But before Alabama voters hand them the keys to even more power, let\u2019s be blunt: these two have already proven themselves to be reckless, short-sighted, and all too willing to sacrifice the rights of Black Alabamians and the stability of their own party.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1645\">Their redistricting debacle isn\u2019t just a legal failing \u2014 it\u2019s a self-inflicted wound that has cracked the Republican stronghold they claim to protect. Instead of following the U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s clear order in <em data-start=\"1341\" data-end=\"1360\">Allen v. Milligan <\/em>\u2014 to create a second majority-Black congressional district \u2014 Marshall and Robertson decided they knew better. They gambled that ignoring the Court would somehow preserve Republican control. What they actually did was hand Alabama\u2019s map \u2014 and key Republican seats \u2014 over to the federal courts.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1647\" data-end=\"2104\">The federal three-judge panel, including two Trump appointees, didn\u2019t mince words: Alabama\u2019s 2023 congressional map \u201cpurposefully refused\u201d to provide Black voters equal opportunity. That\u2019s not just a rebuke of bad policy \u2014 it\u2019s a direct shot at Marshall\u2019s and Robertson\u2019s leadership. The result? For the first time in history, Alabama sent two Black representatives \u2014 Terri Sewell and Shomari Figures \u2014 to Congress, flipping Republican dominance on its head.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2106\" data-end=\"2511\">Let\u2019s be clear: Marshall and Robertson\u2019s strategy wasn\u2019t about protecting Alabama. It was about keeping the dark money pipeline flowing from Leonard Leo\u2019s billion-dollar empire in Washington. Alabama\u2019s legal defense was orchestrated by the Consovoy McCarthy law firm \u2014 Leo\u2019s trusted legal attack dogs \u2014 and shepherded by Solicitor General Edmund LaCour, who\u2019s made a career out of cozying up to Leo\u2019s network.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2513\" data-end=\"2855\">This wasn\u2019t just a losing legal fight \u2014 it was a political suicide mission. They banked on Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alreporter.com\/2023\/09\/16\/dark-money-the-backstory-of-alabamas-redistricting-defiance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brett Kavanaugh flipping his previous vote<\/a> and gutting the Voting Rights Act entirely. It was a fantasy \u2014 one that didn\u2019t just blow up in Marshall and Robertson\u2019s faces but also threatened the very power Republicans have fought to hold in Alabama.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2857\" data-end=\"3336\">If that wasn\u2019t enough, President Donald Trump \u2014 no stranger to gutting political adversaries \u2014 has now turned on Leonard Leo himself, calling him a \u201creal sleazebag\u201d and blaming the Federalist Society for installing judges who are no longer propping up his second-term agenda. Trump\u2019s outburst lays bare how fragile the Republican coalition really is \u2014 and how Alabama\u2019s leadership was playing a dangerous game that didn\u2019t even have the backing of the party\u2019s most powerful voice.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3338\" data-end=\"3825\">This is what makes Marshall and Robertson\u2019s redistricting disaster so infuriating: it wasn\u2019t about Alabama at all. It was about paying homage to national ideological puppeteers who see Alabama as nothing more than a pawn in their relentless campaign to roll back civil rights and voting protections. And in the end, it\u2019s Alabama Republicans left holding the bag \u2014 facing lost congressional seats, lost credibility and a wave of lawsuits that could crack open the GOP\u2019s grip on Montgomery.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"3827\" data-end=\"4137\">No one\u2019s accusing Marshall and Robertson of breaking the law. But let\u2019s call this what it is: a shameless display of hubris, arrogance and outright incompetence. They didn\u2019t just lose a legal battle \u2014 they threw away Republican seats in Congress and opened the door to even more losses in the State Legislature.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4139\" data-end=\"4446\">So here\u2019s the question for Alabama voters. Why would we trust these two to run for higher office after they\u2019ve already proven they\u2019re willing to gamble away voting rights and Republican power alike? Why should we reward leaders who put national puppet masters ahead of the people they were elected to serve?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4448\" data-end=\"4854\">Come 2026, the choice couldn\u2019t be clearer. Alabama can stick with Marshall and Robertson and watch Republican power slip further through their fingers. Or Alabama can say enough \u2014 no more games, no more out-of-state strings and no more self-sabotage.
