{"id":273812,"date":"2025-06-05T00:44:18","date_gmt":"2025-06-05T00:44:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/activist\/a-playbook-for-combating-corporate-land-theft-emerges-in-borneo-the-understory\/"},"modified":"2025-06-05T00:44:18","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T00:44:18","slug":"a-playbook-for-combating-corporate-land-theft-emerges-in-borneo-the-understory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=273812","title":{"rendered":"A playbook for combating corporate land theft emerges in Borneo &#8211; The Understory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The people of Long Isun recently scored a major<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rodamastimber.co.id\/index.php\/informasi-pengaduan#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> commitment<\/a> from the Harita Group, an Indonesian agribusiness, to cease all logging on their ancestral lands\u2014a remarkable turn of events in a country where corporations usually win.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia\u2019s pro-corporate land use system has caused decades of devastating deforestation, mostly in Borneo and Sumatra, as corporations claim millions of hectares of land for plantations and extractive industries.<\/p>\n<p>This has pushed many Indigenous and local communities off their land, the vast majority of whom don\u2019t have land rights\u2014just<a href=\"https:\/\/www.context.news\/nature\/indonesia-lawmakers-say-indigenous-rights-bill-inching-closer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> 13.8%<\/a> of Indigenous lands have formal recognition, despite the Indonesian government\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aman.or.id\/petition-for-mk-no-35-ruling-and-indigenous-peoples-bill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> 2013 promise<\/a> to hand over Indigenous forests.<\/p>\n<p>The people of Long Isun almost became another casualty of this historic land grab in 2014 when they awoke to an invasion of workers and heavy machinery into their ancestral forests, deep in the heart of Borneo.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22219\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22219\" style=\"width: 1020px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/?attachment_id=22219\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-22219\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-22219\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/RAN_MKU_220715_1DX2_RUL_24822-1020x680.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1020\" height=\"680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/RAN_MKU_220715_1DX2_RUL_24822-1020x680.jpeg 1020w, https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/RAN_MKU_220715_1DX2_RUL_24822-700x467.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/RAN_MKU_220715_1DX2_RUL_24822-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/RAN_MKU_220715_1DX2_RUL_24822-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/RAN_MKU_220715_1DX2_RUL_24822-2048x1366.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/www.ran.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/RAN_MKU_220715_1DX2_RUL_24822-400x267.jpeg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1020px) 100vw, 1020px\"\/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22219\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Long Isun ritual leader Kristina Yeq in July 2022. Credit: Khairul Abdi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Community members managed to peacefully convince the workers to leave, but in response, police arrested and jailed a prominent community member for 109 days without trial. Thus began a decade-long struggle against Harita.<\/p>\n<p>Long Isun successfully barred Harita from a small part of their territory in 2018, but their bid to gain formal land rights stalled out. It was only when they turned to an international audience that they started to make real progress.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, we<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/campaign\/long-isun-fights-for-borneos-vanishing-rainforests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> told the story<\/a> of Long Isun to our supporters and the general public, exposing Harita\u2019s connections to major household brands like Oreo and Head &amp; Shoulders. After a while, Harita came to its senses, committing to never return to Long Isun, <a href=\"https:\/\/bumitama-agri.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Update-on-the-Long-Isun-Case-%E2%80%93-October-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">stating<\/a> that the community had not consented to logging inside their territory.<\/p>\n<p>This highlights the power of corporate pressure campaigns\u2014Harita couldn\u2019t face the prospect of losing some of its biggest corporate clients were they to buckle under rising consumer pressure.<\/p>\n<p>But the fight isn\u2019t over: Harita still owns the timber concession overlapping Long Isun.
