{"id":272079,"date":"2025-06-04T05:30:49","date_gmt":"2025-06-04T05:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/uncategorized\/hunger-and-bullets-palestinians-recall-rafah-aid-massacre-horror-israel-palestine-conflict-news\/"},"modified":"2025-06-04T05:30:49","modified_gmt":"2025-06-04T05:30:49","slug":"hunger-and-bullets-palestinians-recall-rafah-aid-massacre-horror-israel-palestine-conflict-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=272079","title":{"rendered":"Hunger and bullets: Palestinians recall Rafah aid massacre horror | Israel-Palestine conflict News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p><strong>Khan Younis, Gaza<\/strong> \u2013 Yazan Musleh, 13, lies in a hospital bed set up in a tent on the grounds of Nasser Hospital, his t-shirt pulled up to reveal a large white bandage on his thin torso.<\/p>\n<p>Beside him, his father, Ihab, sits fretfully, still shaken by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/6\/1\/israel-kills-32-palestinians-waiting-for-food-at-us-backed-gaza-aid-sites\">the bloodied dawn<\/a> he and his sons lived through on Sunday when Israeli forces opened fire on thousands of people gathered to receive aid from the Israeli-conceived, and United States-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).<\/p>\n<p>Ihab, 40, had taken Yazan and his 15-year-old brother, Yazid, from their shelter in al-Mawasi, Khan Younis, to the Rafah distribution point that the GHF operates.<\/p>\n<p>They set out before dawn, walking for about an hour and a half to get to the al-Alam Roundabout in Rafah, near the distribution point.<\/p>\n<p>Worried about the size of the gathering, hungry crowd, Ihab told his sons to wait for him on an elevation near the GHF gates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I looked behind the hill, I saw several tanks not far away,\u201d he says. \u201cA feeling of dread came over me. What if they opened fire or something happened? I prayed for God\u2019s protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the crowd moved closer to the gates, heavy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/longform\/2025\/5\/29\/visual-guide-to-how-the-gaza-aid-distribution-turmoil-unfolded\">gunfire erupted from all directions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was terrified. I immediately looked towards my sons on the hill, and saw Yazan get shot and collapse,\u201d he recalls.<\/p>\n<p>Yazid, also sitting by his brother\u2019s bedside, describes the moments of terror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were standing on the hill as our father told us, and suddenly, the tanks opened fire.\u201d He says. \u201cMy brother was hit in the stomach immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw his intestines spilling out \u2013 it was horrifying. Then people helped rush him to the hospital in a donkey cart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Down by the gates, Ihab was struggling to reach his sons, trying to fight against the crowd while avoiding the shots still ringing out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShooting was coming from every direction \u2013 from tanks, quadcopters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw people helping my son, eventually dragging him away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Ihab managed to get away from the crowd, he ran as best as his malnourished body could manage, towards Nasser Hospital, in hopes that Yazan had been taken there. It felt like more than an hour, he says.<\/p>\n<p>At Nasser Hospital, he learned that Yazan had been taken into surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI finally breathed. I thanked God he was still alive. She and Ihab have five children, the youngest is a seven-month-old girl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to get food for my children. Hunger is killing us,\u201d says Ihab.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese aid distributions are known to be degrading and humiliating \u2013 but we\u2019re desperate. I\u2019m desperate because my children are starving, and even then, we are shot at?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had tried to get aid once before, he says, but both times he came away empty-handed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first time, there was a deadly stampede. We barely escaped. This time, my son was wounded and again\u2026 nothing,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>But he knows he cannot stop trying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll risk it for my family. Either I come back alive or I die. I\u2019m desperate. Hunger is killing us.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-group-distributing-aid\">The group distributing aid<\/h2>\n<p>The GHF, marketed as a neutral humanitarian mechanism, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/5\/20\/what-is-the-gaza-humanitarian-foundation-and-why-has-it-been-criticised\">launched in early 2025<\/a> and uses private US military contractors to \u201csecure the distribution points\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The GHF\u2019s head, Jake Wood, resigned his post two days before distribution began, citing concerns that the foundation would not be impartial or act in accordance with humanitarian principles.<\/p>\n<p>Five days later, on May 30, the Boston Consulting Group, which had been part of the planning and implementation of the foundation, withdrew its team and terminated its association with GHF.<\/p>\n<p>International aid organisations have been unanimous in criticising the GHF and its methods.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"we-went-looking-for-food-for-our-hungry-children\">\u2018We went looking for food for our hungry children\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Lying nearby in the tent ward is Mohammed al-Homs, 40, a father of five.<\/p>\n<p>He had also headed out early on Sunday to try to get some food for his family, but moments after arriving at the al-Alam Roundabout roundabout, \u201cI was shot twice \u2013 once in the leg and once in the mouth, shattering my front teeth,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI collapsed, there were so many injured and dead around me. Everyone was screaming and running. Gunfire was coming from tanks, drones everywhere. It felt like the end of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lay bleeding on the ground for what felt like an hour, as medical teams were not able to reach the injured.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3749653\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3749653\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-3749653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image00002-1748935722.jpg?w=770&amp;resize=770%2C578&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"A thin, bald man with a gentle face lies in his hospital bed\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3749653\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mohammed al-Homs, father of five, was shot in the mouth and leg [Abdullah al-Attar\/Al Jazeera]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then, word spread that the gates had opened for distribution, and those who could move started heading towards the centre.<\/p>\n<p>It was only then that people could start moving the wounded to a nearby medical point.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was my first time trying to get aid, and it will be my last,\u201d Mohammed says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t expect to survive. We went looking for food for our hungry children and were met with drones and tanks.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"i-never-imagined-i-d-face-death-for-a-box-of-food\">\u2018I never imagined I\u2019d face death for a box of food\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Also in the tent is someone who had succeeded in getting an aid package on the first day of distribution, on May 27, and decided to try again on Sunday: 36-year-old Khaled al-Lahham.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Lahham is taking care of 10 family members: his parents, one aunt, and seven siblings, all of whom are displaced in the tents of al-Mawasi.<\/p>\n<p>He had managed to catch a ride with five friends that morning, driving as close as they could to the al-Alam Roundabout roundabout.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3749564\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3749564\" style=\"width:770px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3749564 size-arc-image-770\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/image00004-1748934015.jpg?resize=770%2C578&amp;quality=80\" alt=\"Khaled al-Lahham lies fretfully in a hospital bed. I felt a sharp pain in my leg \u2013 a bullet had passed clean through my thigh,\u201d says Khaled, who did not make it fully out of the car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was screaming and bleeding while people around me ran and screamed. The shooting was frenzied,\u201d he adds. \u201cThere were tanks, quadcopters \u2013 fire came from every direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Injured, Khaled could not get out of the car and huddled there until one of his friends managed to return and drive him to the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never imagined I\u2019d face death for a box of food,\u201d Khaled says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they don\u2019t want to distribute the aid, why do they lie to people and kill them like this?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is all deliberate.
