watering holes until the Goulburn Weir was<br \/>damned in 1891. The wetlands became one continuous water way and has never dried out.<\/li>\n<li>Over 100-year-old Mulberry tree\u2019s line Tahbilk\u2019s driveways.<\/li>\n<li>The mulberry trees were planted in hopes of establishing a silk worm industry.<br \/>Unfortunately, the wrong species of Mulberry trees were planted.<\/li>\n<li>Many of the plaques at the Estate have bottles of wines buried behind them.<\/li>\n<li>There are bottle labels from the 1940s preserved in their archives with hand-drawn illustrations.<\/li>\n<li>Tahbilk has an eco-boat which runs tours on the wetlands.<\/li>\n<li>Tahbilk are giving away <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tahbilk.com.au\/wine-diamonds-the-sparkling-secret-in-your-glass\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wine Diamonds<\/a>.
