The SAAR pace would be a mild step down from the<br \/>\nrelatively strong November and December 2024 readings but would be<br \/>\nthe fourth consecutive month this metric has been above the<br \/>\n16-million mark. Contributors to the chill of the January sales<br \/>\npace include an expected hangover from the solid closeout to sales<br \/>\nin December 2024, combined with some inclement weather effects in<br \/>\nvarious parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Auto sales are expected to post a decent volume level in<br \/>\nJanuary,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/en\/research-insights\/experts\/hopson-chris\"><br \/>\nChris Hopson<\/a>, principal analyst at S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility. &#8220;An<br \/>\nuncertain auto demand environment awaits in 2025, as the industry<br \/>\nand consumers digest potential policy changes from the new<br \/>\nadministration, but together with the inventory draw down at the<br \/>\nend of 2024, and weather impacts during the month, January sales<br \/>\nshould be viewed as a positive result.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Inventory levels are also lower entering 2025, following the<br \/>\nstrong sales close to 2024 and lower production levels that were<br \/>\nscheduled in December.<\/p>\n<p>According to S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility Retail Advertised Inventory<br \/>\ndata, at the end of December 2024, available retail advertised<br \/>\ninventory in the US was 2.89 million vehicles, its lowest level<br \/>\nsince the first week of July 2024.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ihsmarkit.com\/www\/images\/0125\/january-2025-sales-preview_280120251100143.png\" alt=\"US auto sales January 2025\" width=\"900\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ihsmarkit.com\/www\/images\/0125\/january-2025-light-vehicle-sales-comparisons_290120251134108.png\" alt=\"January 2025 Light Vehicle Sales Comparison\" width=\"600\" height=\"595\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Continued development of battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales<br \/>\nremains an assumption in the longer term S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility<br \/>\nlight vehicle sales forecast. In the immediate term, some<br \/>\nmonth-to-month volatility is anticipated.
