Here are some fun discoveries about your dog\u2019s navel, an adorable ancient relic of their early puppyhood.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Do Dogs Have Smaller Belly Buttons Than Humans?<\/h2>\n<p>You might be wondering why your dog\u2019s bellybutton is a shallow scar, while your own is more\u2026 dimensional. A human\u2019s belly button is more likely to come in different shapes and sizes, can collect lint, and changes with fluctuations in weight, during pregnancy, and in general throughout our lifetime. A dog\u2019s navel, though, is usually simple and flat.<\/p>\n<p>A dog\u2019s belly button is a simple scar because, according to AKC.org, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/expert-advice\/dog-breeding\/do-dogs-have-belly-buttons\/#:~:text=That's%20because%20a%20puppy's%20umbilical,left%20behind%20is%20less%20dramatic.&amp;text=To%20find%20your%20dog's%20belly,or%20wrinkle%20on%20the%20skin.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"their umbilical cord is much smaller and narrower\">their umbilical cord is much smaller and narrower<\/a>. Dogs are only pregnant for around 60 days, so a puppy\u2019s umbilical cord only needs to be substantial enough to sustain them with oxygen and nutrients for a month and a half. <strong>That\u2019s why a dog\u2019s belly button looks like a narrow slit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Naturally, if your dog has lots of fur on their belly, their bellybutton is all the more hard to find. You might not even notice it unless you\u2019re really looking for it, or feeling for a tiny, telltale knot with your fingertips.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can Dogs Have Innies or Outies?<\/h2>\n<p>Most dog bellybuttons are flat, not really qualifying as either an innie or an outie. Around 10% of humans have an \u201coutie,\u201d belly button with a little bit of protruding flesh that sticks out. This formation is random, caused by the way the area healed shortly after birth. <\/p>\n<p>Some dogs, though, have an <strong>umbilical hernia<\/strong>. Normally, the opening, called the umbilical ring, completely heals and closes up a few days after birth. In some puppies, the ring does not close up all the way. As a result, a bump may form, where tissue or a part of the intestines protrudes. This bump may close up on its own, but it may require corrective surgery if it doesn\u2019t. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s Wrong With My Dog\u2019s Belly Button?<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-dominant-color=\"8f8375\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #8f8375;\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/littledogtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_0915-800x591-jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-5392\"\/><img data-dominant-color=\"8f8375\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #8f8375;\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-5392 lazyload\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/littledogtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_0915.jpg\" width=\"1290\" height=\"953\" id=\"mv-trellis-img-2\" src=\"https:\/\/littledogtips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_0915-800x591-jpg.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" data-trellis-processed=\"1\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Cow\u2019s belly button, which is situated between a fatty lipoma and her green line spay tattoo.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In normal, healthy dogs, the belly button is a flat scar and nothing more. <\/p>\n<p>My dog, Cow, was spayed at a humane society, so hers is filled in with a green tattoo that denotes her spayed status. <\/p>\n<p>She also has an egg-sized lump near it. That\u2019s her fatty lipoma, a benign tumor that our vet aspirated to ascertain that it only contains fat cells, not cancer. It\u2019s unfortunately situated in such a way that makes people mistake her for a male, but otherwise is not causing her issues. <\/p>\n<p>If your dog suddenly develops a lump on or around their belly button, it could be a tumor, and you\u2019ll need your vet to check it to make sure it\u2019s not cancerous. <\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petmd.com\/dog\/conditions\/musculoskeletal\/c_dg_umbilical_hernia_in_dogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">umbilical hernia<\/a> usually develops shortly after birth, and while it may not be an immediate concern it may eventually cause your dog pain or complications, so you should ask your vet if it should be removed.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after birth, a puppy\u2019s belly button is an open wound, so if you\u2019re caring for young puppies, you\u2019ll want to keep that area clean. Use an antiseptic cleanser as directed by your vet to prevent infection until it\u2019s fully healed. If there\u2019s any redness, oozing, or any other concerning symptoms, see your vet right away, as infection of the umbilical area can enter the puppy\u2019s abdomen and potentially become fatal.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Male and Female Dogs Have Different Belly Buttons?<\/h2>\n<p>Both male and female dogs have a belly button that\u2019s located near the base of their ribcage between two rows of nipples. A male dog\u2019s genital area is just below the belly button and should not be confused as such.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Should I Care for My Dog\u2019s Belly Button?<\/h2>\n<p>Your dog\u2019s belly button doesn\u2019t need any special care beyond early puppyhood. You should regularly check your dog\u2019s belly for lumps or bumps, as fatty lumps, breast cancer, and rashes may manifest on their abdomen.
