The<br \/>\nidea is predicated on the degree to which human behavior is held to be<br \/>\nculturally determined, a basic tenet of American cultural anthropology. This is<br \/>\noften joined with the argument that because all extant cultures are viable<br \/>\nadaptations and equally deserving of respect, they should not be subjected to<br \/>\ninvidious judgments of worth or value by outsiders. Alternatively, some argue<br \/>\nthat since all norms are specific to the culture in which they were formulated,<br \/>\nthere can be no universal standards of judgment. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Cultural<br \/>\nrelativism in American cultural anthropology is often attributed to the<br \/>\ncritique of social evolutionist perspectives by Franz BOAS and his students,<br \/>\nespecially Ruth BENEDICT, Margaret MEAD, and Melville HERSKOVITS. Boas<br \/>\ncriticized the use of EVOLUTIONARY STAGES as the basis for organizing museum displays,<br \/>\narguing that exhibits should display artifacts in the context of specific<br \/>\ncultures. <span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Most<br \/>\nsocieties are not relativist: they view their own ways as good, other people&#8217;s<br \/>\nas bad, inferior, or immoral<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>a form of<br \/>\nETHNOCENTRISM. However, the reverse is also possible, a syndrome Melford Spiro<br \/>\n(1992b: 62 7) termed &#8220;inverted ethnocentrism,&#8221; in which some<br \/>\nanthropologists go well beyond relativism to assert that Western culture is<br \/>\nglobally inferior to Primitive or Third World cultures. <span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Cultural<br \/>\nrelativism as an approach can be contrasted with the search for human<br \/>\nUNIVERSALS, the latter often grounded in claims based on such analytic<br \/>\nperspectives as Freudian psychology, marxist political economy, Darwinian<br \/>\nnatural selection, or technoenvironmental determinism. Strong cultural<br \/>\nrelativists often see anthropology more as an art than a science and prefer to<br \/>\ninterpret symbolic meanings rather than explain social mechanisms. Clifford<br \/>\nGEERTZ (1984b) has been an influential spokesman for this approach. <span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>In the<br \/>\nbroader philosophical context, cultural relativism is sometimes merged with<br \/>\ncognate forms of relativism (moral, ethical, cognitive, linguistic, historical,<br \/>\netc.) under the general rubric of Relativism, which is then seen in opposition<br \/>\nto Rationalism, or occasionally, Fundamentalism (see M. Hollis &amp; Lukes<br \/>\n1982). In treating the lively debates on cultural relativism in anthropology<br \/>\nand philosophy, Spiro (1992b) discussed cultural relativism in relation to both<br \/>\ncultural diversity and cultural determinism. Taking the existence of cultural<br \/>\nvariation as well documented, as do most anthropologists, he distinguished<br \/>\nthree types of cultural relativism<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span>descriptive, normative, and epistemological<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>each with its attendant subtypes. <span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-tab-count: 1;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>These<br \/>\ndetailed distinctions have not become conventional within the discipline.
