Right away, researchers were intrigued by the quartz-rich rock, which measures more than eight inches long and more than four inches wide.<\/p>\n<p>It has indentations that look like eyes and a mouth, as well as a ridge shaped like a nose. It did not look like a tool, and it was also larger than other stones found at the site. It had likely been transported to the cave from the Eresma River, located some three miles away.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image right\">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/VnRHLKw9juNfyBTWP6fZ9AAKDt4=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(749x1183:750x1184)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/80\/3a\/803a361f-7076-4a72-a198-e70c0c8a1c44\/12520_2025_2243_fig3_html.webp\" alt=\"Archaeological dig site\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      The rock was larger than others found in a cave in central Spain.<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">\u00c1lvarez-Alonso et al. \/ Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences, 2025<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cFrom the outset, we could tell it was peculiar,\u201d says lead author\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucm.es\/preharq-prehistoria\/david-alvarez-alonso\">David \u00c1lvarez-Alonso<\/a>, an archaeologist at Complutense University of Madrid, to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/spain\/touch-finger-neanderthal-may-made-art-rcna209143\">NBC News<\/a>\u2019 Peter Guo.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about the unusual rock, the researchers first confirmed that the red dot was ocher, a natural pigment made from clay. Then, they worked with Spanish forensic police to determine that the red dot was a fingerprint, possibly made by an adult male Neanderthal.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the placement of the red dot, they theorize that the Neanderthal thought the stone looked like a face and wanted to complete the resemblance. They suspect the individual was experiencing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/25448-pareidolia.html\">pareidolia<\/a>, a phenomenon in which the brain perceives patterns and images\u2014often faces\u2014in inanimate objects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt couldn\u2019t have been a coincidence that the dot is where it is\u2014and there are no markings to indicate any other use,\u201d \u00c1lvarez-Alonso tells the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2025\/may\/26\/like-a-face-discovery-reinforces-idea-neanderthals-created-art-say-experts\"><em>Guardian<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Sam Jones. \u201cSo why did they bring this pebble from the river to the inside of the cave? And, what\u2019s more, there\u2019s no ocher inside the cave or outside it. So they must have had to bring pigment from elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The artifact is also significant because it likely represents the most complete Neanderthal fingerprint discovered to date. Researchers have long debated whether modern humans were the first artists, or whether some earlier ancestors\u2014like Neanderthals\u2014were <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/2018\/02\/neanderthals-were-artists-and-thought-symbolically-new-studies-argue\/\">capable<\/a> of symbolic thought.<\/p>\n<p>Modern humans share a common ancestor with Neanderthals, which also walked upright and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/whats-the-difference-between-a-human-and-neanderthal-brain-180980736\/\">had large brains<\/a>. But Neanderthals mysteriously disappeared roughly 40,000 years ago, while <em>Homo sapiens<\/em> lived on. Today, some humans have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/neanderthal-dna-may-help-explain-why-some-people-are-early-risers-180983438\/\">traces of Neanderthal DNA<\/a> in their genomes because the two species\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/researchers-track-down-when-neanderthals-and-early-modern-humans-interbred-using-ancient-genomes-180985665\/?\">interbred<\/a> roughly 47,000 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>For years, the persistent narrative has been that Neanderthals were less sophisticated than <em>Homo sapiens<\/em>. But a growing body of research suggests the species was more intelligent than previously thought. Neanderthals made and used\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/nimble-minded-neanderthals-may-have-used-these-wooden-spears-to-hunt-200000-years-ago-180986620\/\">wooden spears<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/neanderthal-child-may-have-had-down-syndrome-fossil-suggests-180984619\/\">cared for<\/a> their fellow community members, made\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/a-65000-year-old-hearth-reveals-evidence-that-neanderthals-produced-tar-for-stone-tools-in-iberia-180985536\/\">sticky tar<\/a> and other\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/neanderthals-made-a-special-glue-to-engineer-grips-for-stone-tools-study-suggests-180983838\/\">adhesives<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/neanderthals-hunted-and-butchered-massive-elephants-125000-years-ago-180981578\/\">butchered massive elephants<\/a>, among other feats.<\/p>\n<p>Other known examples of possible Neanderthal art include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/oldest-known-neanderthal-engravings-discovered-in-french-cave-180982408\/\">engravings<\/a> made inside a cave at least 57,000 years ago and a carved, decorative\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/this-130000-year-old-decorative-bear-bone-may-be-the-oldest-known-neanderthal-art-180984380\/\">bear bone<\/a> that\u2019s between 115,000 and 130,000 years old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve set out our interpretation in the article, but the debate goes on,\u201d \u00c1lvarez-Alonso tells the <em>Guardian<\/em>. \u201cIf we had a pebble with a red dot on it that was done 5,000 years ago by <em>Homo sapiens<\/em>, no one would hesitate to call it portable art. \u2026 Why would a Neanderthal have seen it differently from the way we see it today?
