(Beth Clifton collage)\" width=\"352\" height=\"331\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a> <em><strong>Tule elk at Point Reyes National Seashore.<\/strong><\/em><br \/><em><strong>(Beth Clifton collage)<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Cattle were supposed to be gone by 1987<\/h2>\n<p>But it is the presence of the cattle doing most harm to the health of the resident herd of about 400 rare tule elk,\u00a0 federally listed as a \u201cspecies of concern,\u201d\u00a0 though not officially considered \u201cthreatened\u201d or \u201cendangered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The presence of the cattle has also long frustrated environmentalists concerned about the impact of cattle grazing on the nominally protected habitat.<\/p>\n<p>The ranches and the estimated 500 to 600 cattle then grazing the land that the U.S. Congress in 1962 set aside as the Point Reyes National Seashore were supposed to be gone by 1987,\u00a0 when the ranching families\u2019 original leases expired.<\/p>\n<p>Instead,\u00a0 the beef ranchers and dairy farmers expanded their herds tenfold and lobbied successfully to have their leases extended time and again,\u00a0 including as recently as 2029.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_59889\" style=\"width: 356px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.animals24-7.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picsart_23-09-30_15-17-29-559-e1696112326638.jpg?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59889\" class=\" wp-image-59889 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animals24-7.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picsart_23-09-30_15-17-29-559-e1696112326638.jpg\" alt=\"Dianne Feinstein obituary.\" width=\"346\" height=\"378\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-59889\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-59889 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.animals24-7.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picsart_23-09-30_15-17-29-559-e1696112326638.jpg?resize=346%2C378&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Dianne Feinstein obituary.\" width=\"346\" height=\"378\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a> <em><strong>(Beth Clifton collage)<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Death of Diane Feinstein changed the dynamic<\/h2>\n<p>Their major political ally,\u00a0 however,\u00a0 former U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein,\u00a0 died on September 29,\u00a0 2023.<\/p>\n<p>On January 8,\u00a0 2025,\u00a0 with the National Park Service facing multiple lawsuits brought by the Resource Renewal Institute, \u00a0the Center for Biological Diversity, \u00a0and the Western Watersheds Project,\u00a0 12 of the Point Reyes beef ranchers and dairy farmers agreed to a reported $30 million buyout brokered by the Nature Conservancy,\u00a0 requiring them to retire their leases and vacate the Point Reyes National Seashore within 15 months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe deal to wind down ranching, \u00a0which formally puts an end to the litigation, \u00a0is the product of two years of closed-door mediation between the National Park Service, \u00a0ranchers, \u00a0and the three environmental groups,\u201d\u00a0 wrote Kurtis Alexander for the <em>San Francisco Chronicle<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Nature Conservancy was invited to join the discussions to help resolve the conflict,\u201d\u00a0 Alexander said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70685\" style=\"width: 383px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.animals24-7.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picsart_25-01-13_21-08-45-586-e1736831920724.jpg?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70685\" class=\" wp-image-70685 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animals24-7.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picsart_25-01-13_21-08-45-586-e1736831920724.jpg\" alt=\"Tule elk at Point Reyes National Seashore. (Beth Clifton collage)\" width=\"387\" height=\"331\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a> <em><strong>Tule elk at Point Reyes National Seashore.<\/strong><\/em><br \/><em><strong>(Beth Clifton collage)<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Two holdouts<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cTwo beef operations that didn\u2019t sign on to the deal will continue to operate, though the terms of their future remain unsettled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the adjacent Golden Gate National Recreation Area, \u00a0which also is operated by the National Park Service, \u00a0seven beef ranches will continue to operate, \u00a0each with new 20-year leases. (Beth Clifton collage)\" width=\"337\" height=\"420\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a> <em><strong>Tule elk at Point Reyes National Seashore.<\/strong><\/em><br \/><em><strong>(Beth Clifton collage)<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">850 feet of fence down before ranchers sued<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe park said droughts and climate change accelerated the need to remove the fence,\u201d\u00a0 Duggan explained, \u00a0\u201cand that it collaborated with Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, \u00a0which has ancestral ties to the area and partners with the National Park Service to manage the park, \u00a0during the planning process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About 850 feet of the fence was removed before the\u00a0California Cattlemen\u2019s Association on December 6,\u00a0 2024 sought a temporary restraining order that delayed the rest of the removal at least until a February 2025 hearing.\u00a0 The ranchers\u2019 agreement to vacate Point Reyes,\u00a0 however,\u00a0 would appear to make the fence removal issue moot.<\/p>\n<p>Presiding over the transition of Point Reyes National Seashore back to wildlife habitat will be 23-year National Park Service employee Anne Dubinsky Altman,\u00a0 named the new permanent superintendent of the park on September 22, 2024,\u00a0 after three months as interim superintendent.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70691\" style=\"width: 403px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.animals24-7.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picsart_25-01-13_21-25-56-627-scaled-e1736832389748.jpg?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70691\" class=\" wp-image-70691 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.animals24-7.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picsart_25-01-13_21-25-56-627-scaled-e1736832389748.jpg\" alt=\"Tule elk at Point Reyes National Seashore.
