In contrast, a studio operating out of New Rochelle, New York received coverage for multiple days about its closing. The story broke on November 29, 1972, that Terrytoons\u2013the studio responsible for Mighty Mouse, Heckle and Jeckle, and Deputy Dawg\u2013intended to shut down operations in its facility on 38 Centre Avenue and transfer to an office run by the studio\u2019s owner Viacom in New York City. A few papers in cities near New Rochelle reported that news the next day. Then, a new wave of reports began on January 4, 1973, announcing that Terrytoons had indeed closed. The coverage is revealing in that it offers a glimpse into the state of animation at the time and a look at what happens when an animation studio shuts down.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/terrytoon_plaza550.jpg\" rel=\"prettyphoto[90568]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/terrytoon_plaza550-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/terrytoon_plaza550-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/terrytoon_plaza550-150x105.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/terrytoon_plaza550-144x100.jpg 144w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/terrytoon_plaza550.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"\/><\/a>The November 1972 reports noted that shortly before the studio\u2019s decision to close, Bill Weiss, who succeeded founder Paul Terry as head of Terrytoons, had retired in September 1972, but Viacom had retained him as a consultant for the studio. The New Rochelle Standard-Star said that the studio at its peak had employed ninety people, and it mentioned that the studio\u2019s building had three floors. Most revealing is that Terrytoons admitted to not having actually made new cartoons for a while. \u201cThe firm\u2019s operations \u2026 in recent years consisted mainly of sales and servicing for existing cartoons,\u201d stated the Standard-Star. To add insult to the injury of the studio\u2019s demise, the headline out of the White Plains Argus of November 30 had a cartoon reference from another studio: \u201cThat\u2019s All Folks! Terrytoons Closing.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_90557\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Terrytoons-google.jpg\" rel=\"prettyphoto[90568]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90557\" src=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Terrytoons-google-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-90557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Terrytoons-google-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Terrytoons-google-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Terrytoons-google.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-90557\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">J.J. Sedelmaier grabbed this image of 38 Centre Avenue off Google Maps back in 2013.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The story of January 4, 1973, was more reflective, an obituary for Terrytoons as it had existed in New Rochelle since 1934. Weiss made sure to emphasize that Terrytoons continued to exist as a part of Viacom but not for active cartoon production. Interestingly, he did not completely rule out the studio\u2019s resumption of production, but he said that such a reopening would be in much different circumstances. \u201cIf our production of cartoons were to resume again, and it might someday, we\u2019d probably have to open on the west coast,\u201d he predicted. Ironically, animation production featuring Terrytoons stars did take place out west later in the decade, but Filmation\u2013not Terrytoons\u2013made the cartoons.<\/p>\n<p>On January 5, 1973, the final story about Terrytoons\u2019 shuttering appeared in the Standard-Star. This time it was a joint interview with Weiss and longtime studio employee Tommy Morrison. The article physically describes Morrison as a \u201cthin, ruddy-faced man\u201d with \u201clight blue eyes and quick movements.\u201d As Weiss and Morrison were interviewed, they \u201csat in their New Rochelle office, amidst cartons and furniture labeled for shipment to New York.\u201d The interview itself took place on January 3, and Viacom\u2019s sale of the New Rochelle building on December 29, 1972, had necessitated the packing away of the studio\u2019s property. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Terrytoon-Film-Reel.jpg\" rel=\"prettyphoto[90568]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Terrytoon-Film-Reel-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-90558\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Terrytoon-Film-Reel-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Terrytoon-Film-Reel-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\"\/><\/a>When asked that day about animation\u2019s future, Weiss replied that computer animation was the future. \u201cThey\u2019re now working on a way to produce animated work by computer.\u201d Morrison, however, sharply responded, \u201cNever!\u201d He added, \u201cIt won\u2019t be animation if the human intelligence, the creativity is taken out of it.\u201d Of course, Weiss\u2019s prediction proved correct, but Morrison\u2019s response showed how much he cared for animation as it had existed exclusively from the hands and minds of New Rochelle\u2019s artists for so many years. <\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_90560\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90560\" src=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/there-he-was-Mighty-Mouse.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-90560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/there-he-was-Mighty-Mouse.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/there-he-was-Mighty-Mouse-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/there-he-was-Mighty-Mouse-150x88.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-90560\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pop artist Charles Fazzino has installed this tribute to the studio on the corner of North Ave. &amp; Huguenot St. in downtown New Rochelle.
