But Marguerite was one of her father\u2019s few constants, sitting for hundreds of his works, always willing to go wherever the art asked them to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mam.paris.fr\/en\/expositions\/exhibitions-matisse-and-marguerite\">Matisse and Marguerite: Through Her Father\u2019s Eyes<\/a>,\u201d an exhibition at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mam.paris.fr\/en\">Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Art Moderne<\/a> in Paris, assembles more than 110 works\u2014paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures\u2014in which Matisse gathered inspiration from his daughter.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"video\">\n<div class=\"embedly-plugin\" data-type=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-image\">\n<p>TEASER | Matisse et Marguerite | Mus\u00e9e d&#8217;Art Moderne de Paris<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/N5S-DhobJ6o\/maxresdefault.jpg\" data-video-id=\"N5S-DhobJ6o\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>  <iframe width=\"854\" src=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"player\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay\"><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>While many of the works, especially the drawings, have never appeared in Matisse shows, organizers initially worried that an exhibition focusing on the artist\u2019s portraits of one person would veer into tedium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut actually, Matisse renews himself so often,\u201d Charlotte Barat-Mabille, the curator at the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Art Moderne, tells the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2025\/03\/28\/henri-matisses-daughter-marguerite-inspires-a-new-angle-on-the-ubiquitous-artist\"><em>Art Newspaper<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Dale Berning Sawa. While the model stays the same, the artworks shift from style to style. \u201cIt is sumptuous, varied, alive,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>Marguerite was born in 1894, the daughter of Matisse, then an unknown art student, and Caroline Joblaud, one of his models. Matisse and Joblaud never married, but he officially recognized his daughter when she was 3. After he married\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterworksfineart.com\/bio\/amelie-matisse-2?srsltid=AfmBOopxFomQIsMa_fxaKOK4xuXfY9b0qETMaeXEEu9vDfqfMSsAu9pp\">Am\u00e9lie Parayre<\/a> in 1898, the couple brought Marguerite into the family, alongside their sons Jean and Pierre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI adore Matisse. I love his work,\u201d Barat-Mabille tells the <em>Art Newspaper<\/em>. \u201cBut what makes you love him even more is discovering him as a father, in what really was, for its time, a very modern family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marguerite\u2019s modeling work began early. Because of her frequent childhood illnesses, she didn\u2019t attend school on a regular schedule. Instead, she spent time around her father\u2019s studio. The subject is simple: Marguerite hunches over a book at a table. But Matisse\u2019s brush offers a remarkably vivid depiction of such a quiet scene, boldly painting \u201cin the vibrant, colourful style characteristic of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/essays\/fauvism\">Fauvism<\/a>,\u201d according to the statement.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.museedegrenoble.fr\/oeuvre\/1592\/1922-marguerite-lisant.htm\"><em>Marguerite Reading<\/em><\/a> (1906), Matisse takes an almost identical scene\u2014Marguerite reading at a table\u2014but translates it into a radically different portrait of his daughter. The wild colors of Fauvism have subsided into pale blues, muddled whites and the red seen in Marguerite\u2019s dress and hair ribbon.<\/p>\n<p>Just four years later, Matisse offered another landmark depiction of his daughter,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.centrepompidou.fr\/en\/ressources\/oeuvre\/caj44bX\"><em>Marguerite With a Black Cat<\/em><\/a>. She sits upright on a yellow chair with a candy-like green and pink background splitting the canvas in two. Unlike in portraits from her younger years, she is not bent over a book. As much as these portraits trace Matisse\u2019s artistic development, they also outline his daughter\u2019s life. In <em>Marguerite With a Black Cat<\/em>, as in many of her portraits, something\u2014in this case a high collar\u2014covers her throat. She\u2019s concealing a scar from her first tracheotomy, performed after she fell ill with diphtheria at the age of 7.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Matisse painted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centrepompidou.fr\/en\/ressources\/oeuvre\/d3ksoO1\"><em>White and Pink Head<\/em><\/a> (1914-15) during his \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/arts-culture\/when-cubism-met-the-decorative-arts-in-france-1-42077122\/\">Cubism<\/a>-adjacent phase,\u201d as the <em>Art Newspaper <\/em>writes. The artwork shows how neither father nor daughter remained static in the painter-model relationship. She dabbled in painting and started a career in fashion design, forging her own path in the art world. During World War II, Marguerite joined the French resistance and was imprisoned and tortured by the Gestapo. While en route to a prison in Germany, she escaped and reunited with her father in the small French village of Vence. Overwhelmed by her story, Matisse drew two charcoal portraits of Marguerite. They are simple and poignant\u2014a few lines conveying all that she had to share.<\/p>\n<p>Matisse died nine years later, with Marguerite by his side. She spent the rest of her life promoting his legacy, taking a leading role in exhibitions, catalogs and sales.<\/p>\n<p>As Matisse\u2019s work enters the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/public-domain-2025-kahlo-matisse-derain-2594461\">public domain<\/a> this year, adorning more phone cases and scarves than ever before, Marguerite, who died in 1982, commands a quieter legacy.
