CHM director of research & access Ellen Keith shares about the most requested research collections from the Abakanowicz Research Center in 2024.<\/em><\/p>\n

In 2024, staff at the Abakanowicz Research Center<\/a> retrieved nearly 900 linear feet of archival material and more than 500 distinct collections. Here are the top five most requested in 2024, and if you followed what was requested in 2022<\/a> and 2023<\/a>, no surprises for the top collection.<\/p>\n

#5 \u2013 Glessner family papers [manuscript], 1851\u20131960, bulk 1864\u201381<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Chicagoans now consider the Gold Coast the city\u2019s most high-end neighborhood, but in the late 19th century, the most affluent neighborhood was Prairie Avenue<\/a>, south of Roosevelt Road. One of the still extant homes there, now a house museum, is Glessner House<\/a>. At the time, the socially prominent Glessner family was on par with the Armours and the Pullmans.<\/p>\n

#4 \u2013 Business and Professional People for the Public Interest records [manuscript], 1938\u20132003<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

The BPPPI (now Impact for Equity<\/a>), a public interest law firm, most notably sued the Chicago Housing Authority on behalf of Dorothy Gautreaux<\/a> for the placement of public housing in low-income, African American neighborhoods. #3 \u2013 Studs Terkel papers [graphic, manuscript], 1944\u20132008, bulk 1944\u201385<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Louis \u201cStuds\u201d Terkel (1912\u20132008) was a well-known radio host<\/a>, author, oral historian<\/a>, and the Chicago History Museum\u2019s first Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence. He published the oral history compilation Division Street: America in 1966<\/em>, beginning a long career of conducting and publishing oral histories including Hard Times<\/em> (1970), Working<\/em> (1974), and American Dreams: Lost and Found<\/em> (1980). #2 \u2013 Chicago Yacht Club records [manuscript], 1869\u20131999<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Founded in 1875, Chicago\u2019s oldest yacht club has sponsored the Race to Mackinac<\/a> since 1898. This manuscript collection includes correspondence, membership lists, various announcements of activities, programs, and race results, as well as architectural drawings of its Belmont Harbor station.<\/p>\n
