But he is not a climate scientist.<\/p>\n<p>That fact might make him the perfect person to communicate the urgency of global heating to mass audiences. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to speak to people in a way they can understand,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"David Cross Meets Prof Michael Oppenheimer | NSFW\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6KZy251WiWc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>That\u2019s the purpose of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mEZ2GlHqZms\">new video<\/a> in which Cross co-stars with renowned environmental scientist Michael Oppenheimer. \u201cHumor, as I think has been shown over centuries, is a very effective way to get people to absorb the information,\u201d said Cross.<\/p>\n<p>The new video puts that theory to the test. In it, Oppenheimer plays the straight man, issuing a dire warning: \u201cHeat records are being broken all over the world. In fact, last year was the hottest year since the industrial era began,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Cross then interprets that message for laypeople. \u201cTranslation: The shit is hitting the fan,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd the fan is on maximum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The video was released by the group Climate Science Breakthrough, which has over the past two years has made videos with leading UK comedians such as Nish Kumar and Jo Brand in an attempt to \u201chelp climate science break through to many more people\u2014and unlock action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re aiming to reach beyond the converted and depolarize the debate,\u201d said Ben Carey, one of the video\u2019s producers. If the new video is well-received, they\u2019ll enlist more scientists and experts to produce more of them, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The video series comes as part of a wave of climate-focused comedy launched in recent years. In 2023, Oscar-winning director Adam McKay launched\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/mar\/09\/adam-mckay-climate-change-commercial-videos\">the non-profit Yellow Dot Studios<\/a>\u00a0to make content about the dangers of fossil fuels, and the following year,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2023\/oct\/20\/gas-leaks-horror-movie-climate-change-campaign\">climate advocacy organization Gas Leaks Project<\/a>\u00a0launched a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hotandtoxic.com\/\">mini series<\/a>\u00a0about the dangers of gas stoves.<\/p>\n<p>These projects could help reach people who experts aren\u2019t often reaching, said Oppenheimer, since \u201cmost of the training for young scientist is aimed at being able to communicate enough so you get your next job, not necessarily aimed at communicating to the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If it seems odd to use humor to build awareness about a grim subject, Cross says it\u2019s a tactic with a long history. Indeed, George Carlin railed against censorship in the 1970s, while Bill Hicks famously used his platform to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HT84nMCwHtY\">speak out<\/a>\u00a0against George W. Bush\u2019s foreign policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven before standup existed, there was Moliere and Voltaire and [Jonathan] Swift and Mark Twain\u2014there is a huge precedent for artists using humor and satire to drive home a point,\u201d said Cross.<\/p>\n<p>The use of humor may help drive the urgency of the climate crisis home for certain audiences, said Oppenheimer, particularly \u201cwhen the news is so chockablock full of news that competes for people\u2019s attention.\u201d But comedy is not the only tool that can be used to better communicate the urgency of the climate crisis, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome scientists are excellent at communicating with religious audiences and can frame the issues in a way that resonates with them [while] other scientists are great at connecting with parents,\u201d he said. \u201cThe point is, more scientists are recognizing that it\u2019s not always enough to lay out the facts or the data, that we have to find ways to encourage people to listen and take notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A snapshot from the Cross-Oppenheimer video collaboration.
