The nearby <b>Groombridge<br \/>\nPlace<\/b>, a moated manor house known for its formal gardens and vineyards, is<br \/>\nanother point of interest. This former tourist attraction is currently closed<br \/>\nand awaiting conversion into a boutique hotel and luxury spa. <\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEg1Cff-ytVwGnYaUu1Cx-VO_mklI815662U-Fw84gc6sOnjhTJ9HTL_FTFKwGd4M0LUOS9wvgLw6swZW_dzuLaNBP82h90gxgbA9Fbgb8kCmXhJQVW9w4Z7Sy94aAdJOeqUG_CLToX6RYxCHChetDdlsXUVXHYH1gswNNxd81ufDtO9lzHuMZMgf1I1QAA\/s3987\/Groombridge%20place.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1949\" data-original-width=\"3987\" height=\"195\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEg1Cff-ytVwGnYaUu1Cx-VO_mklI815662U-Fw84gc6sOnjhTJ9HTL_FTFKwGd4M0LUOS9wvgLw6swZW_dzuLaNBP82h90gxgbA9Fbgb8kCmXhJQVW9w4Z7Sy94aAdJOeqUG_CLToX6RYxCHChetDdlsXUVXHYH1gswNNxd81ufDtO9lzHuMZMgf1I1QAA\/w400-h195\/Groombridge%20place.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The <b>Sussex<\/b> part of <b>Groombridge<\/b> is a far more recent settlement.<br \/>\nThe growth of this area was likely due to the arrival of the railway in the<br \/>\nlate\u00a0<b>19<sup>th<\/sup>  century.<\/b> <b>Groombridge Junction<\/b> was an important part of the rail network in this part of the country but it gradually lost its significance not just because of the infamous <b>Beeching cuts<\/b>, but also due to a shameful lack of investment by the <b>Thatcher government<\/b>, some <b>20 years<\/b> later. The <b><i>&#8220;Iron Lady&#8221;<\/i><\/b>, of course, wasn&#8217;t a fan of the railways, and in <b>1985<\/b> encouraged a cash-strapped <b>British<br \/>\nRail<\/b> to close the<b> Eridge <\/b>line in order to save money. Although the savings were minimal,<br \/>\nthe sale of railway property, especially the\u00a0 impressive <b>Tunbridge Wells West<\/b> station, generated<br \/>\nsubstantial revenue for the government, but not for <b>British Rail. <\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhZkJGcW7E9YvzIKhBQUKfnLfNnZOzZSOe3z3YupjZbeN0co9i1aYKubhEvQ0NpZpbv9XIlg7i-o_I2dhFqkeMAvGKpFl0sffG32ftkNUODIExP_wl_EbecwOcfeQjZbowbRgL5Nun7hSJheQbnCXIHxVsAmE-q2ZWSc1uWnoxVSreKFCB4E4wQyp4BdrE\/s4080\/Crown%20Public%20bar.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2296\" data-original-width=\"4080\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhZkJGcW7E9YvzIKhBQUKfnLfNnZOzZSOe3z3YupjZbeN0co9i1aYKubhEvQ0NpZpbv9XIlg7i-o_I2dhFqkeMAvGKpFl0sffG32ftkNUODIExP_wl_EbecwOcfeQjZbowbRgL5Nun7hSJheQbnCXIHxVsAmE-q2ZWSc1uWnoxVSreKFCB4E4wQyp4BdrE\/w400-h225\/Crown%20Public%20bar.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I digress, and the <b>Crown Inn<\/b> is a pub I became acquainted<br \/>\nwith right from the start of my time working in <b>Tonbridge<\/b>, and several years before<br \/>\nI actually moved to the town. This was because the company I worked for, operated<br \/>\nin the field of water treatment. We had a new piece of kit that the local water<br \/>\ncompany allowed us to have on test, at their <b>Groombridge pumping station<\/b>. <b><i>\u201cJust<br \/>\ndriving over to <a name=\"_Hlk197859007\">Groombridge<\/a> to check on the chart-recorder,\u201d <\/i><\/b>was code for disappearing, during work time, to carry out a quick<br \/>\ncheck of the equipment, a task that was then followed by a pint or two at the <b>Crown Inn.<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEgZpdZokyuREY9Xy7IhfFSpyTIhwIWQYwEMVHUrK9u5HaOc1C9vd_hMuQfYH32Nxxx9CxAL8UONj5Dybn96IG4WguIZE-r5Ua8UlOCkhqBvf6I99-ik5vFG8lJ1vN5lLy3ijkr8i8aT9h1ZQn6sg0Q26tFpPjTCLbNSEE2qti_282TUabdF3wstlZvDxig\/s4000\/Groombridge%20bar.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2250\" data-original-width=\"4000\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEgZpdZokyuREY9Xy7IhfFSpyTIhwIWQYwEMVHUrK9u5HaOc1C9vd_hMuQfYH32Nxxx9CxAL8UONj5Dybn96IG4WguIZE-r5Ua8UlOCkhqBvf6I99-ik5vFG8lJ1vN5lLy3ijkr8i8aT9h1ZQn6sg0Q26tFpPjTCLbNSEE2qti_282TUabdF3wstlZvDxig\/w400-h225\/Groombridge%20bar.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>And why not? <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>for this<br \/>\nsplendid old inn has a timeless atmosphere that seems to have changed very<br \/>\nlittle over the years. It reminds me of what pubs were like when I first<br \/>\nstarted drinking back in the early <b>70\u2019s. <\/b>Stepping inside, one is greeted by a<br \/>\nheavily beamed public room, overseen by a bar counter. A couple of open<br \/>\nfireplaces provide welcome warmth during winter, whilst a separate restaurant-cum-dining<br \/>\nroom leads off to the right and the rear. To the left of the bar, and the fireplace,<br \/>\nis what is almost a private or snug bar, adorned with some wonderful old<br \/>\nadvertising posters. I\u2019m not sure whether they genuine or repro, but they<br \/>\ncertainly add to the feel of this part of the pub.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjwAegHsoyCrKBISfVXa6NKpalss3zO4NgOQ1qb6kkcTRsgkhGuKxBIzBGP8kdvPNFmNks74Cu-cVqaS24NX8SNJVfYNrxbFxF6I6sJnqihM1XrhxvS8-v6NJz-6V7LDGk2alXadNCbCa2ZTPusKPas9JkVuQLZvkb5d7bI7qrwIFcjx4CAYux8Yet2OkU\/s3900\/Crown%20toilets.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2194\" data-original-width=\"3900\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjwAegHsoyCrKBISfVXa6NKpalss3zO4NgOQ1qb6kkcTRsgkhGuKxBIzBGP8kdvPNFmNks74Cu-cVqaS24NX8SNJVfYNrxbFxF6I6sJnqihM1XrhxvS8-v6NJz-6V7LDGk2alXadNCbCa2ZTPusKPas9JkVuQLZvkb5d7bI7qrwIFcjx4CAYux8Yet2OkU\/w400-h225\/Crown%20toilets.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>As well as a restaurant the <b>Crown <\/b>offers accommodation, in<br \/>\nfour comfortable period rooms. Given the age of the building, I would imagine<br \/>\nthat the stairs up to the rooms must be both steep and narrow. I was a bit wary<br \/>\nmyself, when returning from the <b>Gents,<\/b> as there are some quite steep steps down<br \/>\ninto the snug. (The same obviously applies to the <b>Ladies<\/b> as well). Thirst things first, and I popped inside, and<br \/>\nordered a pint of <b>Sussex Best<\/b>. The other choice was <b>Larkin\u2019s Traditional,<\/b> a beer<br \/>\nthat is not there amongst my favourites, as I would much rather see the brewery\u2019s <b>Best<br \/>\nBitter<\/b> adorning the bar. That\u2019s just me, as the <b>3.4% Trad<\/b> is the best-selling<br \/>\nbeer by far, in the <b>Larkin\u2019s cannon.<\/b> (Something about it being a low-strength<br \/>\nsession beer, that you can have a couple of without risking your licence.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjJEPp2NIFbq8h77kwdpDtOcgkJWDNoOH8BjbpvSvWi7wfxMECySJJMzTNi7e5Vwz8xDf4HA3_bc42QOn2Q6a-Y7uknknpzZiqbkVtJaGa-8TofIratrUH5CYX-wB88dykioocuO2yQdru2srmrTmiwn-lfVGXDuG5WzFkVWsqE5M6uZm9s5GfwEloAtEY\/s2833\/Groombridge%20cottages.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1957\" data-original-width=\"2833\" height=\"276\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjJEPp2NIFbq8h77kwdpDtOcgkJWDNoOH8BjbpvSvWi7wfxMECySJJMzTNi7e5Vwz8xDf4HA3_bc42QOn2Q6a-Y7uknknpzZiqbkVtJaGa-8TofIratrUH5CYX-wB88dykioocuO2yQdru2srmrTmiwn-lfVGXDuG5WzFkVWsqE5M6uZm9s5GfwEloAtEY\/w400-h276\/Groombridge%20cottages.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>It was very pleasant sitting outside, sunning myself, although<br \/>\nsoon afterwards, a very thirsty looking rambler appeared, climbing up the hill,<br \/>\nwith a huge rucksack on his back, complete with a bedding roll and sleeping bag<br \/>\nslung underneath. It turned out he was following a route<br \/>\nof his own choosing, that didn\u2019t take in any of the better-known footpaths, but<br \/>\nhis route was taking him deeper into <b>Sussex<\/b> for an overnight stop. I didn\u2019t<br \/>\nhave long to wait until the next <b>291 bus<\/b> heading towards <b>East Grinstead,<\/b> came<br \/>\nalong. Milne,<\/b> and <b>Rolling Stones\u2019 <\/b>guitarist and founder member,<br \/>\n<b>Brian Jones<\/b>, both of whom lived at <b>Cotchford Farm,<\/b> to the southwest of<br \/>\n<b>Hartfield,<\/b> to overshadow this piece, so I shall leave you to do your own research<br \/>\nhere. What I will say is that the village pub, formerly known as the <b>Anchor,<\/b><br \/>\nhas recently been transposed into the <b>Bear,<\/b> picking up on the <b>Winnie the Pooh<\/b><br \/>\nstories, written by <b>Alan Alexander Milne,<\/b> during the <b>1920\u2019s. <\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjuc84Yc1Ksyn8gCnJ7VCUX0vwAozhsuxlGJzHth0i7unnrMsrK6Cjagf3JXNDxmcTqlgi7y1VVHwCt25NP8s5P23o6aDWhuCfIyt-OwPgzW8c76gYxOB7oAt4ZZ9RJPEKQD2BH2XhAhInZ6MZQ0KDkaRRhMaD9QY_Ytdcsfj9I7E6uj6dPcaXQbzvj9RQ\/s3911\/Bear%20bar%20counter.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2201\" data-original-width=\"3911\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjuc84Yc1Ksyn8gCnJ7VCUX0vwAozhsuxlGJzHth0i7unnrMsrK6Cjagf3JXNDxmcTqlgi7y1VVHwCt25NP8s5P23o6aDWhuCfIyt-OwPgzW8c76gYxOB7oAt4ZZ9RJPEKQD2BH2XhAhInZ6MZQ0KDkaRRhMaD9QY_Ytdcsfj9I7E6uj6dPcaXQbzvj9RQ\/w400-h225\/Bear%20bar%20counter.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I suppose one can\u2019t blame the pub\u2019s owners for cashing in on<br \/>\nthe <b>Christopher Robin<\/b> stories, but the Bear seems a strange name for a pub because<br \/>\nthere aren\u2019t any bears in this part of the world. Come to think of it, the<br \/>\n<b>Anchor<\/b> is also an unusual pub name in an area where there aren\u2019t any ships! That<br \/>\nsaid, apart from the new name, little seems to have changed at this substantial<br \/>\ntwo bar pub, parts of which date from the <b>14<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/b> According to<br \/>\n<b>Google<\/b>, I last visited the<b> Anchor\/Bear<\/b> <b>10 years<\/b> ago, although I thought I\u2019d<br \/>\nbeen to the pub since then. As <b>Google<\/b> doesn&#8217;t lie, that <b>2016<\/b> visit would have been on <u><b><a href=\"https:\/\/baileysbeerblog.blogspot.com\/2015\/10\/ashdown-forest-by-vintage-bus.html\">an outing by vintage bus<\/a><\/b><\/u>, that I undertook, with friends from<b> Maidstone CAMRA<\/b><br \/>\nbranch. This feature is repeated in the building<br \/>\nnext door which, if you look closely, is a former pub. The <b><u><a href=\"https:\/\/baileysbeerblog.blogspot.com\/2015\/10\/ashdown-forest-by-vintage-bus.html\">article I wrote<\/a><\/u><\/b> at the time, records that many<br \/>\nyears ago I called in for a drink at the <b>Hay Waggon<\/b> whilst on a cycle<br \/>\nride through the area. The beer range was divided between <b>Harvey\u2019s<\/b> and <b>Long Man Brewery,<\/b><br \/>\nwith <b>Best Bitter<\/b> plus <b>Sisters\u2019 Table Beer<\/b> from the former, plus <b>Long Blonde,\u00a0<br \/>\nCopper Hop<\/b> from the latter. I opted for a pint of <b>Copper Hop<\/b> which, as it says<br \/>\non the pump-clip, is a hoppy, amber ale. The most popular beer though, seemed<br \/>\nto be <i><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"><b>Cruzcampo<\/b>, the <b>4.4% abv<\/b><br \/>\nSpanish lager which for the young and trendy, aka <b><i>\u201cfickle\u201d<\/i><\/b>, appears to be the<br \/>\nnew <b>Madri. <\/b>Brewed in <b>Seville<\/b>, a city that I would like to visit on my next trip<br \/>\nto <b>Spain<\/b>, and a place where I\u2019m sure the <b>Cruzcampo<\/b> would taste much better, than<br \/>\nin an English village.
