Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Karol Nawrocki, a historian standing for the nationalist opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, has won Poland\u2019s presidential run-off vote in a heavy blow for Prime Minister Donald Tusk\u2019s government.<\/p>\n<p>Nawrocki won 50.9 per cent of votes against 49.1 per cent for pro-EU candidate Rafa\u0142 Trzaskowski, the Warsaw mayor representing Tusk\u2019s Civic Platform party, the National Electoral Commission said on Monday. <\/p>\n<p>Trzaskowski conceded defeat and congratulated Nawrocki. \u201cI\u2019m sorry that I didn\u2019t manage to convince the\u00a0majority of citizens of my vision of Poland,\u201d he said on X in the late morning.<\/p>\n<p>Nawrocki\u2019s win could scupper Tusk\u2019s reform agenda and weaken Poland\u2019s role within the EU, as well as its staunch backing of Ukraine in the war against Russia.<\/p>\n<p>The outcome is a rare win for Donald Trump\u2019s Maga movement abroad, following election defeats for rightwing politicians aligned with the US president in Canada, Australia and Romania. <\/p>\n<p>On a visit to Poland last Tuesday, US homeland security secretary Kristi Noem urged voters to \u201celect the right leader\u201d, describing Trzaskowski as \u201can absolute train wreck\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The victory marked a sharp turnaround for Nawrocki, who had consistently trailed Trzaskowski in opinion polls and narrowly lost the first round to his rival.<\/p>\n<p>His win could be \u201ca harbinger of Poland\u2019s backsliding into domestic political turmoil\u201d, said Piotr Buras, head of the Warsaw office of the European Council on Foreign Relations. <\/p>\n<p>Buras added that Tusk would now have to work with a president whose main mission will be \u201cto pave the way for PiS\u2019s return to power\u201d and undermine his government. <\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s result will \u201cin effect significantly weaken the Polish prime minister\u2019s international standing\u201d, he said. <\/p>\n<p>The Polish system gives the president relatively limited powers, but those include the right to veto legislation or refer bills to a constitutional court that is still packed with PiS-appointed judges.<\/p>\n<p>Outgoing President Andrzej Duda, another PiS nominee, has wielded his veto powers to block Tusk\u2019s planned judicial overhaul and other reforms since the prime minister\u2019s coalition ousted PiS from office in 2023. Duda congratulated Nawrocki early on Monday on X. <\/p>\n<p>Hungary, whose Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n is seeking re-election next year and has been Maga\u2019s main European cheerleader, was the first country to congratulate Nawrocki. <\/p>\n<p>The Polish vote was a \u201cfresh victory for (European) patriots\u201d, Hungarian foreign minister P\u00e9ter Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3 said on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>The outcome was a late dramatic reversal of fortunes for the two candidates. A first exit poll had showed Trzaskowski with a wafer-thin lead, prompting Tusk\u2019s candidate to declare early victory late on Sunday. <\/p>\n<p>But Nawrocki refused to concede defeat and a later exit poll showed him instead in the lead.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/685608a1-7503-48c2-88b7-ddbadc5bea25\" data-trackable=\"link\">Jaros\u0142aw Kaczy\u0144ski<\/a>, the PiS founder and long-standing Tusk nemesis who handpicked Nawrocki as a little-known outsider, told supporters late on Sunday that the political newcomer had survived a \u201cNiagara of lies\u201d during the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Nawrocki denied all accusations against him, which related to personal scandals including alleged ties to criminals, calling them politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>The electoral commission said turnout in the second round was 71.6 per cent, almost 3 percentage points short of the record participation in the 2023 parliamentary elections that brought Tusk back to power and ended eight years of PiS rule.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of Sunday\u2019s vote, Tusk had warned voters that Nawrocki could not only block reforms but also undermine Poland\u2019s role in the EU amid Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of neighbouring Ukraine. <\/p>\n<p>Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said she was \u201cconfident that the EU will continue its very good co-operation with Poland\u201d following Nawrocki\u2019s victory.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulating him on his win, von der Leyen said: \u201cWe are all stronger together in our community of peace, democracy and values. <\/iframe><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Karol Nawrocki, a historian standing for the nationalist opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, has won Poland\u2019s presidential run-off vote in a heavy blow for Prime Minister Donald Tusk\u2019s government.<\/p>\n<p>Nawrocki won 50.9 per cent of votes against 49.1 per cent for pro-EU candidate Rafa\u0142 Trzaskowski, the Warsaw mayor representing Tusk\u2019s Civic Platform party, the National Electoral Commission said on Monday. <\/p>\n<p>Trzaskowski conceded defeat and congratulated Nawrocki. \u201cI\u2019m sorry that I didn\u2019t manage to convince the\u00a0majority of citizens of my vision of Poland,\u201d he said on X in the late morning.<\/p>\n<p>Nawrocki\u2019s win could scupper Tusk\u2019s reform agenda and weaken Poland\u2019s role within the EU, as well as its staunch backing of Ukraine in the war against Russia.<\/p>\n<p>The outcome is a rare win for Donald Trump\u2019s Maga movement abroad, following election defeats for rightwing politicians aligned with the US president in Canada, Australia and Romania. <\/p>\n<p>On a visit to Poland last Tuesday, US homeland security secretary Kristi Noem urged voters to \u201celect the right leader\u201d, describing Trzaskowski as \u201can absolute train wreck\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The victory marked a sharp turnaround for Nawrocki, who had consistently trailed Trzaskowski in opinion polls and narrowly lost the first round to his rival.<\/p>\n<p>His win could be \u201ca harbinger of Poland\u2019s backsliding into domestic political turmoil\u201d, said Piotr Buras, head of the Warsaw office of the European Council on Foreign Relations. <\/p>\n<p>Buras added that Tusk would now have to work with a president whose main mission will be \u201cto pave the way for PiS\u2019s return to power\u201d and undermine his government. <\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s result will \u201cin effect significantly weaken the Polish prime minister\u2019s international standing\u201d, he said. <\/p>\n<p>The Polish system gives the president relatively limited powers, but those include the right to veto legislation or refer bills to a constitutional court that is still packed with PiS-appointed judges.<\/p>\n<p>Outgoing President Andrzej Duda, another PiS nominee, has wielded his veto powers to block Tusk\u2019s planned judicial overhaul and other reforms since the prime minister\u2019s coalition ousted PiS from office in 2023. Duda congratulated Nawrocki early on Monday on X. <\/p>\n<p>Hungary, whose Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n is seeking re-election next year and has been Maga\u2019s main European cheerleader, was the first country to congratulate Nawrocki. <\/p>\n<p>The Polish vote was a \u201cfresh victory for (European) patriots\u201d, Hungarian foreign minister P\u00e9ter Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3 said on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>The outcome was a late dramatic reversal of fortunes for the two candidates. A first exit poll had showed Trzaskowski with a wafer-thin lead, prompting Tusk\u2019s candidate to declare early victory late on Sunday. <\/p>\n<p>But Nawrocki refused to concede defeat and a later exit poll showed him instead in the lead.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/685608a1-7503-48c2-88b7-ddbadc5bea25\" data-trackable=\"link\">Jaros\u0142aw Kaczy\u0144ski<\/a>, the PiS founder and long-standing Tusk nemesis who handpicked Nawrocki as a little-known outsider, told supporters late on Sunday that the political newcomer had survived a \u201cNiagara of lies\u201d during the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Nawrocki denied all accusations against him, which related to personal scandals including alleged ties to criminals, calling them politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>The electoral commission said turnout in the second round was 71.6 per cent, almost 3 percentage points short of the record participation in the 2023 parliamentary elections that brought Tusk back to power and ended eight years of PiS rule.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of Sunday\u2019s vote, Tusk had warned voters that Nawrocki could not only block reforms but also undermine Poland\u2019s role in the EU amid Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of neighbouring Ukraine. <\/p>\n<p>Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said she was \u201cconfident that the EU will continue its very good co-operation with Poland\u201d following Nawrocki\u2019s victory.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulating him on his win, von der Leyen said: \u201cWe are all stronger together in our community of peace, democracy and values.
