{"id":272552,"date":"2025-06-04T10:57:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-04T10:57:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/alcohol\/why-costco-and-trader-joes-are-making-their-own-craft-beer\/"},"modified":"2025-06-04T10:57:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-04T10:57:11","slug":"why-costco-and-trader-joes-are-making-their-own-craft-beer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=272552","title":{"rendered":"Why Costco and Trader Joe\u2019s Are Making Their Own Craft Beer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ten years ago, craft beer fans couldn\u2019t have imagined \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/craft-beer-vocabulary-terms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">line life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d referring to anything other than the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/punchdrink.com\/articles\/craft-beer-whales-brewery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hourslong queue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a brewery\u2019s latest limited release. Today, however, it could very well describe the supermarket checkout line. As craft beer fades from shiny new toy into just another everyday beverage option, more beer drinkers are getting their IPA and stout fixes from the same place as their cereal and hummus. And in a growing number of supermarkets, that beer is from a store\u2019s own brand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The popularity of grocery stores\u2019 private-label beer brands\u2014that is, cans and bottles with store-brand labels, but brewed by a contract brewer\u2014is on the rise: Per <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brewbound.com\/news\/aldi-finds-success-with-private-label-beer-holiday-offerings-to-debut-soon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brewbound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sales of these grew by 122 percent from 2023 to 2024. Aldi, whose overall inventory is 90 percent private label, has doubled its beer portfolio to 16 SKUs\u2014plus seasonal additions\u2014in the last two years, and sales have grown over 100 percent. And, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adage.com\/brand-marketing\/food-beverage\/aa-walmart-private-label-beer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">speculative<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/beernet.com\/bbd\/bbd-article\/walmart-prepping-private-label-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Walmart, the country\u2019s largest grocery chain, is working on its own brews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aldi\u2019s lineup includes beers with names and label designs that could come from any local brewery: Wernesgr\u00fcner Pils, Wild Range Brewing Company IPA, White Tide Wheat Beer. At Trader Joe\u2019s, customers can get the store\u2019s own Drive Thru Red Dry Hopped Red Ale, Stockyard Oatmeal Stout or Boatswain IPA\u2014American, double or hazy\u2014under the store\u2019s brewery simulacrum, \u201cJosephsbrau.\u201d Costco has offered beers through its Kirkland Signature brand (which also sells spirits) off and on over the years, but seems to have finally struck gold in fall 2024 with a helles-style lager; it\u2019s been met with rave reviews thanks to the fact it\u2019s actually repackaged Prinz Crispy, a Great American Beer Festival gold medal winner from Oregon\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/deschutesbrewery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deschutes Brewery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>&#13;\n<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" style=\"background: #FFF; border: 0; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: 0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width: 540px; min-width: 326px; padding: 0; width: calc(100% - 2px);\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DDUzHVwSx3g\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\"><p>&#13;<br \/>\n<br \/>&#13;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<hr class=\"hide\"\/>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the beers themselves, overall, among craft beer drinkers, they\u2019re getting mixed feedback. \u201cThe Wernesgruner Pilsner is surprisingly good for the price point,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/atlbeer\/comments\/1i9q3j5\/aldi_beers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says one Reddit user<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/aldiaisleofshame\/posts\/1919308995626687\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAldi Aisle of Shame\u201d Facebook post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a commenter calls that very pilsner \u201cthe only beer worth buying,\u201d while another says all Aldi beers seem milder than those from other breweries. One Redditor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/traderjoes\/comments\/ytm8fw\/has_anyone_tried_trader_jos%C3%A9_imported_beer_was_it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">casts Trader Joe\u2019s entire lineup as a no-go<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while yet <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/beer\/comments\/1dw57nu\/rip_trader_joses_lager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another thread<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is dedicated to mourning the discontinuation of the store\u2019s (vaguely <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eater.com\/2020\/7\/21\/21332645\/trader-joes-changes-racist-product-names-branding-online-petition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">racist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?) Trader Jos\u00e9 Mexican-style lager. Meanwhile, Reddit threads <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Costco\/comments\/1j5aag5\/the_kirkland_helles_style_larger_tastes_pretty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reveal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Costco\u2019s co-branded Deschutes lager has won <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Costco\/comments\/1kcnfse\/kirkland_beer_representing_at_the_2025_world_beer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beer-fan cred<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with shoppers excited about its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Costco\/comments\/1kiz4p7\/im_a_seasoned_beer_drinker_i_bought_the_kirkland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high quality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But why are grocery stores leaning into private-label beer in the first place? Part of it, it seems, is that consumers seem more receptive to it than ever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPrivate label is a proven strategy for grocers: high-margin, high-trust and increasingly consumer-preferred,\u201d says Theodore Schweitz, CEO of CPG networking company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drivewheel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drive Wheel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He says that beer, \u201ca category that\u2019s become bloated and bewildering to consumers,\u201d was prime for the private-label treatment. Retailers have an incredible amount of data on what their customers buy, Schweitz adds, so they can cut through the noise with what their shoppers want and how they want it. Case in point: Aldi has a team dedicated to tracking consumer preferences, according to Arlin Zajmi, the company\u2019s wine specialist and director of national buying for adult beverages. That team collaborates closely with Aldi\u2019s beer and wine suppliers to oversee recipes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Private-label sales are the result of a perfect storm of consumers tightening their belts in the face of an inflation-burdened economy, grocery stores having the resources to zero in on exactly what shoppers want, and the fact that customers trust their go-to stores to deliver quality. Beverage reporter Kate Bernot cites similar private-label offerings in every category, from food and drink to beauty products. \u201cThere are dupes from grocery store and drugstore brands, and TikToks saying \u2018This drugstore-brand lip gloss is just as good as Fenty.\u2019\u201d It\u2019s become more socially accepted than ever to bargain-hunt\u2014why spend more if you don\u2019t have to?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a New York Costco, a 12-pack of Kirkland Signature Helles-Style Lager is $15.69. Deschutes doesn\u2019t sell Prinz Crispy under its original label anymore, but its King Crispy Pilsner is $9.50 for a sixer, so $19 for 12 cans. The difference isn\u2019t earth-shattering, but it\u2019s not nothing. It represents a compromise for consumers who want the taste of craft beer, but wouldn\u2019t mind saving a few bucks.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"\">\n<blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>Young drinkers don\u2019t see craft as a different category, I don\u2019t think. To them, beer is beer.<span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stores, too, are becoming more transparent about who brews their private-label beers\u2014facts that used to be a (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/things-to-do\/food\/spirits\/how-good-are-trader-joes-beers-lets-peek-behind-the-label\/2222846\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poorly<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mashed.com\/1355634\/brands-behind-aldi-beer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kept<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pastemagazine.com\/drink\/trader-joes-beer\/decoding-the-private-label-beers-at-trader-joes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">secret<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Aldi is now open about its partnerships with contract brewers Octopi Brewing and Genesee Brewing Co. as Costco is with Deschutes, and that\u2019s part of the draw for devout craft beer fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat initially drew my eye to the Kirkland lager was that it was brewed by Deschutes,\u201d says Isaac Bell, a Washington, D.C.\u2013based pitmaster and beertender. \u201cAnd that it was a helles lager. One of my favorite styles, brewed by a craft brewery that is part of the Brewers Association&#8230; At less than $1.25 a can for the Kirkland lager, I\u2019ve got Crispys in the fridge all day long.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For upstate New York beer writer Will Cleveland, these grocery store beers offer an opportunity for discovery that drives craft enthusiasts. In particular, he\u2019s a fan of Deschutes\u2019 Costco lager; Mountain Brew, a lager by Paradox Brewery for convenience store chain Stewart\u2019s; and Locken\u2019s Ruby Grapefruit k\u00f6lsch, brewed by Genesee for Aldi. He also shops at Wegmans, which sells store-exclusive beers, like Other Half\u2019s Astor Place hazy IPA; it\u2019s a dollar or two cheaper than the brewery\u2019s other hazies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others attribute this rise to choice\u2014too much of it. Beer writer and author Jeff Alworth <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beervanablog.com\/beervana\/2025\/5\/1\/the-wallpaper-phase-for-craft-beer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that craft beer is in its \u201cwallpaper phase\u201d\u2014as in, craft beer is just <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> now, in the background, another beverage option. \u201cYoung drinkers don\u2019t see craft as a different category, I don\u2019t think. To them, beer is beer,\u201d he says. \u201cModelo or a local IPA? Beer.\u201d When customers don\u2019t consider local, independently made beer special, he adds, they\u2019re less willing to pay a premium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the craft beer market has changed, the breweries that have best weathered the shift are the ones that meet consumers where they are, and use what they know about today\u2019s drinkers to adapt. Ultimately, grocery store chains\u2014with budgets exponentially larger than any craft brewery\u2019s and entire teams dedicated to applying data to product development\u2014are nailing this, courting craft beer fans and more mainstream drinkers alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen beer looks so overwhelming, there\u2019s something very appealing about picking something easy,\u201d says Bernot. \u201cWe forget that\u2019s the way so many people shop: Whether it\u2019s Kirkland beer or Twisted Tea, they\u2019re going for the thing that\u2019s known, easy and clear,\u201d like a can that simply reads <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lager,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> front and center.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ten years ago, craft beer fans couldn\u2019t have imagined \u201cline life\u201d referring to anything other than the hourslong queue for a brewery\u2019s latest limited release.
