For the last few years I’ve been following the growing success of Timothy Van Doren, an award winning pitmaster from Alabama. Also known as “Bama Grill Master”, Tim was recently featured on the Food Network’s BBQ Brawl, a show where some of the best chef’s and pitmasters come together to compete as teams each week. His website describes him as a\u00a0<\/span>“God-Fearing Pitmaster from Alabama that competes on the world stage of the Steak Cookoff Association and shares the outdoor cooking lifestyle with as many people as possible.”<\/span><\/p>\n

I recently had the opportunity to have a Q & A with the Alabama resident about his appearance on the show.<\/span>acebook<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

How did you land this opportunity?\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Bama Grill Master:\u00a0<\/b>A casting company reached out to me asking if I would be interested in being on the show.<\/span><\/p>\n

RR:<\/b>\u00a0I know that you’ve had a massive success as a content creator. You have over 1.2 million followers on Tik Tok<\/a>, your videos on there alone have over 15 million likes, almost 400k followers on Instagram<\/a> and over a 1\/2 million followers on Facebook<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

How does that feel?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BGM:<\/b>\u00a0It\u00a0feels surreal that so many\u00a0people are watching my videos. I\u00a0am so\u00a0grateful for every single one of my followers.<\/span><\/p>\n

RR:\u00a0 <\/b>How long have\u00a0you been a barbecue\u00a0enthusiast\u00a0& what sparked your passion for barbecue, and how did you become a pitmaster?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BGM:\u00a0<\/b>I have loved BBQ my whole life. I am from a family of foodies so the\u00a0passion for all things grilling started early. I am far from a pitmaster, I am a backyard\u00a0griller who has been blessed to share my passion with the world!<\/span><\/p>\n

RR:\u00a0<\/b>What professional organizations are you currently a\u00a0part\u00a0of?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BGM:\u00a0<\/b>I am part of The\u00a0SCA<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0KCBS<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n

(The SCA is the Steak Cook-Off Association and KCBS is the Kansas City Barbecue Society)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

RR: <\/b>You have your own line of\u00a0seasonings and rubs<\/a>. How long did\u00a0it\u00a0take to\u00a0develop those & where can they be found?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
BGM:\u00a0<\/b>My rubs took around two years to develop; I tasted and tweaked\u00a0& re-tasted and re-tweaked until they\u00a0were perfect! They are sold at Academy Sports Stores, Amazon,\u00a0Lanes website,<\/a>\u00a0ACE Hardware, many local butcher shops and specialty stores.<\/span><\/div>\n

RR: <\/b>How do regional barbecue styles influence your techniques and flavors?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BGM:\u00a0<\/b>It’s always good to try new techniques and learn different ways to prepare your\u00a0favorite foods!<\/span><\/p>\n

RR:\u00a0 <\/b>If you could share one piece of advice for aspiring pit masters who\u00a0want to compete, what would it be?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BGM:\u00a0<\/b>I\u00a0would definitely\u00a0encourage them to ask other\u00a0cooks. Some of the best advice I’ve gotten was from my fellow competitors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

RR:\u00a0 <\/b>Any plan to go into the restaurant or food truck business?\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

BGM:\u00a0<\/b>No, I feel that the stress of running a restaurant or food truck would take away from the joy I get from cooking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
