Born in 1874, Stanley grew up with the privileges of Gilded Age wealth. However, in his early 30s, he was diagnosed with severe schizophrenia, then a poorly understood and deeply stigmatized condition. After several hospitalizations, Stanley was declared legally incompetent in 1906.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p class=\"OsDxK iJUzK _178TK Bb686\" dir=\"auto\" id=\"viewer-st69y359\"><span class=\"JtXdA\"><span>His devoted wife, <\/span><strong style=\"font-weight:700\"><span>Katharine Dexter McCormick<\/span><\/strong><span>, became his legal guardian. She was no ordinary woman\u2014Katharine was a pioneering suffragist and biologist, a graduate of MIT, and later a key figure in funding the development of the first birth control pill.
