We all need some low-stakes escapism every now and again, and one supremely addictive show promises to provide exactly that as it returns for its third season this week.

The Netflix sitcom Ginny & Georgia follows the titular mother and daughter duo (played by Antonia Gentry and Brianne Howey) who we meet when they’re putting down roots and trying to start afresh in a suburban Massachusetts town – before things take a rather dark turn, and it’s revealed this family has some skeletons in the closet.

Critics and audiences alike have pretty much all been in agreement over the first two seasons that it’s a sensational watch, even if for… well… not the usual reasons.

However, the popularity of the show speaks for itself, with family comedy-drama overtaking Tiger King back in 2021 for the longest consecutive time spent in Netflix’s top spot at 28 days, which it still holds to this day.

Not only that, but it also ranks among the most-watched Netflix shows of all time, with season two currently sitting at position 17 in the top 20.

Many critics have compared the show to another much-loved mother-daughter series, with iNews’ review of season three branding Ginny & Georgia “Gilmore Girls on steroids”.

CBS Photo Archive via Getty Images

There is, after all, even a line in episode one where mum Georgia tells her teen daughter that they’re “like the Gilmore girls, but with bigger boobs”.

iNews’ critic even admitted the show had become their “favourite hate watch”, echoing what The Guardian said after the season one premiere, asserting that “such perfect trash deserves a special award”.

Vox also claimed that Ginny & Georgia was “so much more than a Gilmore Girls rip-off”, adding: “It is not a perfect show, but it’s a lovable and endlessly watchable one.”

This sentiment continued with season two’s arrival, with The Independent’s critic asking why they “can’t stop watching one of Netflix’s most cringey, awkward shows”.

As season three arrives on the streamer this week, the Telegraph has already described the new season as “a perfect example of the addictive Netflix formula”.

So, with 10 new episodes out now and 20 more before that, now is the perfect time to jump in from the beginning. It’s up to you to decide if it’s storytelling genius, or just binge-able comfort TV.

!["Alexis]("https://img.huffingtonpost.com/asset/67dd7d3c160000210088379c.jpeg?cache=pME2lTD4qF&ops=scalefit_720_noupscale&format=webp"/)
