Named in homage to the Studio Ghibli film, this riff from Frankies in Nashville is an equally artistic take on the Paper Plane recipe. \u201cWe went with rye instead of bourbon because the spice brings out the herbaceousness\u00a0of the Amaro CioCiaro we use,\u201d explains beverage manager James Russell, who created the recipe with bartender Ash Pokojski. \u201cWe picked Salers as our bitter element because it has a more gentle, floral bitterness than the pithy bitterness of Campari or Aperol. Then we added Italicus mostly for sweetness, but also because it has a lovely mouthfeel.\u201d

3\/4 oz. rye whiskey
3\/4 oz. Salers
3\/4 oz. fresh lemon juice
1\/2 oz. of Amaro CioCiaro
1\/2 oz. Italicus
2 dashes Peychaud\u2019s bitters
3-4 dashes saline solution or a small pinch of sea salt <\/p>\nTools: shaker, strainer, fine strainer
Glass: coupe
Garnish: lemon twist (cut into the shape of a bird, if you\u2019re feeling ambitious)<\/p>\n
Combine all of the ingredients in an ice-filled shaker. Shake well and double strain into a chilled coupe, and garnish.<\/p>\n
