{"id":269357,"date":"2025-06-02T22:14:58","date_gmt":"2025-06-02T22:14:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/alabama\/proposed-major-cuts-to-nasa-would-likely-hit-huntsville-heavily\/"},"modified":"2025-06-02T22:14:58","modified_gmt":"2025-06-02T22:14:58","slug":"proposed-major-cuts-to-nasa-would-likely-hit-huntsville-heavily","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=269357","title":{"rendered":"Proposed major cuts to NASA would likely hit Huntsville heavily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Under the Trump administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alreporter.com\/2025\/05\/05\/how-trumps-proposed-federal-budget-would-reshape-alabama\/\">budget proposal<\/a> for the 2026 fiscal year, funding for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration would be reduced by over 6 billion dollars, or almost 25 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The economy of Huntsville, home to the Marshall Space Flight Center as well as several federal contractors and research parks, depends heavily on government spending on space exploration and research.<\/p>\n<p>One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/alabama-nasa-msfc-fy21-eir-state-sheet.pdf\">recent report<\/a> by NASA based on the organization\u2019s budget for the 2021 fiscal year estimated they help create over 41,000 jobs in the state of Alabama, including 2,276 people employed directly by NASA.<\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/g-401510_economic_impact.pdf\">2019 analysis<\/a> of the Marshall Space Flight Center\u2019s economic impact found that the \u201c[Space Launch System] Program supports approximately 15,000 jobs across Alabama.\u201d If the budget request is approved as is, those 15,000 jobs would likely dry up.<\/p>\n<p>The budget request prepared for the 2025 fiscal year by the Biden administration called to spend over $2 billion a year on the SLS through at least 2029. The Trump administration\u2019s request though would ramp down funding to just $600 million by 2028 before ending the program entirely.<\/p>\n<p>According to the technical supplement for NASA\u2019s 2026 budget request, the SLS would still be used for 2026 and 2027 missions before \u201can orderly phase out of the NASA SLS after Artemis III.\u201d After the SLS is phased out, the supplement explains that \u201cNASA will initiate a new procurement to obtain commercial transportation services to conduct later Artemis missions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Major Trump backer and record breaking donor Elon Musk seems poised to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/02\/us\/politics\/elon-musk-spacex-trump-budget.html\">significantly benefit<\/a> from this transition, due to his plurality share in commercial aerospace company SpaceX. Musk and his associate Jared Isaacman, who was the nominee to be NASA administrator until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/05\/31\/2025\/white-house-expected-to-pull-nasa-nominee-isaacman\">this weekend<\/a>, both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/02\/19\/g-s1-49451\/artemis-moon-nasa-sls-rocket-doge-musk\">repeatedly criticized<\/a> the SLS program earlier this year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Republican politicians in Alabama were vocal critics of the Biden administration\u2019s choice to move the headquarters of U.S. Space Command to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alreporter.com\/2025\/05\/30\/report-huntsville-was-the-clear-choice-for-space-command-again-and-again\/\">Colorado Springs, Colorado<\/a>, rather than Huntsville, but have been relatively mum about the larger cuts proposed by the Trump White House.<\/p>\n<p>Congressman Dale Strong, who represents Huntsville, has not spoken out about the proposed cuts despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/huntsville\/2025\/05\/space-command-could-bring-4700-jobs-to-north-alabama-congressman-says.html\">telling constituents<\/a> he was \u201cbullish on the future of north Alabama\u201d in part because of the jobs U.S. Space Command would bring to the city. Strong also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketcitynow.com\/article\/news\/local\/congressman-dale-strong-says-federal-job-cuts-could-have-positive-benefits\/525-0910d023-e72e-471e-8bfc-e52290e1f5a9\">publicly supported<\/a> federal job cuts in February.<\/p>\n<p>While Alabama Senator Katie Britt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britt.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/u-s-senator-katie-britt-we-must-continue-to-invest-in-important-marshall-space-flight-center-programs\/\">vocally defended<\/a> NASA programs based out of Huntsville during Biden\u2019s presidency, including the Space Launch System, she has not publicly commented on the cuts proposed by President Trump. Neither has Alabama\u2019s senior senator, Tommy Tuberville, who is currently running for governor.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to <a href=\"https:\/\/aldailynews.com\/trumps-proposed-budget-phases-out-rocket-with-ties-to-huntsville\/\">Alabama Daily News<\/a> last month, Sen. Britt told the outlet that she supports the SLS and has \u201ctouted Alabama\u2019s second-to-none capabilities\u201d in meetings with executive branch staffers. Britt\u2019s office has not responded to APR\u2019s requests for comment yet.<\/p>\n<p>As the name suggests, presidents\u2019 budget proposals are just proposals.
