{"id":271896,"date":"2025-06-04T03:26:47","date_gmt":"2025-06-04T03:26:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/uncategorized\/pusha-t-clipse-paid-seven-figures-to-exit-def-jam-deal\/"},"modified":"2025-06-04T03:26:47","modified_gmt":"2025-06-04T03:26:47","slug":"pusha-t-clipse-paid-seven-figures-to-exit-def-jam-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=271896","title":{"rendered":"Pusha T &#038; Clipse Paid Seven Figures to Exit Def Jam Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/hiphop-n-more.com\/2025\/06\/pusha-t-speaks-on-departure-from-def-jam-over-request-to-censor-kendrick\/\">Pusha T dropped the bomb<\/a> that Clipse departed from Def Jam because they wanted to censor a Kendrick Lamar verse or completely remove it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey wanted me to ask Kendrick to censor his verse, which of course I was never doing,\u201d Pusha T told GQ. \u201cAnd then they wanted me to take the record off [the album].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, his manager Steven Victor has provided more details into what went down behind the scenes, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/pusha-t-clipse-leave-def-jam-insane-amount-money\/?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAafdrcj20bAGdo1hCyLHOFYax3ByuHFUkDYZLfBUuGyxLAa3N09-rJlJU6RQcA_aem_ZEpkKFpFtoYtOsb2B89xNg\">Billboard<\/a>. \u201cIf you\u2019re an artist, your whole life is to create art and put it out,\u201d Victor says. \u201cIf someone\u2019s telling you that you can\u2019t do that, or you have to do it within the confines of whatever box they put you in, that\u2019s like creative jail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He discussed that UMG has this department where they review lyrics \u201cso it was that department. The real reason [that department] is there is to protect the artists and the label from lawsuits for copyright infringement. They do it for all the labels. Some labels adhere to it closer than others. Let\u2019s say you interpolate somebody else\u2019s song. [That department] is there to make sure that the song is properly cleared. It\u2019s not meant to be like, \u201cYou said XYZ about XYZ artist, so we\u2019re not going to release this music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what their concern is. But they were like, \u201cThere\u2019s a line here; we think it\u2019s controversial; [Kendrick] needs to change it, or we\u2019re not putting it out.\u201d We\u2019re not going to ask him to change the verse. You guys are wrong. Stop looking at this this way. None of this makes any sense,\u201d said Steven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time he puts out an album or a song, you can\u2019t listen to it to make sure that he\u2019s not dissing somebody before you put it out. He has to think about what he\u2019s saying before he\u2019s saying it in the hopes that you might not think that he\u2019s saying the wrong thing? Who could live their life like that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to them and I said, \u201cLet us put the song out somewhere else since you guys have an issue with it. You guys won\u2019t have to stand behind whatever complications come from it. We\u2019ll put the song out somewhere else, and we\u2019ll license it back to you guys when the album comes out.\u201d Their response was, \u201cHow about you just find somewhere else to put out Clipse? Just pay something to us and put it out somewhere else,\u201d Steven revealed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy thing was, we can\u2019t do that \u2014 Pusha and the Clipse are one thing. [At this point], he clearly doesn\u2019t trust you guys. You guys haven\u2019t been good stewards of his career. So they said, \u201cFind another deal, and let\u2019s figure out a business.\u201d They didn\u2019t drop us. They were like, \u201cPay us this money\u201d \u2014 which was an exorbitant amount of money, a s\u2014t ton of money \u2014 \u201cand we\u2019ll let you out the deal.\u201d That\u2019s what happened. We paid them the money, an insane amount of money. It wasn\u2019t, like, $200,000. It was a lot of money for an artist to come up with. They bought themselves out of the deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Steven further revealed that Pusha had 3 solo albums left as part of the deal which they quickly got out of and simultaneously initiated a conversation with Jay-Z to distribute through Roc Nation. Pusha\/Clipse also had agree to a share of profit from the new deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we pay you this amount of money and a part of the profit? Can we figure out a deal where we pay you as the guys make money from the new release, instead of coming up with this large sum of money [right now]?\u201d They said no. They were like, \u201cWe want our money, and we want some of the profits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook, this is what\u2019s happening. We\u2019ve been talking about doing X, Y, Z, together. There\u2019s an opportunity here to do this album. What do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hit me back right away, like, \u201cYou just made my day. Let\u2019s figure it out. What do we need to get it done?\u201d I went back to Pusha, and said, \u201cListen, Jay\u2019s gonna give us a very artist-friendly deal, we get to own the masters, and they\u2019ll put the marketing power of Roc Nation behind it. You guys are friends. It\u2019s a great outcome.\u201d We worked out the deal in less than 24 hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPusha is having way more success creatively, financially and professionally, than he did at the peak of his career, which was when [Clipse\u2019s] \u201cGrindin\u2019\u201d came out.
