{"id":266045,"date":"2025-05-31T22:23:15","date_gmt":"2025-05-31T22:23:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/activist\/japan-rides-the-censorship-bandwagon\/"},"modified":"2025-05-31T22:23:15","modified_gmt":"2025-05-31T22:23:15","slug":"japan-rides-the-censorship-bandwagon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=266045","title":{"rendered":"Japan Rides the Censorship Bandwagon"},"content":{"rendered":" \r\n<br><div>\n\n                                        \n\n\n<p>The manufacturer of the replicon mRNA Covid \u201cvaccine\u201d in Japan, Meiji Seika Pharma, has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2024\/12\/29\/japan\/science-health\/covid-vaccine-defamation-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brought a lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0against a member of the Japanese parliament, Kazuhiro Haraguchi. Haraguchi had commented that the Covid injections are \u201cakin to a biological weapon,\u201d a statement which the Meiji Pharma president claimed was beyond the bounds of acceptable expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, statements like Haraguchi\u2019s about the dangers of the Covid mRNA injections are now commonplace in many nations, and drug companies do not seem to be suing people for making them, at least in the US. Instead, state attorneys general in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.contagionlive.com\/view\/state-of-kansas-files-a-lawsuit-against-covid-19-vaccine-manufacturer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kansas<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasattorneygeneral.gov\/news\/releases\/attorney-general-ken-paxton-continues-lawsuit-against-pfizer-knowingly-misrepresenting-efficacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Texas<\/a>\u00a0have been suing Pfizer for misrepresenting its Covid injections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, Japan has been gradually evolving into a place where it is difficult to publicly express ideas unapproved by powerful business interests and officialdom. In addition to government and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brownstone.org\/articles\/japans-never-ending-germophobia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mainstream news media collusion<\/a>\u00a0to keep Covid medical realities from the Japanese public, the government passed a law to squelch nonconforming messaging online.<\/p><div class=\"g g-1\"><div class=\"g-single a-8\"><a class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"OCwxLDEsNjA=\" href=\"https:\/\/www.empshield.com\/?coupon=macro\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.activistpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/EMP-SHIELD-BANNER-400x400-1.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The intentions behind this measure are clear: Prominent government figures have openly declared their conviction that \u201cmisinformation\u201d is a major problem in Japan. In December 2024, Prime\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.jp\/en\/japan\/article_136024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Minister Ishiba stated<\/a>\u00a0that he was considering more regulations concerning Internet discourse that he considers problematic, and a prominent LDP (Liberal Democratic Party) politician named Noda commented recently that Japan was being influenced more and more by \u201cfake\u201d information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In May 2024, Japan\u2019s parliament\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/monitor.civicus.org\/explore\/japan-press-freedom-ranking-drops-while-new-law-passed-to-remove-defamatory-online-posts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passed a law<\/a>\u00a0to enable the quick elimination of defamatory posts from social media platforms like Facebook and X. By this law, such platforms would have to make explicit sites for taking requests to delete posts and also make clear their criteria for taking down posts. The new law went into effect on April 1, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unsurprisingly, some Japanese\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Qjow4RhFsIw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube vloggers<\/a>\u00a0are expressing concerns that, under the new set of regulations, their vlogs may soon be targeted as purveyors of \u201cmisinformation,\u201d especially when they criticize government policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only online media platforms are targeted in this development, even though Japanese print communications and TV programs have also often been guilty of spreading\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/publicbetrayedin00gamb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">harmful disinformation<\/a>. Ironically, in many instances, this is not because they are unregulated but precisely because they are under the thumb of government agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the Japanese National Police Agency has deliberately leaked information about people under investigation in order to pressure them into confessing to crimes. Since the Japanese public often naively believes that suspicion equals guilt, this tactic results in terrible consequences for the unjustly accused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1996, after an unsuccessful attempt by the Aum Shinrikyo cult to assassinate three Japanese judges, police leaked to news media outlets some details of their investigation of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wwrn.org\/articles\/1032\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yoshiyuki Kono<\/a>, an innocent man whose family was also severely injured in the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kono\u2019s experience of being hounded by both the authorities and the mainstream news media mirrors that of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/magazine.northwestern.edu\/exclusives\/from-hero-to-suspect-the-true-story-of-richard-jewell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Richard Jewell<\/a>, the heroic security guard who became a suspect after the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bombing. The FBI deliberately leaked details of their investigation to American mainstream news outlets, which proceeded to harass and condemn Jewell along with the investigating FBI agents, though the case eventually unraveled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even before the social media platform law, Japanese news media outlets were effectively controlled by the government. As a result, Japan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/why-japan-ranks-poorly-in-press-freedom\/a-65549778\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was ranked lowest<\/a>\u00a0among all Group of Seven nations for freedom of the press in the World Press Freedom Index. Japan\u2019s overall ranking dropped from 68<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0to 70<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0after the 2024 social media law was passed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reasons for this are the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1468-5876.2011.00538.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press club system<\/a>\u00a0and the self-censorship of most Japanese reporters. Each government ministry has a press club consisting of representatives from prominent news media outlets, and they receive official briefings from government officials. However, these members of the press can be banned from these briefings if they do anything that reflects badly on the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, at such meetings, there is \u201cno atmosphere that encourages deliberation of important issues because reporters know that if they ask difficult questions they can be punished,\u201d in one Japanese reporter\u2019s words. For instance, reporters at press briefings were afraid to ask questions about unclear statements to Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga, who sometimes harshly responded, \u201cThat question is beside the point!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These developments are especially ominous in light of the fact that Japan already has a tainted history in regard to suppressing freedom of information and expression. In 1925, the Japanese government passed the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aboutjapan.japansociety.org\/content.cfm\/peace_preservation_law_of_1925\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peace Preservation Law<\/a>, which criminalized the expression of unapproved ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the years that followed, totalitarian control rapidly replaced democratic government and unrestricted public debate. This culminated in a war that brought great horrors to Japan and other nations.
