It\u2019s expected to reach some of the southeastern United States in the coming days, but it will have lost some of its concentration by then.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose [Caribbean] islands tend to see more of an impact, more of a concentration where it can actually block out the sun a little bit at times,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/afb.accuweather.com\/blog\/meet-the-mets-accuweathers-alex-dasilva\">Alex DaSilva<\/a>, lead hurricane expert with AccuWeather, to D\u00e1nica Coto at the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sahara-dust-caribbean-florida-barbados-jamaica-plume-e0aafba9fe672b832559606e499e1280\">Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While the dust led to coughing, sneezing and watery eyes as it swept through the Caribbean, according to the AP, it won\u2019t be as dense once it reaches the continental U.S., potentially hitting states such as Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. You can monitor your local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airnow.gov\/aqi\/aqi-basics\/\">Air Quality Index<\/a> to see if you need to take special precautions, since dust particles can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khou.com\/article\/weather\/saharan-dust-health-impacts-air-quality-houston\/285-bf1fd877-05f9-4ccf-959b-7cd7dec6c540\">trigger allergies<\/a> and impact individuals with respiratory issues.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=335&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FNOAASatellites%2Fvideos%2F1130047875810713%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=560&amp;t=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"335\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>During the late spring and into the early fall each year, a large mass of dry, dusty air forms naturally over the Sahara Desert, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aoml.noaa.gov\/what-is-the-saharan-air-layer\/\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a>. That\u2019s because the temperature difference between the hot, arid Sahara and the cooler, semi-arid\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Sahel\">Sahel<\/a> region to its south leads to ripples in the lower atmosphere called \u201ctropical waves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As these \u201cwaves\u201d blow through the region, they pick up desert dust and loft it high into the air\u2014creating a 2- to 2.5-mile-thick layer of haze roughly one mile above the ground. Then, winds from the African Easterly Jet carry the particles west over the Atlantic, with some dust moving out over the ocean every three to five days. This dust is known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aoml.noaa.gov\/saharan-air-layer\/\">Saharan Air Layer, or SAL<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Every once in a while, like with this upcoming dust storm, the conditions are such that large amounts of dust can get all the way to the U.S. A smaller plume had <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSMiami\/status\/1927872632306720856\">already gone over South Florida<\/a> last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt happens every year; some years have more dust transportation across the Atlantic than others,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/media\/mfl\/Bios\/SH.pdf\">Sammy Hadi<\/a>, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Miami, to Amy Graff at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/02\/weather\/saharan-dust-florida-gulf-coast.html\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s like rinse and repeat every year, it\u2019s part of a normal cycle of Earth\u2019s oscillations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once the next dust cloud reaches Florida, people can expect to see hazier skies. \u201cTypically, we have nice blue skies, but with the dust, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/skies-over-athens-turn-a-martian-orange-amid-saharan-dust-storm-180984228\/\">the whole sky looks soft and warm<\/a>, because the particles themselves are red,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/cast.miami.edu\/members\/joseph-prospero.html\">Joseph Prospero<\/a> of the University of Miami Center for Aerosol Science and Technology to the <em>New York Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>For many in the plume\u2019s area, that means they will get to see more unusual sunrises and sunsets, since the sunlight that hits dust particles near the ground will result in orange and red hues, explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ana-torres-vazquez\/\">Ana Torres-Vazquez<\/a>, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service\u2019s Miami office, to Meghan Bartels at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/sahara-dust-clouds-are-heading-to-florida-and-beyond\/\"><em>Scientific American<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This dust plume is also arriving shortly after the start of the Atlantic hurricane season, which began on June 1 and is predicted to bring a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/news-release\/noaa-predicts-above-normal-2025-atlantic-hurricane-season\">higher than normal level of activity<\/a> this year. But scientists suggest the warmth and dryness that accompany the dust can work to suppress hurricane development, per<em> Scientific American<\/em>,<em> <\/em>since the storms need moisture to form. As a result, the dust could help prevent tropical storms from materializing in the region this week.<\/p>\n<p>For now, meteorologists are <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/storms\/hurricane\/news\/2025-06-02-first-area-to-watch-2025-atlantic-hurricane-season-southeast-coast\">monitoring the southeastern coast for tropical or subtropical hurricane development<\/a>, and the chance of a storm coming later this week remains low.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMother Nature is fascinating,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aoml.noaa.gov\/people\/jason-dunion\/\">Jason Dunion<\/a>, a meteorologist at NOAA\u2019s Hurricane Research Division, says to the <em>New York Times<\/em>. \u201cIt set up this Saharan dust factory right next to the hurricane nursery.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"in-article-newsletter\">\n<div class=\"leade\">\n<h3>Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<section class=\"tag-list\">\n<nav class=\"nav-tags\">\n<\/nav>\n<\/section><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The plume of dust has already blown over the Caribbean and is expected to reach Florida later this week Sara Hashemi &#8211; Daily Correspondent June 3, 2025 5:25 p.m. A snapshot of the eastern United States as of June 3, from NOAA&#8217;s GOES-19 satellite.
