Now, a London man has been convicted of a \u201creligiously aggravated public order offence.\u201d Hamit Coskun, 50, a Turkish-born Armenian-Kurdish atheist was arrested after burning a Qur\u2019an.<span id=\"more-232380\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Coskun was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/law\/article\/man-who-burnt-quran-outside-turkish-consulate-found-guilty-7s8b50f8x\">protesting<\/a> the government of Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan in Ankara over his embrace of radical Islamic principles. Exclaiming \u201cf**k Islam\u201d and \u201cIslam is religion of terrorism,\u201d he burned the Qur\u2019an and was then slashed by a Muslim man with a knife. Critics were outraged that the man (who later pleaded guilty) was released while police continued to hold Coskun.<\/p>\n<p>Despite arguing that his protest was protected speech, District Judge John McGarva convicted him and declared that his actions were \u201chighly provocative\u201d and that they were \u201cmotivated at least in part by a hatred of Muslims.\u201d Judge McGarva made clear that his views of Islam would not be tolerated in the United Kingdom:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cAfter considering the evidence, I find you have a deep-seated hatred of Islam and its followers. That\u2019s based on your experiences in Turkey and the experiences of your family. It\u2019s not possible to separate your views about the religion to your views about the followers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I do accept that the choice of location was in part that you wanted to protest what you see as the Islamification of Turkey. But you were also motivated by the hatred of Muslims and knew some would be at the location.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Coskun later correctly condemned the decision as \u201can assault on free speech\u201d and added:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cChristian blasphemy laws were repealed in this country more than 15 years ago, and it cannot be right to prosecute someone for blaspheming against Islam. Would I have been prosecuted if I\u2019d set fire to a copy of the bible outside Westminster Abbey? I doubt it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For years, I have been writing about the decline of free speech in the United Kingdom and the steady stream of arrests, including in my book,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1668047047?tag=simonsayscom__;!!F0Stn7g!AKqJpCN15OF2RfspZrfipd5oSJU0qHcdLBVbtxO8JWX7nIpNliEY7j-Dp-MUgD_coRFSAy_CV_jp3I2cYVM%24\"><em>The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A man was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2022\/04\/03\/british-man-convicted-after-sending-drunk-tweet-about-dead-soldiers\/\">convicted for sending a tweet while drunk referring to dead soldiers<\/a>. Another was arrested for an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2012\/10\/16\/is-free-speech-thew-in-england-manchester-jailed-for-tee-shirt-with-anti-police-writings\/\">anti-police t-shirt.<\/a>\u00a0Another was arrested for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2020\/06\/21\/scottish-man-convicted-of-calling-ex-girlfriends-boyfriend-a-leprechaun\/\">calling the Irish boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend a \u201cleprechaun.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0Yet another was arrested for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2011\/04\/27\/something-serious-wrong-in-wight-singer-arrested-for-singing-kung-fu-fighting\/\">singing \u201cKung Fu Fighting.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0A teenager was arrested for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2009\/03\/10\/thou-shalt-not-blaspheme-scientology-england-criminalizes-criticism-of-the-church-of-scientology\/\">protesting outside of a Scientology center<\/a>\u00a0with a sign calling the religion a \u201ccult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2021\/05\/26\/toxic-ideology-english-neo-nazi-given-four-years-for-his-extremist-views\/\">Nicholas Brock, 52, was convicted of a thought crime in Maidenhead, Berkshire<\/a>. The neo-Nazi was given a four-year sentence for what the court called his \u201ctoxic ideology\u201d based on the contents of the home he shared with his mother in Maidenhead, Berkshire. Judge Peter Lodder QC dismissed free speech or free thought concerns with a truly Orwellian statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cI do not sentence you for your political views, but the extremity of those views informs the assessment of dangerousness.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Lodder lambasted Brock for holding Nazi and other hateful values:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201c[i]t is clear that you are a right-wing extremist, your enthusiasm for this repulsive and toxic ideology is demonstrated by the graphic and racist iconography which you have studied and appeared to share with others\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The fear is that an expanded hate speech law that includes criticism of Islamophobia will operate like a British blasphemy law. In 2008, the\u00a0common law offences\u00a0of\u00a0blasphemy\u00a0and\u00a0blasphemous libel were abolished in England.
